For a Compose application, usually name the service and let Compose manage individual container identifiers; set container_name only when you have a specific, documented reason.

1. Name standalone containers for their role and environment
A useful name answers two questions immediately: what does this container do, and which environment does it belong to? Names such as api-dev, reports-worker, and postgres-test are more useful than opaque identifiers when you are reading logs, opening a shell, or cleaning up an old deployment.

Docker lets you choose that identifier with the --name option on docker run. The custom name adds meaning to the container and can be used when referring to it in later Docker commands or on a user-defined network.
A practical naming formula
Use a short role first, then add the environment or other qualifier that distinguishes it. A simple pattern is:

If one host runs several instances of the same role, add a stable qualifier that explains the difference, such as a region or function: api-eu-dev and api-us-dev. Do not put transient details in a name unless they are genuinely useful. A timestamp or random suffix makes a container harder to find when you already know its purpose.
Use the name in everyday commands
Once a container has a deliberate name, use that name instead of copying an automatically generated identifier:
docker run --name api-dev -d my-api:latest
docker logs api-dev
docker exec -it api-dev shThe same identifier works as the target for routine inspection and troubleshooting. This is especially helpful on a development machine hosting several services for a game, tool, or web application.
Keep names easy to type
Prefer lowercase words separated by hyphens or underscores. Avoid spaces and decorative punctuation. A name should be recognizable in a terminal, shell script, issue report, and monitoring output without quoting or escaping it. Keep role words consistent across environments: if the development service is called api-dev, do not call the staging equivalent backend-preprod unless the distinction is intentional and documented.
2. In Compose, treat the service name as the stable identity
Docker Compose introduces several names that are easy to confuse: the service name in the YAML file, the container identifier, and the hostname used inside the network. For most multi-container applications, the service name is the identity other services should use.

Service names are for discovery
Define services with clear keys:
services:
api:

image: my-worker:latestOther services should connect to api or worker as service names. Compose provides network discovery for those names, so an application can locate the API by its service name even if Compose recreates the underlying container and its IP address changes.
This is the key reason not to hard-code a generated container identifier in application configuration. A recreated container may have a different individual identifier or address, while the service-name route remains the intended discovery mechanism.
Service name, container name, and hostname are different

These names can be related without being identical. A service called api can be reached by that service name while Compose assigns and manages the actual container identifier. Set a custom hostname only when software inside the container needs a particular hostname; it does not replace the service name used for Compose discovery.
Why explicit container_name is usually the wrong default
Compose can manage container identifiers for you. That is valuable when you run more than one replica or recreate a deployment. An explicit container_name pins the service to one container and Compose will not scale that service beyond one container. If you later try to run multiple instances, the fixed name becomes a constraint rather than a convenience.
Use container_name only when another tool or a legacy integration truly requires a known Docker-level name. Otherwise, keep the service key stable, connect through that key, and let Compose generate identifiers that distinguish the project and instance.

3. Make names valid, predictable, and isolated by project
Follow the character rules
For Compose, a container_name must match this pattern:
[a-zA-Z0-9][a-zA-Z0-9_.-]+
In practice, begin with a letter or number and then use letters, numbers, underscores, periods, or hyphens. A lowercase hyphenated style is easiest to read and most portable. Names containing spaces or other punctuation do not fit that Compose rule.
Hostnames have a separate requirement: a Compose hostname must be a valid RFC 1123 hostname. A string that looks acceptable as a Docker identifier may still be unsuitable as a hostname, so do not assume the two fields have identical rules.
Use project names to separate deployments
Compose project names provide isolation when the same application is run more than once on one host. Instead of forcing every container to have a globally unique hand-written name, give each deployment a distinct project identity. For example:

Compose documents several ways to control the project name:
- Pass it explicitly with the
-pcommand-line option. - Set the
COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAMEenvironment variable. - Use the top-level
namesetting in the Compose file. - Rely on the directory name when no higher-priority setting is supplied.
Choose one approach for your team and apply it consistently. Project-level isolation is preferable to adding increasingly long environment and deployment details to every individual container name.
Choosing a naming strategy by lifecycle
The right choice depends on who owns the container lifecycle and how other software finds it.

A step-by-step naming workflow
- Identify the lifecycle owner. Decide whether the container is launched directly with
docker runor managed as part of a Compose project. - Write the role. Choose a noun that describes the workload, such as
api,worker,database, ormatchmaker. - Add only useful context. For standalone containers, append an environment or intentional instance qualifier, such as
-dev,-test, or-staging. - Normalize the characters. Prefer lowercase and hyphens; remove spaces and punctuation that are not allowed or are difficult to type.
- For Compose, name the service first. Make the YAML key the name clients use for network connections.
- Reject unnecessary fixed names. Before adding
container_name, check whether an external process genuinely needs a Docker-level identifier. If not, omit it so scaling and recreation remain available. - Set project isolation. When multiple deployments share a host, choose a project name with
-p,COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME, the top-levelname, or a deliberate directory name. - Check hostname needs separately. Add
hostnameonly for software that needs it, and verify that the value is an RFC 1123 hostname.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using a container name as the application’s network address
A Compose application should use service names such as api and worker for inter-service connections. Replace configuration that points to a generated container identifier with the appropriate service key.
Adding container_name to every Compose service
This removes Compose’s ability to scale each of those services beyond one container. Remove the fixed name unless a documented integration depends on it, then update clients to use the service name.

Mixing naming styles between environments
Inconsistent names slow down diagnosis: one environment may call a component backend while another calls it api. Establish a role vocabulary and apply the same service keys across development, testing, and staging. Put environment separation at the project level where possible.
Assuming a hostname and service name are interchangeable
They serve different purposes and have different validity rules. Keep the service key for Compose discovery; configure a hostname only when the process inside the container requires one.

Test names against the relevant rule before they become part of scripts or deployment files. A Compose container_name must satisfy its documented character pattern, while a Compose hostname must satisfy RFC 1123. A conservative lowercase, hyphen-separated convention avoids most portability problems.

A standalone local stack might use:
