A practical guide to 30 strong online games for friend groups, organized by session type, player count, platform support, cross-play, subscriptions, and learning curve.

There is no single best online game for every friend group. Start with Fortnite if you need a free, cross-platform option with several modes; choose Fall Guys for low-pressure short sessions; Deep Rock Galactic for excellent four-player co-op; Minecraft or Stardew Valley for a shared world; and Baldur’s Gate 3 or It Takes Two for a structured co-op adventure.

This guide organizes 30 strong current picks by the kind of night your group wants—not as a universal popularity ranking. Player counts, editions, cross-play, subscriptions, account requirements, and live-service features can vary by platform and region, so check the relevant store or support page before buying. The recommendations below reflect the supplied research current to August 11, 2026.

Quick picks by group mood

If your group wants… Start with… Why it fits
A game everyone can join quickly Fortnite Free-to-play, cross-platform parties, Battle Royale, and several additional experiences.
Short, silly sessions Fall Guys or Party Animals Both are easy to understand and built around amusing physical chaos rather than a steep learning curve.
A reliable four-player co-op game Deep Rock Galactic Four distinct classes give every player a useful role during cave expeditions.
A persistent shared world Minecraft, Valheim, or Stardew Valley Build, explore, farm, craft, and return to the same world over multiple sessions.
A competitive free-to-play match Rocket League or Apex Legends Both support mixed-platform groups, but one is immediately readable while the other is a more demanding shooter.
Horror and voice-chat panic Phasmophobia A four-player investigation game where communication and evidence gathering matter as much as courage.
A complete story campaign Baldur’s Gate 3 A party-based RPG with online and LAN co-op where group decisions shape the story.
Exactly two players It Takes Two A purpose-built two-player adventure with online, couch, and split-screen co-op.

Before choosing: the multiplayer details that matter

Cross-play is not the same as online multiplayer

A game can support online play without allowing PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC players to join the same party. Cross-platform play is specifically verified in the supplied research for titles including Fortnite, Minecraft Bedrock, Fall Guys, Rocket League, Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, Sea of Thieves, No Man’s Sky, and Palworld. Even then, platform settings, edition, region, matchmaking rules, and publisher accounts can affect how it works.

Minecraft is the most important edition trap: Bedrock supports cross-play across supported Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, and mobile devices, while Java cross-play is between Windows, macOS, and Linux. Java and Bedrock players cannot simply join the same Realm. Confirm that everyone owns or can access the same edition before setting up a shared world.

Console online subscriptions may be required

Subscription rules depend on the game and platform. Nintendo says Nintendo Switch Online enables online play in compatible games and provides GameChat on Nintendo Switch 2. PlayStation says most PS4 and PS5 online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus. Xbox Wire says Game Pass Ultimate includes online console multiplayer. Free-to-play games can have different requirements, so do not assume that one rule applies to every title in this list.

Voice chat is often part of the game

Coordination is central to games such as Apex Legends, Deep Rock Galactic, Sea of Thieves, Phasmophobia, and Baldur’s Gate 3. EA specifically documents in-game voice chat for cross-platform Apex parties, but not every game offers the same voice features or controls. A gaming headset with microphone is a practical setup upgrade for groups that regularly play co-op or competitive games.

The easiest games to start tonight

1. Fortnite — best for mixed-platform groups and variety

Fortnite is the safest all-purpose recommendation when a group has different devices, different skill levels, or different ideas about what to play. Epic documents cross-platform friend parties and Duo or Squad play, and the game offers much more than Battle Royale. Friends can switch between competitive matches, party modes, and other Fortnite experiences without leaving the same broader ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is free-to-play, but everyone may need an Epic account, and platform-specific cross-play settings can matter. Fortnite is a particularly good first choice when the group wants flexibility rather than one narrowly defined game mode.

2. Fall Guys — best for casual groups and short sessions

Fall Guys is built for groups that want quick laughs without learning a complicated control scheme. Its obstacle-course competitions are easy to understand, while cooperative challenges and competitive free-for-alls give the party some variety. It supports cross-play, cross-platform parties, and cross-progression, with parties of up to four friends.

