Futurism reported that Joshua Jahn played Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam in the early morning before the September 2025 attack at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas. The account was based on a Steam screenshot obtained by journalist Ken Klippenstein; the reporting does not establish that gaming or 4chan use caused the attack.
What Futurism reported about Jahn’s Steam activity
In a September 28, 2025 article, Sharon Adarlo of Futurism said Jahn was playing the first-person shooters Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam during the early morning before the attack. Futurism attributed the screenshot to investigative journalist Ken Klippenstein.

Futurism also relayed Klippenstein’s reporting that Jahn had accumulated more than 17,000 hours on Steam. That total is an attributed figure, not a Steam account record independently reviewed for this article.
What the reporting says about the attack
Futurism reported that two immigrant detainees were killed, another person was injured, and Jahn died at the scene. The article said none of the victims were ICE agents. These details are attributed to Futurism’s account; they were not independently checked against an official incident record here.

What is known—and not known—about motive
Futurism described Jahn as a frequent 4chan user, citing Klippenstein’s reporting and accounts attributed to Jahn’s friends. That online activity is background reported by the article; it is not evidence that 4chan directed or caused the attack.
The article said officials interpreted notes as indicating that Jahn intended to target ICE. It also reported that an unused bullet was marked “Anti-ICE,” while friends viewed the marking as potentially ironic or nihilistic. Futurism relayed Jahn’s brother’s statement to NBC News that “he [Jahn] didn’t have strong feelings about ICE.” Read together, those accounts do not establish a simple or definitive motive.

Did video games or 4chan cause the attack?
The reporting does not show that they did. A record of reported game activity and online use establishes neither a motive nor a causal link to violence. Futurism notes that studies have failed to establish a causal link between gaming and violent aggression; the details about Jahn’s gaming should therefore be treated as reported context, not an explanation for the attack.
The article’s featured Steam Deck image is illustrative. It does not establish that Jahn owned or used a Steam Deck or any other specific gaming hardware.
