1. Use a spyglass for a temporary zoom
The spyglass is Minecraft’s built-in zoom tool in Java and Bedrock. Put it on your hotbar, select it, then use your normal Use Item control. It adds a scoped overlay for inspecting distant terrain, structures, or mobs. Mojang describes the spyglass as making faraway things larger and says its view reduces the configured field of view to one-tenth. Mojang’s spyglass guide explains how to craft one using two copper ingots and one amethyst shard.
This is the most dependable no-install choice when you want to inspect something without changing your normal view. Unlike a zoom hotkey, it is an in-game item and the scoped overlay remains part of the experience.
2. Lower the FOV for a closer overall view
Open the video settings and move the FOV slider lower. This changes the view immediately and does not require a spyglass or other item. It is a broad view adjustment, not a momentary zoom: your normal perspective stays narrower until you raise the setting again.

Mojang’s 2022 article gives default FOV values of 70° for Java Edition and 60° for Bedrock Edition, and notes that players can change them. These are defaults, not edition limits. If you want to return to the usual view, restore the slider to its prior value or use the edition’s default setting.
3. Add a zoom hotkey in Java Edition
Java players can install a third-party zoom mod for hotkey-style use and configurable behavior. CurseForge lists options including Just Zoom and Zoomify. Just Zoom and Zoomify are mods, not vanilla Minecraft features.

- Before installing, check that the mod supports your Minecraft version and mod loader.
- Review compatibility with your other client mods.
- After installation, check its key-binding settings; another mod or control may already use the same key.
Choose this route if you specifically want a quick zoom control rather than an item or a permanently narrower FOV. Mod support can change across game versions, so confirm the current listing before downloading.
4. Treat Bedrock add-ons as platform-specific
Community add-ons may provide camera zoom, but availability and compatibility are not established across Windows, consoles, and mobile devices. Before installing one, check its listing for your exact platform and Minecraft version, along with any applicable marketplace or platform rules. If you want a reliable option without that compatibility check, use the built-in spyglass instead.

If a spyglass does not seem to zoom
First check that you have selected the spyglass and used the normal Use Item control, then confirm that your current settings and game version are correct. Mojang’s issue tracker records an interaction between spyglass zoom and FOV Effects in Java snapshot 24w33a, marked fixed in snapshot 24w34a.
