For an FM24 Coventry City save, build around Milan van Ewijk, Haji Wright and Ben Sheaf. Together, they offer a useful right-flank outlet, a flexible forward option and a central midfield base. They are a role-balanced shortlist, not an objectively best trio for every tactic or database.
Three Coventry City players to build around
The recommendations are based on the positions listed in a third-party FM24 Coventry guide, rather than direct gameplay testing. Think of them as a starting point for shaping your system around the squad.
Milan van Ewijk: a right-side outlet
The guide lists van Ewijk in right-sided defender, wing-back and attacking-midfield roles. That gives you a natural candidate for a system that wants width and forward movement from the flank. How prominently he features will depend on the role and duties you assign, as well as the rest of your right side.
Haji Wright: a flexible forward
Wright is listed as an attacking option on either flank and as a striker. That positional range makes him a useful choice if you want flexibility in the forward line. The available evidence does not establish his attributes, likely output or guaranteed scoring performance in your save.
#1 Best Overall
Ben Sheaf: a central midfield base
Sheaf is listed as a central midfielder and defensive midfielder, giving the trio a more central, structural presence alongside the two attack-oriented picks. Real-world context adds weight to his case: Coventry’s 2023/24 season summary names him both Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season. Those awards describe his actual club season, not an FM24 rating or predicted in-game performance.
How to choose for your tactic and database
Before settling on the trio, check how they fit the team you want to build and which FM24 database you are using. The guide distinguishes its FM24 player pool from a separate update that changes transfers, squads, promotions and relegations, so exact roster status can differ by update.

- The best-selling, incredibly realistic football management drives on with over 1,000 improvements and enhancements in Football Manager 2014. The 3D match engine has seen extensive improvements, including enhanced AI, improved lighting and player animation, individual player character and kit models, more realistic player reaction to on-field incidents and a range of optimisations which combine to make this the best looking and fastest FM Match Engine yet. On the pitch, redesigned tactics management makes the player roles and team strategies even more prominent. Improvements to rival managers’ AI allow them to adapt their tactics more readily over time.
- FM 2014 features a revamped transfer module where opposing clubs and managers adopt a more realistic approach when making or responding to transfer offers. In addition, a number of new ‘real world’ transfer clauses have been added, such as the facility to loan a player back to the club he’s just been bought from and the option to offer a combination of cash and loan players, as well as new contract clauses such as a sub bench appearance fee. On top of this, the old ‘turn-based’ system of transfer negotiations can now be done two ways, the tried and tested system and a new ‘live’ system, similar to that used in FM’s contract negotiations.
- The 3D match engine has seen extensive improvements, including enhanced AI, improved lighting and player animation, individual player character and kit models, more realistic player reaction to on-field incidents and a range of optimisations which combine to make this the best looking and fastest FM Match Engine yet. Major changes have also been made to FM 2014’s user interface. Key areas have been redesigned – including the training overview page, the transfer centre and the news homepage – while widespread changes have been made across the game’s user interface. The language employed throughout the game has also enjoyed a major overhaul and now corresponds more closely to the language of real world football.
- Start with your tactic: van Ewijk suits a plan that uses the right flank for width or forward movement; Wright offers options across the front; Sheaf covers central or defensive midfield. These are listed roles, not a guarantee that every role will suit every system.
- Check your database: use the in-game squad and player information for your save before making plans based on exact availability or role suitability. The guide’s separate community update changes squad details.
- Judge development in your own save: the cited material does not verify current ability, potential, attributes, transfer availability or development outcomes across FM24 versions. Use the information in your loaded database rather than assuming those details.
When Ellis Simms may be your forward pick
If you would rather foreground real-world scoring context, consider Ellis Simms instead of Wright. Coventry’s 2023/24 season summary names Simms as the club’s top goalscorer. That is useful background, but it does not show that he will outperform Wright in FM24; compare their profiles and fit in your own database.

The EFL’s 2023/24 squad list includes van Ewijk, Wright, Sheaf, Simms and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto among Coventry’s registered in-squad players. This confirms their Coventry context for that season; it does not establish their status in every later database or determine their in-game roles.