The low barrier to entry is its main advantage. Players looking for a serious competitive ladder or deep long-term progression may outgrow it, but it is one of the strongest choices for a mixed-skill group that only has an hour to play.

3. Rocket League — best for quick competitive matches

Rocket League turns soccer into a compact, skill-based game of cars, boosts, aerials, and spectacular mistakes. Matches are short enough for a casual evening, yet the basic controls have enough depth to support long-term improvement. Epic confirms cross-platform matchmaking among the Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam, and friends on different platforms can use private matches.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

New players should expect a real learning curve once the group starts caring about positioning and aerial play. For an easier first night, keep the matches casual and resist immediately judging the group by ranked results.

4. Among Us — best for social deduction and betrayal

Among Us is a strong fit for groups that enjoy arguing, bluffing, and trying to read one another. Innersloth describes online or local-Wi-Fi play for four to 15 players: Crewmates complete tasks while Impostors attempt to eliminate the group and avoid detection.

The game depends more on discussion than mechanical skill, so a voice-chat group is ideal. It is less satisfying for players who dislike deception, repeated accusations, or being eliminated before the round ends.

5. Party Animals — best for physics-based party chaos

Party Animals is a useful alternative to Fall Guys for groups that want direct physical brawling rather than obstacle-course racing. Its physics-driven characters create slapstick fights, improvised teamwork, and frequent reversals. The Steam listing supports online co-op, local multiplayer, same-screen play, and Remote Play with Friends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It works especially well when the goal is to laugh at failed grabs and accidental knockouts rather than optimize a strategy. Its appeal is immediate, but groups seeking a deep competitive system should choose one of the tactical games later in the list.

6. Minecraft Dungeons — best for accessible four-player dungeon crawling

Minecraft Dungeons takes the familiar Minecraft visual style and places it in a more directed action-adventure format. Instead of building an open-ended world, the group explores combat-focused levels, fights enemies, and improves its equipment. Minecraft Help documents multiplayer and cross-platform play for the title.

It is a good bridge for players who like Minecraft but want clearer objectives and less pressure to invent their own activities. It should not be confused with the main Minecraft sandbox: the two games provide very different kinds of co-op.

The best competitive games for friends

7. Apex Legends — best for free squad-based battle royale

Apex Legends is a strong choice for a group that wants a serious free-to-play shooter with distinct character abilities and squad coordination. EA says players can form parties across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, the EA App, and Steam for PC, with in-game voice chat available in cross-platform parties.

There is an important matchmaking caveat: console and PC matchmaking behave differently when a mixed-platform party queues together. Confirm the current rules before promising that console players will always remain in console matchmaking. Apex also demands more from aim, movement, and decision-making than a casual party game.

8. Overwatch 2 — best for role-based team coordination

Overwatch 2 suits groups that like short team battles but want more defined roles than a traditional arena shooter. Heroes have different abilities and responsibilities, so a coordinated team can combine offense, defense, and support rather than relying only on individual aim. The official Steam listing describes it as a free-to-play team-based action game with 5v5 or 6v6 battles, online PvP, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer.

Its large roster can make the first few sessions feel busy. Groups should focus on learning a small number of heroes and basic team roles instead of trying to understand the entire game immediately.

9. VALORANT — best for tactical rounds and communication

VALORANT is a free 5v5 tactical shooter in which agents combine precise gunplay with distinctive abilities. Riot’s official description includes attack-and-defense rounds, Competitive and Unranked modes, Deathmatch, and Spike Rush.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a demanding choice for friends who enjoy structured improvement. A single careless death can leave a player watching the rest of a round, and communication matters considerably more than it does in a casual party game. It is rewarding for a group willing to learn callouts, map control, and economy, but not the best pick for a relaxed drop-in session.

10. Counter-Strike 2 — best for precision-focused PC teams

Counter-Strike 2 is aimed at groups that want objective-based tactical shooting with a high skill ceiling. Valve describes it as a free upgrade to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive featuring Premier mode, ratings, regional and global leaderboards, dynamic smoke grenades, and online multiplayer.

