How to Play the Resident Evil Games in Order: Best, Release, and Chronological Paths

The best way to play Resident Evil is to use the modern remakes for the early classics, follow the principal story through Village, and finish with Requiem. Here are the recommended, release, and strict chronological orders.

For most newcomers, play the series in this order: Resident Evil (2002 remake/HD Remaster), Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake), Resident Evil 3 (2020 remake), Code: Veronica X, Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake), Resident Evil: Revelations, Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil: Revelations 2, Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Resident Evil Village, and finally Resident Evil Requiem.

That is the best first-playthrough route because it preserves major reveals while using the most accessible versions of the foundational games. A strict chronological replay begins with Resident Evil 0 and splits Resident Evil 3 around Resident Evil 2, but that is more complicated and is not the ideal introduction.

Which Resident Evil game should you play first?

Start with the 2002 remake of Resident Evil, preferably its HD Remaster, if you want the most complete introduction to the series. It establishes S.T.A.R.S., the Spencer Mansion, Umbrella, the mansion incident, the puzzle-focused structure, and the resource-management ideas that define classic Resident Evil.

If fixed-camera survival horror and older controls sound unappealing, start with the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 instead. It is the strongest modern entry point for many players, follows Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield during the Raccoon City outbreak, and presents the series through modern controls and over-the-shoulder gameplay.

The choice depends on what you want from “in order”:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Best first playthrough: Use modern remakes for the early games, then follow the principal story through Requiem.
  • Release order: Play the games in the order audiences originally received them to experience the franchise’s changing mechanics, tone, and storytelling.
  • Chronological order: Follow the fictional timeline, beginning with Resident Evil 0 and splitting Resident Evil 3 around Resident Evil 2.

Freshness note: This guide treats Resident Evil Requiem as the newest mainline game as of August 11, 2026. Capcom released the ninth main installment on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Game editions, physical stock, platforms, and DLC bundles can change, so verify the current listing for your region before buying.

If you want the earliest two stories together, the Resident Evil Origins Collection is a practical starting purchase because it groups Resident Evil 0 with the HD version of the 2002 first-game remake. Platform, region, seller, and stock availability vary.

The recommended first-playthrough order

This route uses the best modern version where one exists, while keeping important non-numbered games that add significant story context. It is not a demand to play every port or both the original and remake of each game.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Resident Evil — 2002 remake or HD Remaster

The remake preserves the original mansion setting, S.T.A.R.S. cast, Umbrella mystery, puzzles, fixed-camera presentation, and careful ammunition and healing management while making the experience considerably more approachable than the 1996 release.

Play this before Resident Evil 0 if you are new to the franchise. Resident Evil 0 is technically earlier in the story, but its partner-switching and inventory systems are less representative of the series and it works better once you understand the first game’s world.

  2. Resident Evil 2 — 2019 remake

The 2019 remake is the best modern starting point if you want updated controls and polished survival horror. Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield investigate Raccoon City during the outbreak, with overlapping campaigns and scenarios that show different parts of the same disaster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Play one campaign first, then treat the other as a second perspective rather than trying to construct a perfect scene-by-scene chronology. The remake is a reinterpretation of the 1998 game, not a reason to erase the original from release-history discussions.

If modern controls matter more than original-release history, choose the Resident Evil 2 remake. Check the platform and edition carefully, since physical availability and included content can differ.

  3. Resident Evil 3 — 2020 remake

Play Resident Evil 3 after completing Resident Evil 2. The opening portion of RE3 takes place before and during the events of RE2, but stopping midway through the game is awkward for a first playthrough. Completing RE2 first gives you a smoother experience and avoids interrupting its character and location arcs.

The 2020 remake follows Jill Valentine as she attempts to escape Raccoon City while being pursued by the Nemesis. It is shorter and more action-focused than RE2, but it completes the outbreak-era storyline and explains what happens to the city.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Resident Evil: Code: Veronica X

Code: Veronica is not numbered, but it is important to the Redfield family story and the continuing Umbrella plot. Claire is still dealing with the consequences of Raccoon City, and Chris Redfield returns to the central narrative.

