If you mean “games you can do whatever you want to do,” the best choice depends on whether you want an open building canvas, a world to explore, a system to optimize, or a survival challenge. The list below groups 26 strong options by that freedom, rather than treating “sandbox” as one uniform genre. That approach reflects the breadth described by GameSpot and PCGamesN.
What makes a game a sandbox?
“Sandbox” is a useful umbrella, not a guarantee of unlimited choice. Some games offer open-ended building; others center on survival, exploration, simulation, management, or automation. Many combine those freedoms with missions, progression, combat, or a story. The 26 picks below are recommendations across those styles, not a universal ranking, and several are structured experiences rather than completely unrestricted creative tools.
Platform support also differs. The cited guides cover PC, console, handheld, and mobile-oriented picks, but editions and availability can change; check the current store listing for your platform before buying. GameSpot’s February 15, 2026 guide and Pocket Tactics’ August 22, 2026 update provide platform details for many of these games.
Best sandbox games for building and creative freedom
Minecraft
Best for: A flexible starting point for building, creative play, survival, or co-op. Build freely in Creative mode or gather resources and contend with danger in Survival. It is the broadest all-round recommendation here, but the experience still depends on your chosen mode and edition. GameSpot, Pocket Tactics, and PCGamesN all include it among their sandbox picks.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Terraria
Best for: Players who want crafting and exploration in a 2D world. Terraria mixes construction and resource gathering with combat and progression, so it is less of a pure building canvas than Minecraft. Pocket Tactics highlights it as a portable-friendly sandbox option.
Garry’s Mod
Best for: Physics experiments, player-made creations, addons, and online play. Facepunch describes it as a physics-based sandbox built on a modified version of Valve’s Source Engine; its official page lists Build, Online Co-op, and Addon Support. The experience can vary substantially with addons and what players choose to make. See Garry’s Mod at Facepunch.
LEGO Worlds
Best for: Creating and reshaping worlds from a LEGO-inspired building kit. Pocket Tactics includes it among portable-oriented sandbox games. Its appeal is construction and playful world creation rather than survival pressure.
Dragon Quest Builders 2
Best for: Players who want construction with a story and objectives to guide them. It makes building part of a more directed adventure, rather than leaving every goal entirely to the player. Pocket Tactics includes it among its sandbox recommendations.

Best sandbox games for exploration and discovery
No Man’s Sky
Best for: Space exploration paired with resource gathering and base building. The core draw is moving through a vast science-fiction setting and making places of your own, not simply designing a static structure. GameSpot and PCGamesN both list it as a sandbox pick.
Astroneer
Best for: Space exploration with survival-oriented building. It is a more focused option for players who want to explore alien environments and establish useful bases. Pocket Tactics recommends it among portable-friendly choices.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Best for: Open-world exploration and interacting with a world through its systems. It is not an unrestricted construction game; its sandbox appeal comes from finding routes, experimenting with objects and abilities, and approaching challenges in different ways. Pocket Tactics includes it among its picks.

Best sandbox games for survival, crafting, and emergent stories
Raft
Best for: Survival crafting alone or with friends. The experience revolves around staying alive and developing your resources and base, so it offers a goal-driven kind of freedom rather than a blank creative canvas. GameSpot includes it among its recommendations.
ARK: Survival Evolved
Best for: Survival, dinosaurs, and settlement building. Its survival and combat pressures shape what you can do, making it a better fit for players who want to earn their progress than for those seeking a consequence-free builder. Pocket Tactics lists it among its sandbox picks.
Project Zomboid
Best for: Isometric survival and crafting. It emphasizes planning and making do in a dangerous setting; the freedom is in how you approach survival, not in escaping its pressure. PCGamesN recommends it as a sandbox-adjacent survival option.
Stardew Valley
Best for: Farm management and everyday-life play at a gentler pace. You can decide how to spend much of your time, but the game is organized around routines, relationships, and progression rather than unrestricted construction. Pocket Tactics includes it in its sandbox guide.
My Time at Sandrock
Best for: Guided crafting and helping restore a town. It offers making and resource gathering within a structured story, a useful fit if a completely open-ended game feels aimless. GameSpot specifically distinguishes its story framework from pure creative freedom.

How to choose the right sandbox game
- Want to create without much direction? Start with Minecraft Creative mode, Garry’s Mod, or LEGO Worlds.
- Want exploration to lead the experience? Consider No Man’s Sky, Astroneer, or the Zelda games, keeping in mind that the Zelda titles pair experimentation with an adventure structure.
- Want challenge and survival pressure? Look at Raft, ARK: Survival Evolved, or Project Zomboid.
- Want to build systems rather than settlements? Satisfactory and Dyson Sphere Program focus on automation; Kerbal Space Program shifts that experimentation toward spacecraft engineering.
- Want management and stories to emerge from decisions? RimWorld, Foundation, Two Point Campus, Cityscapes: Sim Builder, and The Sims 4 emphasize simulation or management over unrestricted exploration.
- Want to play with friends or other players? Garry’s Mod’s official page lists Online Co-op; Raft is described by GameSpot as playable alone or with friends; EVE Online centers on a shared multiplayer world. Check the current edition and platform listing for the exact multiplayer support you need.
For readers searching “What are some great sandbox games? Games you can do what ever you want to do?”, the key is deciding what “whatever” means: creating, surviving, exploring, optimizing, or watching a world respond to you. That phrasing appears in an individual reader discussion; the games above answer it in different ways.