The game rewards discipline, accuracy, utility use, and repeated practice. It is a poor fit for friends who want cooperative progression or a forgiving first shooter, but an excellent fit for players who enjoy reviewing mistakes and steadily improving together. It is primarily a PC-group recommendation.

11. League of Legends — best for teams ready to learn a complex MOBA

League of Legends is a free 5v5 multiplayer online battle arena in which teams fight through lanes and defenses to destroy the opposing Nexus. Riot lists multiple modes, including Summoner’s Rift, ARAM, ARAM: Mayhem, and Teamfight Tactics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a major commitment compared with most party games. Players must learn champions, roles, items, objectives, and a large amount of game-specific vocabulary. Match length can also be substantial. Friends who enjoy strategy and gradual mastery may find it endlessly rewarding; casual groups may prefer ARAM or a different game entirely.

12. Dota 2 — best for deep strategy and experienced players

Dota 2 is another free-to-play MOBA, but it is especially well suited to groups looking for extraordinary strategic depth. Valve highlights more than 100 heroes, regular updates, matchmaking, co-op versus bots, and free access to all heroes.

The ability to practice against bots is useful for newcomers, but it does not remove the steep learning curve. Dota 2 is best for a stable group willing to study mechanics and tolerate difficult early matches—not for friends who want to understand everything in one evening.

13. For Honor — best for skill-based melee combat

For Honor offers a different kind of competitive experience: close-range weapon combat built around timing, defense, and reading an opponent. Ubisoft describes ongoing multiplayer support, multiple modes, and cross-platform group play through Ubisoft accounts. Its formats include 1v1, 2v2, and 4v4.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That range makes it adaptable to different group sizes. The combat can feel unusually personal and demanding, so it works best for friends who enjoy duels and deliberate practice rather than purely casual button-mashing.

14. Halo Infinite — best for free arena and large-scale shooter play

Halo Infinite is a strong option for Xbox and PC groups that want arena-shooter fundamentals alongside larger battles. The official Steam listing is the current reference for multiplayer availability, free-to-play status, and PC requirements.

JBL Quantum 100M2 Wired Gaming Headset, Detachable Mic - Black
  • JBL QUANTUMSOUND SIGNATURE: From the faintest footsteps to the loudest explosion, this wired gaming headset puts you at the center of every scene—immersive, accurate audio that turns every match into a competitive edge.
  • DETACHABLE DIRECTIONAL MICROPHONE: Rally your squad without repeating yourself. The voice-focus directional microphone detaches when you're flying solo and includes a mute option—because this mic headset knows when to talk and when to stay quiet.
  • MEMORY FOAM COMFORT: Marathon sessions hit different in these over-ear headphones—lightweight build, breathable fabric ear cushions, and memory foam padding keep you locked in without the fatigue. Game longer. Complain less.
  • SPATIAL SOUND COMPATIBILITY: Hear exactly where sound is coming from. This wired headset is fully compatible with Windows Sonic spatial sound on Windows 10 PCs and Xbox ONE—so the game world feels like it's happening around you.
  • CROSS-PLATFORM READY: One 3.5mm jack, every platform—PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, Mac, and VR. This cross-platform gaming headset goes wherever the game is.*

Because Halo Infinite is a live-service game, modes and platform details can change. Check the current listing before arranging a session, particularly if your group needs a specific mode or is playing across Xbox and PC. It is a better fit for groups that enjoy movement, weapon control, and map positioning than for players seeking a story-first co-op campaign.

Cooperative action and survival games

15. Deep Rock Galactic — best pure four-player co-op

Deep Rock Galactic is one of the clearest recommendations in this entire guide for a stable group of four. It is a one-to-four-player co-op FPS in which space-mining dwarves explore procedurally generated caves, mine minerals, complete objectives, and survive alien hordes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its class-based design gives each player a distinct contribution, making teamwork feel purposeful rather than cosmetic. The group must coordinate movement, equipment, and survival, but the game remains approachable compared with a highly competitive shooter. It is less suitable for a group that frequently has five or more players.

