First check whether Riot is reporting an outage, then identify whether the failure is in the Riot Client, the game files, Windows, Vanguard, your network, or your account. The safest order is: check service status, restart the client and Windows, repair the installation, update Windows and your GPU driver, apply the fix for any Vanguard code, and only then perform a clean reinstall or contact Riot Support.
Write down the exact error before changing settings. VAN 9002, VAN9005, a black login screen, and a client that does nothing require different fixes.

Open Riot Games Service Status, select your region, and check the 2XKO section for an incident or scheduled maintenance. If Riot lists a problem, wait for its update instead of repeatedly reinstalling the game.
If no incident is listed, continue troubleshooting locally. A status page may not immediately show every isolated login or regional problem, so an apparently clear status page is not absolute proof that your connection or account is at fault.

Use the symptom that matches your failure

These are troubleshooting branches, not exclusive diagnoses. The same symptom can have more than one cause.
Safe fixes to try first
- Exit 2XKO.
- Exit the Riot Client from the Windows system tray. Closing its window alone may leave the client running.
- If it remains stuck, open Task Manager and end only clearly identified Riot or 2XKO processes.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Riot Client again and launch 2XKO from the client rather than directly opening the game executable.
Do not make “Run as administrator” your default fix. For the Windows file-access error, Riot specifically advises checking that this option is not enabled.

If Windows says it cannot access the file
Locate 2XKO.exe in the installation folder, right-click it, and choose Properties. On the Compatibility tab:
- Make sure Run this program as an administrator is unchecked.
- Make sure compatibility mode is not forcing an older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the game through the Riot Client.
Riot’s file-access guidance says to reinstall if the error continues.

If 2XKO opens and immediately closes
Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates first. To identify your GPU, press Windows + R, enter dxdiag, and open the Display tab. Download the latest driver for the listed model from the official NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel support site. Restart Windows and test again.
Riot identifies outdated graphics drivers and Windows or DirectX problems as possible causes of crashes. Avoid third-party “driver booster” utilities; they add another potential failure point and are not required for this fix.

Use the Riot Client’s repair or file-verification option if it is available in your current client interface. Restart after the repair. Damaged files can explain a launch failure, but repair cannot fix an outage, an account problem, an unsupported Windows configuration, or a Vanguard security error.
If you see a black screen during login
A black screen is not automatically a GPU failure. Riot’s known-issues guidance documents a 2XKO access problem for which a clean uninstall and reinstall may be necessary, potentially more than once.

Uninstall and reinstall 2XKO only after checking Riot’s status page and completing the basic restart and update steps. Reinstallation may replace damaged client files, but it is not guaranteed to resolve an account, server, driver, or security configuration problem.
Fix Vanguard errors separately
VAN 9002: restore Windows Exploit Protection defaults
Riot says VAN 9002 generally indicates that Windows Exploit Protection is disabled or contains custom settings that conflict with Vanguard.
- Open Start and search for Exploit protection.
- Open it in Windows Security.
- Under System settings, set the listed protections to Use default, including Control flow guard, Data Execution Prevention, Force randomization for images, Randomized memory allocation, High entropy ASLR, Validate exception chains, and Validate heap integrity.
- Open Program settings and remove custom entries associated with Riot Games, Riot Vanguard, or Riot titles.
- Restart the PC and test 2XKO.
Follow Riot’s current VAN 9002 instructions. Do not disable Windows security protections globally.
VAN9005: check UEFI and TPM 2.0 first
- Press the Windows key, search
msinfo32, and check BIOS Mode. Riot’s preferred route requires UEFI. - Search
tpm.mscand confirm that TPM is ready and its Specification Version is 2.0. - If supported but disabled, enable UEFI and TPM in your motherboard or computer firmware.
- Restart and test 2XKO.
Firmware menus differ by manufacturer, and an incorrect change can prevent Windows from booting. Use your motherboard or PC manufacturer’s documentation, or get qualified help, if you are not comfortable changing BIOS or UEFI settings.

VAN9005 alternative on Windows 10
Riot also documents a VBS-related alternative for some Windows 10 configurations. In msinfo32, check whether Virtualization-based security is running. If necessary, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype offRestart. If VBS remains active, open Core isolation in Windows Security, turn Memory integrity off, and restart again. This reduces Windows security protections and may affect virtualization or other security features. Treat it as a fallback, not an optimization. Enabling UEFI and TPM 2.0 is preferable where supported. See Riot’s VAN9005 guide for the current instructions.
If the Riot Client will not log in
- Check Riot’s service status again.
- Test the same Riot account in a web browser. If it cannot authenticate there either, the problem may be the account or authentication service rather than 2XKO.
- Turn off a VPN or proxy temporarily.
- Check that your firewall is not blocking the Riot Client, 2XKO, or Vanguard.
- Try another connection, such as a phone hotspot, to separate a local router or ISP issue from an account or service issue.
- Restart the router only after checking service status.
Do not repeatedly enter credentials if the login is failing, and do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection. Riot’s connection troubleshooting guidance also covers DNS, firewall, clean-boot, and clean-reinstall branches.

Try a clean boot after the basic fixes, not before. Temporarily disable nonessential third-party startup services, restart, and launch 2XKO. If it works, re-enable services in groups until the conflict returns. Possible categories include overlays, hardware-monitoring tools, RGB utilities, aggressive antivirus, VPN clients, virtualization tools, and other kernel-level software, but these are possibilities rather than confirmed 2XKO-specific conflicts.

Restore normal startup after testing. A clean boot is a diagnostic step, not a permanent gaming configuration.
When to reinstall
Reinstall when the Riot Client’s repair option fails, the installation remains corrupted, or Riot’s documented black-screen access issue applies. Uninstall 2XKO, restart Windows, and install it again through Riot’s supported client path. Do not keep repeating reinstalls: they cannot resolve a live outage, an account restriction, incompatible Windows security settings, or faulty hardware.

Submit a ticket if the same Vanguard error returns after its official fix, reinstallation changes nothing, the account cannot authenticate on multiple networks, the PC crashes or shows a vgk.sys error, or the error is undocumented.
Include:
- The exact error text and code
- The date and time, including your time zone
- Your Windows version
- GPU model and driver version
- Whether the Riot Client opens
- Whether another Riot game launches
- What changed immediately before the failure
- Screenshots or a short recording
- Riot Repair Tool logs if Support requests them
Avoid registry edits, random command-line changes, driver-cleaner utilities, or deletion of security files unless Riot Support gives you a specific, current instruction.
