Minecraft: Bedrock Edition is the best universal cross-platform game overall. It lets Xbox, PlayStation, Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile players share a world, provided everyone uses Bedrock rather than Java. For different priorities, choose Fortnite for variety, Rocket League for quick free matches, Sea of Thieves for shared adventure, Fall Guys for an easy party game, or Destiny 2 for a long-term PvE hobby.

Below are 40 ranked recommendations, with the platform scope, price model, best use case, and important restrictions for each. Cross-play is not the same as simply releasing a game on multiple platforms, and several entries restrict ranked modes, PC-console matchmaking, mobile play, console generations, accounts, or purchases.

Ranking scope: This is a ranked editorial guide to online multiplayer cross-play, not a list of games that merely happen to be available on several systems. The order weighs platform coverage, party setup, multiplayer variety, accessibility, current relevance, and the seriousness of platform or mode restrictions. Live-service policies and platform lineups can change, so confirm the official support details before buying or inviting a mixed-platform group.

What cross-platform actually means

Cross-platform, in this guide, means that players using different platforms can join the same online multiplayer experience. It does not automatically mean cross-progression, shared purchases, cross-save, unrestricted matchmaking, or identical content on every device.

The clearest example is Minecraft: Bedrock players on Xbox, PlayStation, Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile can play together, but Java Edition is a separate multiplayer ecosystem. Competitive games also commonly divide players by platform or input method. Console players may remain in a console matchmaking pool until a PC player joins their party, and ranked modes may impose stricter limits than casual modes.

The 40 best cross-platform games, ranked

1. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition

Best for: Families, creative groups, and players who want a shared world that can last for years.
Platform scope: Xbox, PlayStation, Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile through Bedrock; Java Edition does not cross-play with Bedrock.
Price model: Paid game, with optional Realms hosting and marketplace purchases.
Watch for: Everyone must use Bedrock, and players generally need Microsoft accounts linked to their platform accounts.

Bedrock is the safest universal recommendation because it combines unusually broad device coverage with genuine freedom: build a town, survive together, automate farms, explore, or simply leave a persistent world open for casual visits. Realms can make hosting easier for a group that does not want one player’s console or PC to remain online, but Realms is not required for every multiplayer setup. Do not buy Java Edition expecting it to join a Bedrock world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Fortnite

Best for: Social groups that want several different multiplayer games under one free download.
Platform scope: Major consoles, PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile availability that varies by region and storefront.
Price model: Free to play, with optional cosmetic purchases and passes.
Watch for: Mobile availability, account linking, parental settings, and individual experience or mode rules can differ.

Fortnite is more than its original battle royale format. Battle Royale, Zero Build, Creative, and a wide range of additional experiences make it the broadest social platform on this list. It is particularly effective when one friend wants a competitive match and another would rather play a low-pressure user-created activity. The sheer amount of content can also make the experience less consistent than a purpose-built game, so agree on a mode before everyone joins.

3. Rocket League

Best for: Mixed-skill groups that want short, instantly understandable competitive matches.
Platform scope: Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.
Price model: Free to play.
Watch for: Online account linking and platform-specific voice or parental-control settings.

Rocket League remains one of the cleanest cross-play recommendations: drive a rocket-powered car, hit a ball into a goal, and play another match in a few minutes. The basics are easy to understand, while ranked play has enough depth for serious groups. It also works well when friends have different hardware because a controller, keyboard, or console can all be viable depending on the player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Sea of Thieves

Best for: Groups that want shared adventures and memorable stories rather than repeated short matches.
Platform scope: Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5 within the same wider ecosystem.
Price model: Paid game or access through an applicable subscription, depending on platform and current availability.
Watch for: Microsoft-account requirements, voice-chat settings, and platform-specific multiplayer controls before inviting PlayStation players.

Sea of Thieves is at its best when the group treats the game as a voyage rather than a checklist. Sailing, treasure hunting, naval combat, world events, and the possibility of running into other crews create stories that a conventional lobby game cannot reproduce. PlayStation 5 joining the existing Xbox and PC ecosystem made it a much stronger mixed-platform choice, but account and communication setup deserves attention before the first voyage.

5. Helldivers 2

Best for: Coordinated four-player co-op, friendly-fire chaos, and mission-based shooter sessions.
Platform scope: PC and PlayStation 5 are the established core cross-play footprint; verify the current console lineup before publication or purchase.
Price model: Paid game with ongoing content and optional purchases.
Watch for: Platform availability and account requirements have changed over time.

