Android games do not all handle gamepads the same way: support can be complete, limited to gameplay, tied to a particular mode, or dependent on an in-game setting. The examples below are drawn from Android Authority’s April 30, 2025 recommendations, not a verified ranking or catalog from 2023. Check the specific game listing and device/controller compatibility before downloading or buying.
What “controller support” means on Android
A game may accept a physical controller during play but still require touch for menus, account setup, or other screens. Some titles also require an input option to be enabled, and compatibility can differ by controller, Android device, and game mode. Google’s Android game controller documentation describes how developers implement and test controller input, and notes that Google Play can label controller-supported games. That platform label is useful, but it is not a guarantee that every controller works in every situation.
Before choosing a game, check its Google Play listing, look in its settings for controller or input options, and consult recent reports for your particular phone and controller. Treat the titles below as reported examples rather than a comprehensive, current compatibility certification.
Android games reported with controller support
Android Authority’s April 30, 2025 article names these games as controller-friendly examples. The list is organized by the kind of play they offer; it is not a controlled test, a ranking of all 35 games in the TechBloat headline, or proof that every title remains available or works identically on every device.

Action, adventure, and exploration
- Stardew Valley — a farming and life-simulation game with exploration and combat.
- Dead Cells — fast-paced action-platforming with repeated runs.
- Crashlands — an adventure with crafting, exploration, and combat.
- Alien: Isolation — a survival-horror game built around stealth and evasion.
- Vampire Survivors — an action game focused on surviving waves of enemies.
- Terraria — a 2D sandbox adventure with crafting, building, and combat.
Fighting and beat ’em ups
- TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge — a side-scrolling beat ’em up.
- Streets of Rage 4 — a modern entry in the side-scrolling beat ’em up series.
Classic and ported games
- Castlevania: Symphony of the Night — a classic exploration-focused action game.
- SEGA ports — Android Authority also points to games from SEGA’s catalog; check each individual listing, since “SEGA ports” is not one game or a single compatibility guarantee.
Shooter and racing options
The cited examples also include Call of Duty: Mobile, but controller behavior may vary by mode and settings. Confirm current game rules and support in the mode you intend to play. Racing is a useful genre to search for if you prefer analog steering, but the cited article’s named examples do not establish a specific racing title here.
Pick a play route: native, subscription, cloud, or streaming
- Native Android games: Download the Android version and check its store listing and input behavior. Availability, controller support, and device requirements can change.
- Subscription catalogs: Some premium games may appear in services such as Google Play Pass, but catalog membership changes. Confirm the current catalog in your region before subscribing for a particular game.
- Cloud gaming: Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce Now are distinct from installing a native Android game: the game runs remotely and is streamed to your device. Check current regional access, service and subscription requirements, supported devices, and network conditions.
- Local remote play: Local streaming options can send a game from another device on your network to an Android screen. This is not the same as native Android availability; check the streaming app and host-device requirements.
Connect a controller to an Android phone
Pair a Bluetooth controller
- Put the controller into its Bluetooth pairing mode. For Xbox Wireless Controllers, confirm that your model supports Bluetooth; not every Xbox controller generation has the same connectivity.
- On Android, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device (the exact label can vary by phone), then select the controller when it appears.
- Open the game and try its menus and gameplay. If input does not work, check the game’s settings for a controller-input option and consult compatibility reports for the exact controller and phone.

Use a wired controller
A wired setup may need a USB-C OTG adapter, and the phone must support OTG. Confirm the controller’s connector and the phone’s OTG capability before buying an adapter; a physical connection by itself does not ensure that a game recognizes the controller.
Choose a phone-holder format
A separate controller with a clip or mount holds the phone above the gamepad; a telescopic controller grips the phone between its controls. These are different form factors, so check fit, connection type, and compatibility with your phone and chosen game. Neither format adds controller support to a game that lacks it.

Why the “2023” title needs a date caveat
The TechBloat page titled “35 Best Android Games With Controller Support In 2023” displays a publication date of May 19, 2026. That makes it a later article with a historical headline, not evidence that its recommendations or game availability were checked in 2023. Android Authority’s named examples are from April 30, 2025, while Google’s controller documentation was last updated February 26, 2026 UTC. Those dates do not establish a complete, universally current list of 35 games.

- Verify the controller’s connection type and compatibility with your phone.
- Look for an in-game controller or input setting if buttons are not responding.
- For cloud play or subscriptions, verify current regional, device, plan, and network requirements.
