The best magic items for a D&D 5e rogue improve a job the character already needs to do: stay hidden, reach a strong position, land a Sneak Attack, survive a counterattack, or solve a problem without a fight. This ranking uses the 2014 rules as its baseline, weighs broad usefulness against rarity, attunement, and equipment-slot competition, and is an editorial selection—not an official or mathematically objective ranking. The right pick depends on the campaign, build, available loot, and Dungeon Master approval.

How this ranking works

Items rank higher when they help with a rogue’s recurring strengths and remain useful across different situations. A potent but narrow item can still be the right choice for a particular build; it simply ranks below a similarly useful item with fewer restrictions. Rarity is a guide to scarcity, not a guarantee that an item will appear in a campaign. The D&D Beyond rogue guide offers a useful set of recommendations, but it does not establish a definitive list of 25 or an objective order. Its advice also notes that a DM may limit access to magic items: D&D Beyond’s Rogue 201.

The descriptions below use 2014-era 5e item rules unless stated otherwise. Check the rules edition your table uses: the revised SRD 5.2 changes some class features. Item wording, rarity, and availability can also depend on the sourcebook and the DM.

The 25 best magic items for rogues

1. Cloak of Arachnida

A high-impact cloak for a rogue who wants to move across walls and ceilings, resist poison, and create webbing to hinder foes. Its mobility can open attack angles or escape routes that ordinary movement cannot. It is very rare and requires attunement, so it is a major reward rather than an early build assumption. It also competes for the cloak slot.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Cloak of Elvenkind

A reliable stealth choice when hiding from sight matters. This uncommon, attunement-required cloak gives advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide while its hood is up, and imposes disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks made to see the wearer. Raising or lowering the hood takes an action. It does not silence footsteps or defeat smell, blindsight, or other nonvisual ways of detecting someone. Rules: Cloak of Elvenkind.

3. Bracer of Flying Daggers

A strong fit for a rogue built around thrown daggers. The bracer supplies magical daggers, making it easier to keep attacking at range without managing a conventional supply of weapons. Its appeal is build-dependent: it is less compelling if the character relies on a bow, crossbow, or melee weapon. Check its specific item text and rarity in the sourcebook used by your table.

4. Boots of Speed

Excellent for repositioning, escaping a dangerous melee, or closing distance when the battlefield changes quickly. Their strongest benefit is mobility, not a permanent boost to damage. The boots require attunement and use the boot slot; remember that a paired item’s benefit requires both pieces to be worn.

5. Gloves of Thievery

A practical choice for a rogue whose campaign features locks and traps. These gloves improve the wearer’s Dexterity checks made to pick locks and disarm traps, supporting a familiar exploration role without relying on a spell. They are uncommon and do not require attunement, making them comparatively easy to fit into a growing collection.

6. Nine Lives Stealer

A powerful weapon for a melee rogue, with a chance to deliver a devastating effect against a target that has fewer than 100 hit points. It is very rare and requires attunement. The weapon is a poor fit if the rogue’s usual plan is ranged combat, and its effect is not a reliable substitute for ordinary attack damage.

  • 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
  • 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)

  • 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

7. Stone of Good Luck (Luckstone)

A broadly useful option that improves ability checks and saving throws. That makes it relevant to stealth, initiative-adjacent problem solving, and the defensive rolls that can determine whether a rogue stays in the fight. It is uncommon and requires attunement. Its value is consistent rather than flashy.

8. Ring of Evasion

A defensive item for surviving area effects. When a Dexterity saving throw would normally deal half damage on a success, the ring can help turn a failed save into a success, but it has limited charges. It is especially attractive to a rogue who is often exposed to blasts or traps, though it costs an attunement slot.

9. Spies’ Murmur

A utility-focused choice for campaigns with surveillance, infiltration, and information gathering. Its functions can help a rogue operate as part of a team rather than merely improve personal combat. Because the item’s exact features and availability depend on the sourcebook, confirm its rules text and rarity before choosing it.

10. +1 weapon suited to the rogue

A +1 rapier, shortsword, dagger, shortbow, or other proficient weapon improves attack and damage rolls with that weapon. For a rogue, improving the chance to hit can also make it more likely that the turn’s Sneak Attack lands. Choose the weapon that matches the build rather than assuming every rogue wants a rapier. This is a straightforward reward with little tactical overhead.

11. Cloak of Protection

This uncommon, attunement-required cloak improves Armor Class and saving throws, helping a rogue avoid hits and resist effects. Its broad defense is useful in nearly any campaign, but it occupies the same cloak slot as the Cloak of Elvenkind or Cloak of Arachnida. A character normally cannot wear more than one cloak at once.

Anker USB C Hub, 7in1 Multi-Port USB Adapter, 4K@60Hz USBC to HDMI Splitter
  • Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

12. Boots of Elvenkind

These boots help with quiet movement, making them a good complement to a stealth plan that the Cloak of Elvenkind alone cannot complete. They are especially useful when noise, rather than sight, threatens an infiltration. Their value depends on how often the DM calls for sound-based detection, and they compete with other boots.