Helldivers 2 earns its place through teamwork rather than a huge number of modes. Players call in weapons, vehicles, bombardments, and reinforcements while trying not to destroy one another. Friendly fire makes communication meaningful, and the enemy factions demand different approaches. Its smaller platform footprint than Fortnite or Rocket League is the main reason it does not rank higher, not a lack of co-op identity.

6. Apex Legends

Best for: Players who want a polished free-to-play battle royale with character abilities and squad tactics.
Platform scope: PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Price model: Free to play, with optional cosmetic and seasonal purchases.
Watch for: Console players are generally matched with console players; a party containing a PC player enters PC matchmaking.

Apex has a high skill ceiling, excellent movement, and distinct legends that give a group reasons to coordinate. It is less forgiving than Fortnite for newcomers, especially when learning loot, rotations, abilities, and revive systems. The PC matchmaking rule is important: inviting a PC friend changes the matchmaking environment for the whole party rather than simply adding one more player to a console pool.

7. Destiny 2

Best for: Groups that want a long-term PvE hobby with strikes, dungeons, raids, seasonal activities, and PvP.
Platform scope: PlayStation, Xbox, and PC with cross-play.
Price model: Free entry point with paid expansions and seasonal or current-content purchases.
Watch for: Cross-play and cross-save are separate systems. Competitive matchmaking uses console and PC pools with special rules for mixed parties.

Destiny 2 is the deepest sustained cross-platform ecosystem here. A group can begin with accessible activities, graduate to build crafting and dungeons, and eventually attempt raids that require careful roles and communication. The game’s purchase structure is more complicated than a single boxed product: owning an expansion on one platform does not necessarily make every associated purchase or entitlement available elsewhere. Check both cross-play and cross-save settings separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Overwatch 2

Best for: Casual mixed-platform teams that like character-based objectives and quick rounds.
Platform scope: Major consoles and PC.
Price model: Free to play, with optional cosmetic and seasonal purchases.
Watch for: Cross-play covers non-competitive modes, while competitive matchmaking separates console and PC pools.

Overwatch 2 gives each player a clear role and lets a group build a team around tanks, damage heroes, and support characters. That makes it approachable for casual play, although the large roster and ability interactions take time to learn. Treat the competitive restriction as a feature rather than a footnote: a mixed console-and-PC group should plan on non-competitive modes if everyone wants to play together.

9. Call of Duty: Warzone

Best for: Groups seeking a free, large-scale shooter with fast matches and a substantial player population.
Platform scope: Current and previous console generations plus PC.
Price model: Free to play, with optional battle passes and cosmetic purchases.
Watch for: Cross-play, input, privacy, and matchmaking controls can affect the party experience.

Warzone is the choice for players who want a more military-styled battle royale or large-scale mode than Fortnite offers. It has a lot of settings and a demanding learning curve, but its familiar gunplay and broad platform support make it easy to assemble a squad. Check whether cross-play or input-based options are enabled consistently across the group before troubleshooting an invitation that appears not to work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Fall Guys

Best for: Families, party groups, and players with very different skill levels.
Platform scope: PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
Price model: Free to play.
Watch for: Epic account linking is used for friends and progression, and the quality of individual rounds varies.

Fall Guys is one of the least intimidating ways to bring a mixed-platform group together. Its obstacle courses and elimination rounds are readable within seconds, failure is usually funny rather than punishing, and a less experienced player can still contribute to the group’s enjoyment. It is a better recommendation for a relaxed party than for players looking for a serious competitive ladder.

11. No Man’s Sky

Best for: Exploration, base building, shared discovery, and long-form survival sessions.
Platform scope: Broad multi-platform support with cross-play; confirm the latest platform-specific feature notes before starting a shared project.
Price model: Paid game with substantial ongoing updates.
Watch for: Feature availability and multiplayer details can differ by platform or update.

No Man’s Sky is a strong alternative to conventional matchmaking. Friends can explore, gather resources, build bases, and pursue expeditions together, with the appeal coming from a shared sense of place rather than a scoreboard. It suits patient groups better than players who need a tightly scripted four-player campaign, and agreeing on a base location and progression goals will prevent the session from becoming aimless.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Diablo IV

Best for: Persistent action-RPG campaigns built around loot, builds, dungeons, and seasonal returns.
Platform scope: PC, PlayStation, and Xbox with cross-play.
Price model: Paid game with expansions and seasonal purchases or content structures.
Watch for: Expansions and platform purchases may need to be handled separately.