16. HELLDIVERS 2 — best for coordinated missions and friendly-fire disasters

HELLDIVERS 2 is a mission-based third-person squad shooter built around weapons, support abilities, and stratagems such as turrets and airstrikes. Success depends on moving as a unit and choosing the right tools for each objective.

Friendly fire is part of the experience, which creates memorable teamwork and equally memorable accidents. The game includes mature violence, so it is not a family-friendly default. Choose it when the group enjoys frantic PvE combat and can laugh when a badly placed airstrike eliminates everyone.

17. Destiny 2 — best for a persistent sci-fi shooter

Destiny 2 combines story missions, cooperative PvE activities, loot, and PvP in a persistent science-fiction setting. Its official Steam listing identifies co-op, PvE, PvP, and free-to-play elements, giving a group several ways to play together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The complication is its changing live-service structure. Optional paid expansions and rotating content affect which campaigns and activities are available, so check exactly what is included before anyone buys an expansion. Destiny 2 suits friends who want a long-running shooter hobby more than a game they will finish in one weekend.

18. Palworld — best for creature collection and survival crafting

Palworld combines creature collection with open-world survival, crafting, base building, and online co-op. The current Steam listing also identifies cross-platform multiplayer, making it a useful option for groups that want a shared world rather than a sequence of discrete matches.

Its broad mix of systems means the group can spend a session gathering resources, improving a base, exploring, or fighting. The current listing gives July 9, 2026 as its release date, so it is one of the newer options here; check the current platform and development information before purchase.

19. Valheim — best for long-term survival progression

Valheim is a survival-crafting game for one to 10 players, with procedural generation, exploration, building, crafting, and player-hosted dedicated servers. It is a strong fit for friends who want a world that gradually develops from a rough camp into a substantial settlement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Progression can be demanding and the survival grind will not appeal to everyone. The Steam listing at the August 11, 2026 research cutoff still labeled Valheim as Early Access and listed a planned September 9, 2026 departure date. Since that date may have passed by publication or reading, verify the current development status rather than relying on the old label.

20. ARK: Survival Evolved — best for dinosaur survival groups

ARK: Survival Evolved centers on surviving a mysterious island, taming primeval creatures, building a base, and dealing with other players. Its multiplayer structure supports co-op and MMO-style play, giving groups room to create a long-running shared project.

ARK is complex and grind-heavy. Taming, resource gathering, threats, and base management can consume considerable time, while its older technical presentation may feel rough beside newer survival games. Choose it for a group that wants a demanding hobby world, not a quick after-work match.

21. Terraria — best content-rich 2D sandbox co-op

Terraria is a multiplayer action-adventure that combines exploration, crafting, building, survival, combat, and online co-op. Its 2D presentation conceals a very large amount of discovery and progression, making it a good choice for friends who enjoy uncovering secrets and upgrading equipment together.

  • 【Professional Gaming Headset】Gaming headphones with 6.5ft high tensile strength, anti-tangle braided cable, rotary volume control and button microphone mute.

It is especially appealing to groups that do not need modern 3D graphics or a tightly guided quest structure. New players may initially find its progression unclear, so agreeing on a shared goal—building, exploring, or preparing for a boss—helps keep the session focused.

Relaxed games and long-term shared worlds

22. Minecraft — best for creative groups and persistent worlds

Minecraft remains the most flexible long-term recommendation because the group decides what the game is about. Friends can build, explore, survive, create redstone projects, or maintain a shared world over months. Official Minecraft documentation confirms online servers and Realms, with Realms functioning as persistent private servers and friend invites simplifying access.

Bedrock cross-play covers supported Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, mobile, and other devices, while Java cross-play covers Windows, macOS, and Linux. The editions are not interchangeable for ordinary Realm play, so settle the edition question before anyone creates the server. Minecraft is ideal for creative groups and families, but less useful if everyone wants a clear objective every time they log in.

23. Sea of Thieves — best for social crews and shared adventures

Sea of Thieves is built around a crew sharing one ship, one map, and one set of plans. The current Steam listing identifies online co-op, online PvP, and cross-platform multiplayer, while the pirate-adventure structure includes treasure hunting, sea monsters, exploration, and ship combat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Communication and shared planning are the point. A crew might spend an evening sailing, solving clues, fighting another ship, or simply getting distracted by an unexpected encounter. Sessions are open-ended, so it is less satisfying for groups that want clearly bounded 15-minute matches.