This is an essential lore game but an optional first-playthrough game. Its original presentation and modern hardware availability are less convenient than the recent remakes. Skip it temporarily only if you need to stay on the most accessible modern path; do not skip it if Chris, Claire, Umbrella, and the series’ older conspiracies are central to your interest.

  5. Resident Evil 4 — 2023 remake

The 2023 remake follows Leon on a mission to rescue the U.S. president’s daughter from a rural European cult. It moves the series toward over-the-shoulder action while retaining exploration, puzzles, equipment management, and the pressure of limited resources.

Play it after Code: Veronica if you are following the story-rich route. It works even if you skipped that game, but the preceding entries give more weight to Leon’s role and the broader bioterrorism conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Resident Evil 4 remake is the recommended modern version for most players. If you are comparing editions, distinguish the base game from Gold Editions or DLC bundles; do not assume that every physical or digital listing includes the same extras.

The original 2005 Resident Evil 4 remains worth playing for historical context because it influenced the direction of third-person action games and has different pacing, encounters, and design choices. It is not necessary before the remake. Play it afterward, or use it as part of a complete release-order run.

  6. Resident Evil: Revelations

Revelations takes place after Resident Evil 4 and before Resident Evil 5. Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield are central, and the ship-based setting returns some confined exploration and investigation to a series that was becoming increasingly action-oriented.

It is optional if you only want the numbered games, but it is a useful bridge into the bioterrorism organizations and Jill’s story. Its episodic structure also makes it a relatively manageable side trip before the larger action of RE5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  7. Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 5 follows Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar in Africa. It is designed around cooperative play and is much more action-heavy than the mansion, police-station, and ship-based games, but its story is important to the Umbrella, Wesker, and bioterrorism arcs.

Play the main campaign before the Lost in Nightmares story expansion for the simplest first experience. On a lore-focused replay, you can place that flashback material immediately before the relevant part of the campaign. The expansion is not required to understand the basic route, but it adds important context to Chris and Jill.

  8. Resident Evil: Revelations 2

Revelations 2 returns to Claire Redfield and gives Barry Burton’s daughter, Moira, a major role. It takes place after Resident Evil 5 and before Resident Evil 6.

The episodic format and dual-character gameplay make it optional for a streamlined numbered-game run. It is nevertheless valuable if you want the continuing stories of Claire and Barry, or if you prefer a smaller, more character-focused entry between the large-scale events of RE5 and RE6.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  9. Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil 6 contains four interconnected campaigns involving Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield, Jake Muller, and Ada Wong. Its global bioterrorism story is important to the wider series even though its action-heavy design is very different from classic survival horror.

Use the in-game campaign order for a first playthrough. The campaigns overlap and reveal information from different viewpoints, so a strict chronological rearrangement is possible but unnecessary. The intended order generally handles the major reveals more effectively.

  10. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil 7 begins Ethan Winters’ storyline and returns the franchise to a more intimate survival-horror format. Its first-person perspective, Louisiana setting, Baker family, and mold-related threat establish the storyline that continues in Village.

Complete the main campaign before playing the story expansions Not a Hero and End of Zoe. They are designed as post-campaign material and are best treated as additional chapters rather than prerequisites for understanding the opening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  11. Resident Evil Village

Village is a direct sequel to Resident Evil 7 and continues Ethan Winters’ story. It combines first-person survival horror with larger combat encounters, broader exploration, and fairy-tale-inspired locations.

Finish the base game before playing Shadows of Rose. The expansion takes place after the main story and is most meaningful once you know what happened to Ethan, his family, and the village.

  12. Resident Evil Requiem

Resident Evil Requiem is the latest mainline entry as of August 11, 2026. It returns to Raccoon City nearly three decades after the city’s destruction and follows FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft alongside Leon S. Kennedy. Grace is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, a character from Resident Evil Outbreak, which gives that previously optional side series renewed relevance.

Requiem supports both first-person and third-person perspectives and is positioned as a bridge between classic survival horror and modern action. Play it last in a release-aware or chronological mainline run so that its setting and character connections have the greatest context.

