Laptop Mag reported four gaming laptops priced from $499 to $1,499 on November 12, 2024, with advertised savings of $200 to $600. The strongest budget pick was the HP Victus, the best-balanced option was the HP Omen 16, and the Asus ROG Strix G16 offered the most performance. Check Walmart’s current gaming-laptop listings for live prices, stock, sellers and configurations before buying.
The original roundup’s headline used “up to $600” because that was the largest advertised saving—not because every laptop was discounted by $600. More importantly, the source contained three incorrect deal-card headings: descriptions labeled as Lenovo IdeaPad 1i, Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 3 and HP Laptop 14 actually described an HP Omen 16, Asus ROG Strix G16 and MSI Katana. The corrected identities below follow the specifications and descriptions reported in the article.

That combination made it the clearest entry-level choice. An RTX 4050 laptop is suited to 1080p gaming at sensible medium-to-high settings, while 16GB RAM avoids the most common memory compromise in inexpensive gaming laptops. The 144Hz panel is particularly useful for esports and lighter games, although demanding modern titles may not approach 144 frames per second at high settings.
The main compromises were the RTX 4050’s limited headroom and the 512GB drive. Large modern games can consume much of that capacity, so buyers should check whether a current equivalent has a replaceable SSD or a second M.2 slot. GPU performance also depends on wattage, cooling and manufacturer tuning; “RTX 4050” alone does not guarantee identical results across laptops.
Choose this class of laptop if: you want the lowest reasonable price for 1080p gaming, and you value 16GB RAM more than a premium chassis or high-resolution screen.
2. HP Omen 16: best balanced higher-end option
The HP Omen 16 was listed at $1,299, advertised as $300 off. The reported hardware included a Core i7-14700HX, RTX 4060, 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD. Its 16.1-inch 2560×1440 display offered a 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time.
The RTX 4060 made this a substantial step above the two RTX 4050 systems. It is the more appropriate tier for 1440p-class gaming, while the powerful HX-series processor also suits video editing, compilation and other CPU-heavy workloads. The 1TB SSD is a practical advantage: it gives a game library more room before an upgrade becomes necessary.

The 240Hz panel should not be read as a promise of 240fps in every game. High refresh rates are easiest to exploit in esports and less demanding titles; higher resolution and visual-quality settings reduce frame rates. Even so, a fast panel can offer smoother motion when the system produces sufficiently high frame rates.
The Omen’s price premium also buys a larger, heavier performance laptop that will generally need to be plugged in for maximum output. The reported $300 saving was based on the source’s stated regular price, not a verified long-term market average. A current equivalent is worth considering when its RTX 4060-class performance, warranty and display justify the additional cost over a budget model.
Choose this class of laptop if: you want the strongest balance of gaming performance, processor headroom and storage without paying for the highest-end configuration.
3. Asus ROG Strix G16: best for demanding gaming and creative work
The Asus ROG Strix G16 was listed at $1,499, advertised as $300 off. Laptop Mag reported a Core i9-13980HX, RTX 4070, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD, alongside a 16-inch 2560×1600 display with a 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time. The display was also reported to offer 100% DCI-P3 coverage and Pantone Validation.
This was the performance leader of the four. The RTX 4070 provides more graphics headroom than the RTX 4050 and 4060 configurations, making the Strix the better fit for high settings at 1440p-class resolutions, demanding games and GPU-accelerated creative applications. Its wide color coverage is more relevant to creators than a basic gaming panel’s refresh rate alone.

There is an important qualification: laptop RTX 4070 performance varies with the system’s power limit, cooling design and tuning. The GPU label does not establish desktop-equivalent performance or a guaranteed frame rate. The Core i9 and fast display also add value only if your games or applications can use them.

High-end gaming laptops are typically bulky, loud under sustained load and less capable on battery. The reported 16GB RAM was adequate for gaming at the time, but creators who multitask heavily may eventually want more. Confirm whether memory is upgradeable on the exact model before checkout.
Choose this class of laptop if: you will actually use the extra GPU headroom, high-resolution fast display or creator-focused color coverage—and are comfortable with the higher price and lower portability.

The MSI Katana was listed at $799, advertised as $200 off. Its reported configuration included a Core i7-13620H, RTX 4050, 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD. Like the Victus, it used a 15.6-inch 1920×1080, 144Hz display.
The Katana was positioned as an alternative if the cheaper Victus sold out. Its key advantage was storage: 1TB is considerably more comfortable than 512GB for a growing game library. The Core i7 also provides additional processor capacity, but the RTX 4050 remains the limiting component for demanding gaming.

At the historical prices, the Katana cost $300 more than the Victus while keeping the same GPU tier. That made it a reasonable fallback for buyers who needed the larger SSD, but not an automatic better deal. The 1080p/144Hz display was functional rather than premium, and buyers should compare the exact CPU, screen, memory and warranty on any current replacement listing.
Choose this class of laptop if: storage matters more to you than a premium display or a higher-tier GPU, and the price gap over an equivalent Victus is small.
How to judge a current Walmart replacement
Because these offers date from 2024, a current listing may be a newer generation, a different configuration or a Marketplace product rather than the original laptop. Use this checklist before paying:
- Verify the GPU exactly. Confirm whether the listing says RTX 4050, RTX 4060 or RTX 4070, and check the GPU power limit when the manufacturer provides it.
- Check the complete configuration. Confirm the processor, 8GB or 16GB RAM, 512GB or 1TB SSD, screen resolution and refresh rate. Similar product names can hide major differences.
- Check seller and condition. Look for “sold by,” “shipped by,” and whether the unit is new, refurbished or open-box. Marketplace return handling and warranty coverage may differ.
- Review delivery and returns. Confirm shipping or pickup estimates, the return window and any restocking or condition requirements before checkout.
- Confirm the operating system and keyboard. Make sure Windows is included, the edition is suitable, and the keyboard layout matches your needs.
- Inspect upgradeability. Check for replaceable RAM, a second memory slot and available M.2 storage slots. Do not assume every model supports the same upgrades.
- Compare the final price, not the headline saving. “Save $600” may compare with Walmart’s previous price, MSRP or another temporary reference price. It does not prove the price was the lowest available.
Which one should you buy?
- Lowest budget: Look for an equivalent to the HP Victus with an RTX 4050 and 16GB RAM.
- Best overall balance: An HP Omen 16-equivalent with an RTX 4060, 1TB SSD and a good 1440p display is the sensible step-up.
- Best performance: Choose an Asus ROG Strix G16-equivalent with an RTX 4070 only if you need its additional graphics headroom.
- More storage on a budget: The MSI Katana-style configuration makes sense when its 1TB SSD and processor justify the premium over an RTX 4050 Victus.
Do not treat the 2024 prices as live Walmart deals in September 2026. If you find a current listing, verify the exact model and seller first; if the hardware is materially different, it should be evaluated as a new deal rather than presented as one of these historical offers.
Any Game Pass promotion mentioned with the original HP Omen or Asus listing was time-limited and configuration-specific, so it should not be assumed to remain valid.