13. Potion of Invisibility

A useful one-use answer to a dangerous infiltration, escape, or approach. A potion avoids an attunement cost and can be handed to another character, but it is consumed when used. Invisibility does not make the drinker inaudible or erase other signs of their presence.

14. Bag of Holding

A versatile party utility item for carrying equipment, loot, disguises, or tools without burdening the rogue with visible bags. It does not directly improve a check or attack, but can make travel and preparation more manageable. It is most valuable when the campaign involves frequent exploration and the group has a plan for keeping it secure.

15. Gloves of Swimming and Climbing

A useful exploration item when vertical routes, water crossings, or difficult terrain appear regularly. It helps a rogue take routes that may bypass guards or hazards. It is less valuable in campaigns where those environments rarely matter, and it uses the gloves slot.

16. Boots of Striding and Springing

These boots improve movement flexibility, particularly for a rogue who needs to cover ground or make leaps during an escape or pursuit. They are less universally useful than Boots of Speed, but can suit a mobility-focused character at a lower level of scarcity. They still compete for the boot slot.

17. Poison

In campaigns that allow the relevant poison and provide opportunities to apply it, poison can add pressure to a weapon attack. It is a consumable rather than a permanent upgrade, and poison resistance or immunity can sharply reduce its usefulness. The D&D Beyond rogue guide includes poison among its suggested options, but the DM controls what is available and how it enters the campaign.

18. Weapon of Warning

A useful defensive weapon for a rogue who wants help avoiding surprise. Its warning function can benefit nearby companions as well, making it more than a personal combat upgrade. It does not improve stealth or guarantee that the party will spot every threat.

19. Dust of Disappearance

A consumable that can support a group escape or infiltration by making multiple creatures invisible for a limited time. It is strongest when the party coordinates around it; noisy actions or other circumstances can still reveal the group. Because it is used up, save it for a situation where concealment changes the outcome.

20. Eversmoking Bottle

This item creates a large cloud of smoke that can obscure sight and disrupt lines of attack. A rogue can use the confusion to break contact or reposition, but the smoke can hinder allies too, and it does not make its users invisible. It is a tactical tool, not a stealth bonus that works in every room.

21. Hat of Disguise

A useful social and infiltration tool for campaigns where identities, guards, and access matter. Disguise can change how a rogue approaches a conversation or enters a location, but it does not automatically create a convincing backstory or fool close inspection. Its value rises in roleplay-heavy campaigns.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

22. Ring of Mind Shielding

For a rogue who deals with interrogation, magical scrutiny, or dangerous bargains, this ring can protect against certain forms of mental probing and reveal information about a wearer’s soul after death. It is situational rather than a general combat upgrade, but can be exceptionally relevant in intrigue-focused games.

23. Immovable Rod

A simple object with unusually broad uses: create a temporary foothold, block a door, or help rig a climb or escape. It rewards creative problem solving rather than improving a fixed statistic. Its effectiveness depends on what the player proposes and what the DM allows under the item’s rules.

24. Quiver of Ehlonna

A practical option for a ranged rogue who carries multiple types of ammunition or weapons. It makes carrying and accessing gear easier, but does not improve the attacks themselves. It is more useful when the character’s loadout would otherwise be cumbersome.

25. Sending Stones

A pair of stones can support coordination when the rogue scouts ahead or the party splits up. Their usefulness depends on the group having the paired stone and being able to communicate within the item’s limits. They offer no direct combat bonus, but reliable information can prevent a bad encounter.

Choose by rogue role, not rank alone

  • For stealth: Cloak of Elvenkind helps against visual detection; Boots of Elvenkind address sound. Neither solves every method of detection.
  • For mobility: Cloak of Arachnida, Boots of Speed, and Boots of Striding and Springing suit different movement needs. Pick the one that matches the campaign’s terrain and your preferred escape plan.
  • For more reliable attacks: A +1 weapon in the rogue’s preferred weapon type is a dependable choice. Bracer of Flying Daggers is more specialized for a thrown-weapon build.
  • For defense: Cloak of Protection improves general defense, while Ring of Evasion addresses a narrower but common threat. Both require attunement; the cloak also competes for the same slot as other cloaks.
  • For exploration or intrigue: Gloves of Thievery, Hat of Disguise, Bag of Holding, and communication or problem-solving items reward campaigns that make those activities matter.

Account for attunement and equipment slots

Many of the strongest items require attunement, so a character cannot simply stack every attractive benefit. Under the 2014 rules, a character can be attuned to no more than three magic items at a time. Slot competition matters too: a rogue normally wears only one cloak, and a pair of boots provides its benefit only when both are worn. Compare the benefit you would gain with the item you would have to set aside.

Rules-edition and Thief notes

This ranking’s class references use the 2014 5e context unless identified otherwise. Do not assume a class feature from the revised rules applies to a 2014 character. In the revised SRD 5.2 Rogue rules, a level 3 Thief’s Fast Hands lets the Thief take the Magic action as a bonus action for an item that requires that action. At level 13, Use Magic Device permits attunement to up to four magic items, may avoid expending charges on a 1-in-6 roll, and permits use of spell scrolls subject to the feature’s checks. These are revised Thief features, not benefits of every rogue, and should not be applied to a 2014 character without the table using that rules version.
