If you still own a Wii U, it can play physical Wii U games and compatible Wii titles, revisit games already in your digital library, and run compatible fitness software. Its GamePad can also provide a second screen for supported games and web browsing. New eShop purchases have ended, and Wii U online play ended in 2024, so the best uses depend on the games and accessories you already have.
What can you do with an old Wii U?
These four uses rely on the console’s existing hardware and software rather than new eShop purchases or online multiplayer. Which ones make sense depends on whether you have discs, an account with purchased games, a GamePad, Wii controllers, or compatible fitness equipment.
| Use | Works offline? | What you need | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play physical games | Usually, for the core game; individual features vary | A Wii U disc, or a compatible Wii disc and its required controller | Check the exact title’s controller and online requirements |
| Use the GamePad as a second screen | For supported games, often; browser use requires internet | GamePad and a game with GamePad features, or an internet connection for browsing | GamePad functions differ by game |
| Replay owned digital games | Downloaded games generally do; updates and redownloads require online access | A Wii U account with prior purchases and enough console or USB storage | Nintendo says redownloads and updates will continue for the foreseeable future, not permanently |
| Play fitness or family software | Typically, for the core game | The specific game and any required accessory, such as a Balance Board | Check the individual game’s equipment requirements |
1. Play Wii U games on disc—and compatible Wii games
A Wii U can still play physical Wii U software, making your existing disc collection a straightforward reason to keep the console. It also supports compatible Wii software. Nintendo’s Wii U Operations Manual documents the console and Wii software, but compatibility and controller needs are title-specific.
Before buying a used disc or setting up an old game, check its packaging or instructions for the required controllers and features. A game may launch and play locally even though an online mode or service-dependent feature no longer works.

- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
2. Make the GamePad a second screen
Some Wii U games use the GamePad for maps, inventory, alternate views, or other title-specific features. The exact use varies: consult the manual or in-game instructions for the game you want to play rather than assuming every title uses the touchscreen in the same way.
The GamePad also works alongside the TV in the Wii U Internet Browser. Nintendo describes showing images and video on the TV while you browse on the GamePad. The browser needs an internet connection; Nintendo’s documentation does not establish reliable compatibility with today’s websites or streaming services.

- The Wii U GamePad breaks down barriers between you and your entertainment with a 6.2" 16:9 LCD touch screen, motion control system, front-facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, rumble feature
- Console works with most games from the original Wii console, as well as the Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus, Nunchuk controllers, Balance Board and many other Wii accessories, so you can continue to enjoy your favorite Wii features
- Play using a Wii Remote controller, the Wii U GamePad controller or a Wii U Pro Controller.
- Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.
3. Revisit digital games you already own
Nintendo ended Wii U eShop purchases and downloads of new free content, including demos, on March 27, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific. That does not mean every previously purchased game disappeared: Nintendo says owners can still redownload games and DLC they previously bought, and can still download software updates, for the foreseeable future. That wording is not a guarantee of permanent availability. See Nintendo’s Wii U & Nintendo 3DS eShop Discontinuation Q&A for the North American support information.
If the console needs more room, Wii U supports USB external storage. Nintendo’s external storage setup instructions explain how to connect and configure a device. After formatting, USB storage becomes the default location for most new downloads.

Important: Formatting erases all data already on the USB device, and Nintendo warns that the deleted data cannot be recovered. Copy or remove anything you need before formatting. Choose storage based on Nintendo’s compatibility guidance and verify the specific device before buying; do not assume every generic drive will work.
4. Turn it into a fitness or family-game console
Compatible Wii software gives the Wii U another role in a living room or workout space. For example, Wii Fit may be an option if you have the game and its required Balance Board. The accessory list is not universal across fitness games, so check the instructions for the exact title and confirm that any used equipment is compatible before purchasing it.

This use can be a good fit if the console, game, and accessories are already on hand: it does not depend on online multiplayer or new eShop sales.

You can launch the Internet Browser from the HOME menu. Nintendo says it can be opened while another application is running, with the eShop as an exception. The Internet Browser for Wii U overview describes using the TV and GamePad together and notes that internet access is required.

That does not make the Wii U a dependable modern streaming box. Current website, video-format, and streaming-service compatibility is not established by Nintendo’s browser documentation, so treat web browsing as a bonus rather than a reason to rely on it for today’s media services.
What no longer works online?
Nintendo ended Wii U online play and other online communication functionality on April 8, 2024. Do not plan on online multiplayer as a current use. This is separate from the eShop change: Nintendo’s current support information says previously purchased games and DLC can still be redownloaded and software updates can still be downloaded for the foreseeable future.
Quick Recap
How to choose the right use
- Have Wii U discs? Start with those; check each game’s controller and online requirements.
- Own Wii games or fitness accessories? Verify compatibility and the game’s required equipment before setup.
- Have digital purchases? Connect to the internet if you need to redownload them or retrieve updates.
- Need more space? Use compatible USB storage only after protecting any files already on the device, because formatting deletes them.
- Want a browser or streaming device? The browser can access the internet, but current site and streaming support should not be assumed.