24. No Man’s Sky — best for relaxed exploration and base building

No Man’s Sky suits friends who want a shared universe rather than constant combat. Its procedurally generated setting supports space travel, exploration, survival, and base building, and Steam lists online co-op, online PvP, and cross-platform multiplayer.

The game is at its best when the group sets its own pace: explore together, build near one another, or dip in and out of the persistent universe. Players looking for a tightly scripted campaign or frequent high-stakes battles may find its open-ended structure too loose.

25. Stardew Valley — best for low-pressure cooperative play

Stardew Valley offers farming, exploration, routine, and conversation-friendly progression. Steam lists online co-op, LAN co-op, shared-screen co-op, and split-screen support, so it works for both remote and local groups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The shared routine is the attraction: decide how to manage the farm, explore mines, improve relationships, or simply spend an in-game season together. It is a poor fit for players who need constant action, but one of the best choices for friends who want a calm world they can revisit.

Horror and improvised chaos

26. Phasmophobia — best for four-player ghost investigation

Phasmophobia is a four-player online co-op psychological horror game in which the team uses ghost-hunting equipment to gather evidence. Communication is central: players must compare observations, manage equipment, and decide how much danger they are willing to tolerate.

It supports online co-op and VR, giving groups another way to experience the investigation. The game is strongest when everyone participates in the evidence hunt; it is less suitable for friends who prefer action-heavy horror or do not enjoy being frightened by uncertainty.

27. Lethal Company — best for unpredictable horror and comic failure

Lethal Company sends a group to scavenge abandoned moons for scrap. Its co-op horror structure creates improvised teamwork: players split up to search, communicate warnings, and attempt to extract valuable material before the situation becomes unmanageable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The appeal is unpredictability rather than a polished competitive ladder. Sessions often turn into stories about a plan that failed spectacularly, which makes it excellent for smaller groups that enjoy nervous laughter and emergent disasters. Check the current platform and player support before buying, as the supplied listing confirms online co-op but does not establish broad cross-play.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Story-driven co-op and focused adventures

28. Baldur’s Gate 3 — best for a committed story group

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a party-based Dungeons & Dragons RPG in which player choices shape the story. Steam lists online co-op, LAN co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer, giving groups several ways to share the campaign.

It is ideal for friends who can commit to the same campaign and discuss decisions together. It is less suitable for casual drop-in play: campaign continuity, different character choices, and long sessions matter. Agree in advance on whether the group will follow the main story, explore every distraction, or allow one player to make most of the decisions.

29. Elden Ring Nightreign — best for difficult three-player runs

Elden Ring Nightreign is designed around cooperative three-player action. PlayStation describes a structure in which teams survive two nights and confront a major boss on the third, creating a more compact run-based format than a traditional open-world campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a good fit for friends who want demanding combat and repeated attempts at difficult encounters. The three-player limit is important: it is not a flexible large-group game. On PlayStation, online play requires PlayStation Plus, so confirm that requirement before organizing the group.

30. It Takes Two — best for exactly two players

It Takes Two was created specifically for co-op and supports online or couch co-op, including split-screen play. Its Friend’s Pass lets one owner invite another player for free, making it unusually convenient for a pair that wants a guided adventure without buying two copies.