  1. Resident Evil 0
  2. Resident Evil, preferably the 2002 remake or HD Remaster
  3. The opening section of Resident Evil 3, optionally
  4. Resident Evil 2, preferably the 2019 remake
  5. The remaining section of Resident Evil 3, preferably the 2020 remake
  6. Resident Evil: Code: Veronica X
  7. Resident Evil 4, preferably the 2023 remake
  8. Resident Evil: Revelations
  9. Resident Evil 5
  10. Resident Evil: Revelations 2
  11. Resident Evil 6
  12. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
  13. Resident Evil Village
  14. Resident Evil Requiem

The difficult part is Resident Evil 3. Its story begins before Resident Evil 2, overlaps with it, and then continues afterward. A genuinely chronological run therefore requires you to stop RE3, play RE2, and return to RE3. That is an interesting replay experiment, not a worthwhile complication for a first-time player.

Resident Evil 0 is the chronological starting point, but it is not necessarily the best introduction. Its partner-switching system means that two characters share a campaign while items must be managed across the environment rather than through a conventional item box. Starting with the 2002 remake usually teaches the classic formula more clearly.

Resident Evil release order

Release order shows how Capcom changed the series from fixed-camera survival horror to over-the-shoulder action, then to first-person horror and modern hybrid design. The list below is the useful story-bearing release spine. It includes the original versions and major remakes without requiring you to play duplicate campaigns in one run.

Release year Game or version Why it matters
1996 Resident Evil The original mansion survival-horror game.
1998 Resident Evil 2 Expands the setting to Raccoon City and introduces Leon and Claire.
1999 Resident Evil 3: Nemesis Continues the Raccoon City disaster through Jill’s escape.
2000 Resident Evil: Code: Veronica Develops Claire, Chris, and the Redfield family storyline.
2002 Resident Evil remake Modernizes the first game while retaining its classic structure.
2002 Resident Evil 0 A prequel centered on Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen.
2003 Resident Evil Outbreak and later File #2 Side stories about ordinary survivors during the Raccoon City disaster.
2005 Resident Evil 4 Moves the series decisively toward over-the-shoulder action.
2009 Resident Evil 5 Expands the action formula and the Chris-Wesker conflict.
2012 Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil 6 One returns to confined investigation; the other presents a global multi-campaign story.
2015 Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Continues Claire and Barry’s family-related stories.
2017 Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Introduces Ethan Winters and a first-person survival-horror perspective.
2019 Resident Evil 2 remake Reimagines the Raccoon City classic with modern controls and presentation.
2020 Resident Evil 3 remake Modernizes Jill’s escape from Raccoon City.
2021 Resident Evil Village Continues Ethan’s story with a larger, more action-oriented structure.
2023 Resident Evil 4 remake Reinterprets the influential 2005 action-horror game.
2026 Resident Evil Requiem The ninth main installment and the newest mainline game as of August 11, 2026.

For a pure historical run, play the original games rather than replacing them with remakes. For a practical release-aware run, use the newer remakes where available: the 2002 remake for the first game, the 2019 version of RE2, the 2020 version of RE3, and the 2023 version of RE4. Remakes modernize earlier stories, but they do not make every original release obsolete.

Where the other Resident Evil games fit

Not every Resident Evil release belongs in the principal sequence. These games fit around it as optional material:

  • Resident Evil Survivor: A first-person spin-off connected to the aftermath of Raccoon City. It is optional and is not needed for the numbered-game plot.
  • Resident Evil Outbreak and Outbreak File #2: Side stories following ordinary survivors during the Raccoon City disaster. They are not required for the core story, although Requiem makes the Ashcroft family connection more relevant because Grace Ashcroft is Alyssa Ashcroft’s daughter.
  • Umbrella Chronicles and The Darkside Chronicles: Rail-shooter retellings and expansions of earlier incidents. They can provide supplemental lore, but they should not replace the original games or remakes on a first run.
  • Operation Raccoon City, Resistance, Umbrella Corps, and The Mercenaries 3D: Primarily optional action, competitive, or multiplayer-oriented entries. They are not required to follow the principal narrative.
  • Resident Evil Gaiden: A handheld spin-off that is not needed for a modern core-series playthrough.

