Update — August 18, 2026: The Anbernic RG DS is no longer merely a pre-release handheld. Anbernic now lists it through its official store, with a displayed price of $99.99 for the selected configuration. That listing was marked sold out when checked, and the final price varies by storage bundle, shipping, taxes, currency, and region.
The RG DS is a budget clamshell handheld built around two 4-inch touchscreens. Its main attraction is the physical dual-screen layout for Nintendo DS-style emulation—not high-end Android gaming or dependable modern-console emulation.

What the original pre-release report got right
The original story, published on October 30, 2025, reported that pricing and specifications for Anbernic’s dual-screen handheld had emerged before its official release. Anbernic later promoted the device for pre-order, including a November 2025 announcement video.

The broad picture was accurate: the RG DS is a clamshell handheld with two 4-inch 640×480 displays, an RK3568 processor, Android support, a stylus, and a price in the sub-$100 class. What has changed is the status of the product. It is now an official retail device, and Anbernic has also listed Linux configurations.

“Global pricing” is not one universal checkout price. Regional storefronts can use different currencies, shipping origins, promotions, stock levels, and taxes. A “Ships From: US” option also does not necessarily mean that every variant is stocked domestically. Import duties, sales tax, delivery charges, currency conversion, and temporary marketplace coupons can all change the final amount.
The safest comparison is the delivered price for the exact configuration that is actually in stock.
Android 14 versus Linux
Android 14 is the main advertised platform and is the more flexible choice for installing Android applications, emulators, streaming services, and other tablet-like software. Anbernic also lists Linux-specific bundles, and a Linux release was reported in May 2026.

Linux may appeal to buyers who want a more focused, console-style emulation interface. However, a Linux microSD bundle should not automatically be interpreted as a fully documented dual-boot system. Before changing cards or installing an image, verify the current instructions for the specific RG DS revision.

- Back up the original microSD card before experimenting.
- Confirm whether a bundle includes a card, an installed operating system, or only downloadable software.
- Do not assume Linux removes Android permanently—or that Android and Linux can be selected from a boot menu—unless Anbernic’s documentation explicitly says so.
- Expect community images and compatibility information to change after launch.
What it means for Nintendo DS emulation
The dual-screen layout is the RG DS’s decisive advantage. Two physical displays make it possible to keep gameplay and maps, menus, guides, or touch controls visible at the same time. Capacitive touch and the included stylus are also better suited to touch-heavy games than a conventional single-screen handheld.
Anbernic advertises quick focus switching between screens, split-screen use of two applications, stylus input, real-time translation, and guide functions. Those are manufacturer claims rather than independent measurements. The practical experience will also depend on the emulator, its control mapping, and the individual game.
Touchscreen mapping is an important caveat. A DS game that expects frequent precise input may need manual configuration, and the two screens may not behave identically across every Android application or Linux emulator. The available evidence establishes the hardware and advertised features, but does not prove that every dual-screen application, touch control, hinge angle, brightness level, or focus-switching function works equally well.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPerformance expectations
The RK3568 is a modest, older ARM platform. It should be viewed as adequate for older retro systems and Android applications, with the dual-screen design doing most of the differentiating work.

Anbernic’s technical material lists support for categories including Nintendo DS, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Saturn, PSP, arcade systems, Game Boy platforms, SNES, NES, Mega Drive/Genesis, PC Engine, and WonderSwan Color. A supported-format list is not the same as a full-speed compatibility guarantee. Performance can vary by game, emulator, rendering backend, resolution, and settings.
There is no basis here for promising universal PSP, Saturn, Dreamcast, or Nintendo 64 performance, and the RG DS should not be treated as a dependable 3DS or demanding modern Android gaming device. Buyers should choose it for the physical dual-screen experience, not for maximum frames per dollar.

At 321g and 160 × 91 × 21.5mm, the RG DS is compact when closed but not an ultra-light pocket device. The clamshell protects both screens during transport, while also adding a hinge and lid whose long-term durability cannot be judged from the specification sheet alone.
Stereo speakers, a headphone jack, vibration, a gyroscope, and a Hall sensor provide useful hardware features. The included stylus is convenient, but it is a small accessory that can be misplaced; buyers should check replacement options rather than assuming every generic stylus will fit the holder.

The six-hour battery figure is Anbernic’s estimate, not an independent test. Screen brightness, wireless use, emulator load, touch activity, and the chosen operating system will affect real battery life.
Storage bundles: which one makes sense?
The 32GB internal storage is not equivalent to a large licensed game library. A larger microSD card adds capacity and may simplify setup, but buyers should understand what software is supplied and whether they want to use it.
- Base configuration: sensible for buyers who already own a reliable microSD card and want to configure Android and emulators themselves.
- Linux bundle: worth considering if a focused Linux interface is the priority and the supplied card or installation method is clearly documented.
- 128GB or 256GB bundle: useful for buyers who need more space, but not automatically better value if the included software is unwanted or the card quality is uncertain.
Use a reputable card, keep backups, and do not assume a large card includes legally licensed commercial games. Commercial ROMs and BIOS files can raise copyright and licensing issues. The hardware and emulators are separate from the legality of obtaining or distributing game files; homebrew and freely distributed software are different from commercial game ROMs.

Who should buy the RG DS?
It is a good fit for:
- Players who specifically want two physical screens in a modern clamshell.
- Nintendo DS fans who value touch input and a built-in stylus.
- Retro users comfortable configuring Android emulators.
- Buyers who prioritise form factor over premium controls or maximum performance.
- People who can compare the final delivered price rather than relying on the headline figure.
It is a poor fit for:
- Anyone seeking reliable 3DS emulation or demanding modern Android games.
- Buyers expecting Nintendo-level hinge construction, software polish, or first-party compatibility.
- People who want a plug-and-play system with no emulator or storage management.
- Shoppers who need guaranteed stock or transparent regional pricing without checking checkout details.
- Readers who do not actually need two screens; a conventional single-screen handheld may be simpler and better value for general retro emulation.
Verdict
The Anbernic RG DS is a real, launched product rather than a lingering leak. The official store’s displayed $99.99 price places it in an attractive budget range, but that figure is time-sensitive, configuration-dependent, and not a guaranteed worldwide price. Stock was marked sold out for the selected listing when checked.
Its appeal is unusually specific: a low-cost clamshell with two touchscreens, a stylus, Android/Linux options, and enough hardware for a broad range of older emulation targets. The RK3568 does not make it a high-performance handheld, and Anbernic’s platform list should not be mistaken for independent proof of perfect compatibility.
If physical dual-screen gaming is the reason to buy, the RG DS is compelling. If the goal is simply the strongest emulation performance, modern Android gaming, or a polished Nintendo-like experience, its compromises are much harder to justify.
