Fix 1: Decide whether the Banshee hardware still exists
Before downloading or copying anything, identify whether this computer still uses a 3Dfx Voodoo Banshee card.
Check Device Manager
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Look for a Voodoo Banshee or another 3Dfx adapter.
- Expand Other devices and look for an unknown display controller if the driver is missing.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Open the General and Driver tabs.
If the machine has a modern NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel adapter, the old Banshee driver is probably no longer needed. If the computer is a retro system or virtual machine configured for Banshee-era software, continue with the driver-repair path below.
Do not install a 3Dfx DLL merely because its filename appears in an error. The correct fix depends on whether the hardware and its control panel are still required.
Fix 2: Remove the obsolete Banshee startup entry
This is the most likely solution on Windows 10 and Windows 11, especially when the error appears during startup and the computer otherwise works normally.
Disable it through Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- If necessary, select More details.
- Open the Startup apps tab.
- Look for an entry named VoodooBanshee, 3Dfx, or a similarly named legacy item.
- Select it.
- Click Disable.
- Restart Windows.
On older Windows versions, the equivalent path was:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
msconfig. - Press Enter.
- Open the Startup tab.
- Clear the checkbox for VoodooBanshee.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart.
If the error disappears after restarting, the DLL itself was not the real problem. Windows was attempting to run a leftover command for hardware that was no longer installed.
Search the registry only after backing it up
If the startup item is not shown in Task Manager or msconfig, it may remain in a Run key.

- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- In Registry Editor, select File > Export.
- Choose All under Export range.
- Save the backup somewhere easy to find.
- Press Ctrl + F.
- Search for
3dfxVBps.dll. - Search again for
VoodooBanshee. - Check each result before changing it.

Older Windows 9x systems may also use RunOnce, RunServices, or Startup folders.
Delete or disable only the entry that clearly launches the obsolete Banshee command. Do not delete unrelated registry values. Restart and confirm that the message no longer appears.

If the error continues, search Startup folders, scheduled tasks, and third-party startup managers for 3dfx, VoodooBanshee, and 3dfxVBps.dll.
Fix 3: Reinstall the complete Banshee driver package
Use this fix only if the computer still uses a Voodoo Banshee or a compatible retro environment that needs the original driver stack.

A standalone DLL is not enough. The Banshee package can also contain display drivers, VXD or DRV files, Glide components, an INF file, and control-panel components. Mixing one DLL from a different release can leave the installation broken.
The surviving Banshee packages are archival software rather than current vendor-supported downloads. Choose a package specifically matching the guest operating system and hardware. Windows 95/98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 packages are not automatically interchangeable.
Prepare the system
- Confirm the exact guest operating system.
- Confirm that the Banshee card is installed or correctly emulated.
- Disconnect the computer from unnecessary networks if working with an isolated legacy system.
- Back up important files.
- Remove the incomplete Banshee installation through Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs on Windows 9x, or through the appropriate installed-programs list on a later system.
- Restart when prompted.
Do not mix Windows 9x files with NT-based driver files. Do not place a Windows 9x DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 on a modern installation and expect the old driver to work.
Install the matching package
- Extract the complete driver archive to a temporary folder.
- Read any included installation instructions.
- Run the package installer if one is provided.
- If the package uses an INF file, open Device Manager.
- Right-click the Banshee adapter.
- Select Update Driver or Install Driver.
- Choose the option to browse for the driver.
- Select the folder containing the matching
Banshee.inf. - Continue through the hardware prompts.
- Restart the computer.
After restarting, check Device Manager for an error icon. Open the Banshee control panel if available and confirm that its settings page opens without a missing-DLL message.

Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a historical driver component, but the filename alone does not prove that a detected copy is safe. No current security verdict should be assumed merely because the file once belonged to 3Dfx.
Review Protection history
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand any event involving
3dfxvbps.dll. - Note the detection name, original path, and action taken.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The computer genuinely uses a Banshee-era driver.
- The original path matches the trusted driver installation.
- The file came from the complete matching package.
- Its metadata or hash can be compared with that package.
- The antivirus detection has been reviewed carefully.
If the machine has no 3Dfx hardware, do not restore the file simply to silence the error. Remove the stale startup reference instead.

Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file may cause Defender to detect it again unless it is separately allowed. Do not create an exclusion for an unverified DLL.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only if Windows itself is damaged
3dfxvbps.dll is a third-party driver file. It is not expected to be restored by System File Checker or Windows component repair. These commands are appropriate when Windows has additional problems, such as broken built-in apps, failed updates, or other protected system files.
Run DISM first
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
A successful result reports that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, repair the Windows installation using an appropriate Microsoft source before continuing.
Run SFC second
Open an elevated terminal again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:

A clean SFC result does not prove that 3dfxvbps.dll exists or belongs on the computer. If the startup error remains, return to the startup-entry investigation.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without identifying which program requests the file usually wastes time. Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after uninstalling a driver or changing system software.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the list.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore does not replace a known-matching Banshee driver package. Use it only when a suitable restore point exists and you understand which applications or drivers may be rolled back.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file
The known startup usage is:
rundll32.exe 3dfxVBps.dll,BansheeLoadSettings
That is not the same as COM registration.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM registration exports such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified reason to treat 3dfxvbps.dll as a self-registering COM DLL. Running this command is therefore not a repair:
regsvr32 3dfxvbps.dll
It may produce a module, entry-point, or initialization error without restoring any part of the Banshee driver stack.

Avoid random DLL downloads and manual System32 copying
Do not download 3dfxvbps.dll from a random DLL site and copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
That approach can fail because:
- The file may contain malware.
- The revision may not match the driver.
- The package may target a different Windows generation.
- The DLL may have missing dependencies.
- A 32-bit legacy file does not become a compatible modern driver by being copied into a system folder.
- The stale startup reference remains after the copy.
The safe sources are the original installation media, a verified archival package matching the exact Banshee hardware and operating system, or a trusted backup from that same installation. If the card is gone, do not restore the file at all.
What if the error appears inside a game?
3dfxvbps.dll is associated with the Banshee driver control panel, not a known modern game runtime. If the message appears only when launching one program:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut and Target fields.
- Note the program path.
- Check whether the DLL request comes from that program’s installation folder or from Windows startup.
- Uninstall the program through Settings > Apps > Installed apps if it installed legacy graphics software.
- Restart.
- Reinstall only from the program’s original installer if the application truly requires Banshee support.
Do not assume that Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will provide this file. They normally do not.

The historical filename is legitimate, but an individual copy is not automatically safe. Verify its origin, metadata, hash, driver context, and antivirus detection before restoring it.