Five good ways to start

Best modern starting point: Resident Evil 2 remake

Choose the 2019 remake if you want the most immediately approachable blend of exploration, puzzles, atmosphere, combat, and modern controls. You can later return to the 2002 remake for the older survival-horror style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best lore-complete starting point: Resident Evil remake

Choose the 2002 remake first if you want the foundation for Umbrella, S.T.A.R.S., Chris, Jill, and the mansion incident. Continue with the RE2 remake and RE3 remake before moving into the Redfield and Leon storylines.

Best chronological starting point: Resident Evil 0

Choose RE0 only if fictional chronology matters more to you than learning the series through its most representative early game. It is the first major event in the sequence, but its inventory and partner mechanics can make it a demanding introduction.

Best short modern path: RE2 remake → RE4 remake → RE7 → Village → Requiem

This route samples the modern versions of the series’ most important styles: third-person survival horror, third-person action horror, first-person survival horror, and the newer hybrid approach. It skips much of the Redfield, Umbrella, and global bioterrorism history, so it is a compact introduction rather than a lore-complete run.

Best classic-focused path

Play the original Resident Evil, original Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Code: Veronica, and original Resident Evil 4. This route shows the franchise’s original progression more clearly than a remake-only run, but access and control preferences vary considerably by platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you play the original games before the remakes?

No. For a first playthrough, the modern remakes are usually the better choice where they exist. They preserve the central settings and characters while updating controls, visual presentation, encounter design, and quality-of-life features.

Play the originals first only if you specifically want to study survival-horror history, compare how Capcom reinterpreted each story, or experience the games as originally released. Do not alternate versions in the middle of the story. Finish one version, then revisit its predecessor or remake afterward so the differences are easier to appreciate.

Recommended DLC order

  • Resident Evil 5: Lost in Nightmares: After the main RE5 campaign for the simplest first run; immediately before its related flashback material on a lore-focused replay.
  • Resident Evil 7: Not a Hero and End of Zoe: After the RE7 main campaign.
  • Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose: After completing the base game.

DLC availability depends on the version and edition you purchase. A listing described as a base game may not include a Gold Edition, expansion pass, or story expansion.

Bottom line

For a first introduction, begin with the 2002 Resident Evil remake if you want the complete foundation, or the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake if you want the most accessible modern entry. Continue through RE3, Code: Veronica, RE4, Revelations, RE5, Revelations 2, RE6, RE7, and Village before finishing with Resident Evil Requiem. Save Resident Evil 0 and the split RE3 chronology for a replay rather than making your first run harder than it needs to be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to play Resident Evil 0 first?

No. Resident Evil 0 is first chronologically, but most newcomers should play the 2002 remake of Resident Evil first. RE0 can then be played as an optional prequel or used as the opening game on a chronological replay.

Do I need to play the original Resident Evil games before the remakes?

No. The 2002, 2019, 2020, and 2023 remakes are suitable first versions of their respective stories. Play the originals afterward if you want historical context or a direct comparison.

Is Code: Veronica required?

It is optional for a streamlined modern run, but important for the Redfield family, Claire, Chris, and Umbrella storylines. Players pursuing the most complete lore path should include Code: Veronica X after Resident Evil 3.

Where does Resident Evil Requiem belong?

As of August 11, 2026, Requiem is the newest mainline game. Play it after Village in either the recommended or chronological order. It takes place nearly 30 years after Raccoon City’s destruction and features Grace Ashcroft and Leon S. Kennedy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Best overall order: Resident Evil remake → Resident Evil 2 remake → Resident Evil 3 remake → Code: Veronica X → Resident Evil 4 remake → Revelations → Resident Evil 5 → Revelations 2 → Resident Evil 6 → Resident Evil 7 → Village → Requiem. Use Resident Evil 0 first only for a strict chronological run, and do not split RE3 around RE2 unless you are replaying the series.
