England youth players are selected into age-group squads for particular camps, international windows and competitions; there is no single permanent roster or publicly published selection formula covering every team. Coaches also appoint captains within their teams, but the Football Association (FA) has not set out a universal public policy for how that decision is made.
How England youth squads are organized
England’s youth pathway is divided by age group, with separate men’s and women’s teams and season-specific coaching and competition plans. For the men’s 2026–27 season, the FA announced coaching line-ups covering MU15 to MU21. Competition schedules differ by age group: the MU20s, for example, compete in the U20 Euro Elite League, while the MU17 and MU19 teams prepare for UEFA qualifying campaigns. These arrangements are specific to that season and can change. The FA’s 2026–27 coaching announcement is the current reference for that men’s structure.

The FA’s youth-team hub covers men’s and women’s teams and publishes news, fixtures, results and features. Squad announcements are tied to a particular window or competition, not an all-purpose standing roster. A March 2026 announcement, for instance, named squads for MU17, MU18, MU19 and MU20 in connection with their upcoming fixtures. Such announcements show the players selected for that occasion, sometimes grouped by position and club, and may note withdrawals or replacements. The March 2026 announcement is one example of how selections are communicated.
How do you get selected for an England youth football team?
Players must come to the attention of the relevant age-group pathway, but the public sources do not provide a complete account of every route or a scoring rubric that explains how every final squad is chosen. Squad lists identify who was selected; they do not disclose all the scouting observations, comparisons, eligibility checks or club discussions that may inform a decision. That is a limit of what the FA has published in the sources cited here, not evidence that coaches use no internal criteria.

The FA has described a specific identification route for girls through its Discover My Talent programme. The programme can refer female players from grassroots clubs, schools, community environments and Emerging Talent Centres for consideration, and aims to identify players regardless of geographical location, background or community. Players identified through the programme could be considered for England U15–U17 squads. This is an example within the girls’ pathway; it does not establish that the same programme or referral process applies to every age group or to boys’ teams.
In an April 2023 report, the FA said 356 players had been identified as talents of interest and 75 referred players were then part of a group being considered for England U15–U17 squad selection. Those are dated programme figures, not current totals. See the FA’s Discover My Talent report for the original context.

Who chooses the captain of an England youth team?
Published examples show captains being named or serving repeatedly, but the sources do not establish a single rule for how England youth captains are chosen. They do not support claims that appointments are decided by seniority, number of caps, a team vote, personality tests or one fixed leadership framework.
FA player profile material says Taylor Harwood-Bellis represented and often captained England at MU16, MU17, MU19 and MU21 level. He also captained the MU21s when they won the 2023 UEFA U21 EURO. This illustrates that a player may captain at multiple age groups; it does not explain the coaches’ selection criteria. The FA’s Harwood-Bellis profile provides that career example.

In a 2025 tournament feature, England MU17 defender Malachi Hardy described Seth Ridgeon as someone who had been the team’s captain “quite a bit.” That supports the narrower point that Ridgeon had captained that side repeatedly, not a broader claim about official policy. The FA feature is a player interview rather than a policy statement.

For the latest selections, fixtures and results, use the FA’s youth-team hub. Squad announcements apply to the window or competition they name, so an older list should not be treated as the current squad. Coaching appointments and competition plans are seasonal too; the September 2026 announcement describes the men’s 2026–27 structure, not a permanent arrangement.