This is a two-player game, not a choice for a larger party. Cross-generation play is supported, but cross-platform play is not, so a PlayStation player and an Xbox player cannot simply use the Friend’s Pass together. Choose it when two people want a focused, story-led experience with constantly changing cooperative challenges.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Count the players first. Among Us supports four to 15; Deep Rock Galactic is built for one to four; Phasmophobia is a four-player recommendation; Elden Ring Nightreign is designed for three; and It Takes Two is for exactly two. Do not buy based only on genre.
  2. List everyone’s platforms. Verify cross-play for the specific title, not just the series. Fortnite, Minecraft Bedrock, Fall Guys, Rocket League, Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, Sea of Thieves, No Man’s Sky, and Palworld are among the cross-platform options researched here, but account and matchmaking restrictions can still apply.
  3. Confirm editions and accounts. Minecraft Java and Bedrock are separate multiplayer ecosystems for ordinary play. Fortnite can require Epic accounts and relevant cross-play settings. For Honor uses Ubisoft accounts for cross-platform group play.
  4. Check online-access requirements. Review Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus, or Xbox Game Pass benefits for the exact game. Free-to-play status does not automatically mean every platform has identical online requirements.
  5. Agree on the session format. Pick a short-match game such as Fall Guys or Rocket League if people may arrive late. Pick Minecraft, Valheim, Sea of Thieves, or Baldur’s Gate 3 only if the group is comfortable with persistent progress and longer sessions.
  6. Use voice chat thoughtfully. A microphone is especially valuable in tactical shooters, survival games, sailing games, and horror investigations. Set a private party or lobby when the game supports it, and check voice permissions for younger players.

If a PC game will not launch or runs badly

Start with the basics: confirm the game’s current system requirements, update the operating system, verify the installation through the relevant storefront, close conflicting overlays, and install the latest graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer. A driver problem can affect compatibility, but it is only one possible cause of crashes, stuttering, or missing devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbyte Driver Updater is one optional tool that searches for and updates device drivers. Treat it as a troubleshooting aid, not a guaranteed gaming upgrade: it will not automatically reduce latency, increase FPS in every game, or fix every crash. If you use any driver-management utility, review what it proposes before installing changes and keep a restore or rollback path.

What may change after publication

Live-service games can change modes, matchmaking, supported platforms, account requirements, pricing, and which content is included. Recheck Fortnite’s platform support, Minecraft edition and Realm rules, Apex matchmaking behavior, VALORANT updates, Destiny 2 expansion access, Sea of Thieves seasons, and Halo Infinite’s current multiplayer details before making a purchase decision.

Also recheck Valheim’s Early Access status and Palworld’s release or platform information. The supplied research lists Valheim’s planned Early Access departure as September 9, 2026 and Palworld’s current listing as giving a July 9, 2026 release date; those are time-sensitive details, not permanent features.

Source note: Multiplayer features and platform claims in this guide are based on the official publisher, developer, platform-support, and storefront information supplied for the August 11, 2026 research cutoff. Availability and requirements can differ by region, edition, platform, and date.

Fortnite is the strongest general starting point because it supports cross-platform friend parties and offers several modes. Fall Guys and Rocket League are also good low-friction cross-platform choices. Confirm account, region, and platform settings before playing.

What are the best two-player online games here?

It Takes Two is the clearest choice because it was designed specifically for two players and includes a Friend’s Pass. Baldur’s Gate 3, Stardew Valley, Minecraft, and Sea of Thieves also work well for pairs that want a longer shared experience.

Which games are best for four friends?

Deep Rock Galactic is the strongest pure four-player co-op recommendation. Phasmophobia is ideal for four-player horror, while HELLDIVERS 2, Sea of Thieves, Destiny 2, and Valheim are good choices for groups that want missions or a longer-running world.

Do all of these games support cross-play?

No. Cross-play is specifically verified for several titles in the guide, including Fortnite, Minecraft Bedrock, Fall Guys, Rocket League, Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, Sea of Thieves, No Man’s Sky, and Palworld. It is not universal, and edition, platform, region, account, and matchmaking restrictions may apply.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus, or Xbox Game Pass to play online?

It depends on the game and platform. Nintendo Switch Online enables online play in compatible games, most PS4 and PS5 online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate includes online console multiplayer. Free-to-play games can have different rules, so check the exact title.

The Bottom Line

Choose by the kind of evening you want: Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League are the easiest mixed-group starters; Deep Rock Galactic and HELLDIVERS 2 deliver coordinated action; Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Sea of Thieves, and Valheim support long-term worlds; Phasmophobia and Lethal Company turn voice chat into horror comedy; and Baldur’s Gate 3 or It Takes Two provide a more focused story experience.

The best pick is the one that matches your group’s player count, platforms, available time, and tolerance for learning—not necessarily the one listed first.