Diablo IV is particularly good for a group that wants to return every few months, create new seasonal characters, and compare increasingly elaborate builds. Its combat is easy to start but offers plenty of optimization later. The main practical issue is entitlement management: do not assume that purchasing an expansion or add-on on one platform automatically grants it on another.

13. Warframe

Best for: Free co-op looter gameplay for players willing to learn a dense progression system.
Platform scope: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile, subject to account-linking and feature rules.
Price model: Free to play.
Watch for: Cross-platform missions, friends, clans, and cross-platform save are supported in the official ecosystem, but trading and account-linking restrictions still matter.

Warframe offers an enormous amount of cooperative content without an entry price, from fast missions to open-world areas and long-term equipment progression. It is not the easiest game to explain to a new friend: currencies, frames, weapons, crafting timers, and star-chart progression can overwhelm beginners. Give new players a guided starting session rather than dropping them into an advanced mission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

14. Dead by Daylight

Best for: Asymmetric horror in which one player hunts four survivors.
Platform scope: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch; mobile is a separate ecosystem.
Price model: Paid game with optional characters, chapters, and cosmetics.
Watch for: Mobile players cannot be assumed to join the console and PC cross-play pool.

Dead by Daylight creates a very different group dynamic from a standard co-op game. Survivors must cooperate while the killer pursues them, and the killer has a separate objective and toolkit. Cross-play makes it easy to fill a lobby across the main console and PC platforms, but the game’s asymmetric balance means a group should expect uneven rounds and a learning curve for both roles.

15. Among Us

Best for: Large groups, social deduction, and mixed hardware that includes phones.
Platform scope: Major consoles, PC, and mobile versions.
Price model: Low-cost or free-to-start depending on platform, with optional purchases.
Watch for: Use the same compatible version and account or room settings, especially when mixing mobile and console players.

Among Us remains one of the most practical cross-play games because it does not demand fast reflexes or expensive hardware. The game works especially well when the party is larger than a typical four-player co-op squad: players discuss evidence, complete tasks, and try to identify the impostor. Voice chat outside the game can improve the social experience, but establish communication rules if younger players are involved.

16. The Finals

Best for: Destruction-focused competitive shooting and a modern alternative to Call of Duty or Overwatch.
Platform scope: PC and major current consoles, subject to the current platform policy.
Price model: Free to play.
Watch for: Cross-play, account features, and competitive-mode restrictions should be checked against the current policy.

The Finals stands out because arenas can be damaged and reshaped rather than treated as static backdrops. That gives teams tactical options beyond aiming skill: collapse a structure, open a new route, or destroy cover around an objective. It is a good casual recommendation for a group that wants spectacle, but its competitive rules and population can change as the live service evolves.

17. Street Fighter 6

Best for: Players who want a serious fighting game with approachable training and single-player content.
Platform scope: Primarily PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Price model: Paid game with optional character and cosmetic content.
Watch for: Do not promise cross-play with every older-generation or portable version.

Street Fighter 6 is the strongest all-around fighting-game recommendation because it does more than provide online matches. Training tools, World Tour content, accessible control options, and a strong online structure give newcomers a way to learn before facing experienced opponents. Cross-play expands the available player pool across the principal PC and current-console versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

18. Tekken 8

Best for: Groups that prefer 3D fighting, large character movesets, and competitive online play.
Platform scope: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Price model: Paid game with optional additional characters and cosmetics.
Watch for: Cross-play applies to the principal current versions, not automatically to every platform in the franchise’s history.

Tekken 8 is a good fit for friends who want a fighting game with sidesteps, ring positioning, and distinctive character identities. Its online infrastructure makes geographically distributed competition practical, but fighting games expose connection quality more than many genres do. Players should prefer wired or stable connections and test a private match before committing to a long competitive session.

19. Marvel Rivals

Best for: Casual hero-shooter groups who want recognizable licensed characters and team-focused modes.
Platform scope: PC and supported current consoles; verify the latest platform and ranked-mode rules.
Price model: Free to play.
Watch for: Ranked matchmaking may not use the same cross-play rules as casual modes.

Marvel Rivals is easier to recommend to a mixed casual group than to a team preparing for high-level competition. The character roster gives new players an obvious entry point, while objectives and team abilities provide room to improve. Because the service and its policies are relatively new compared with long-running competitors, check the current restrictions before promising a specific ranked setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

20. PUBG: Battlegrounds

Best for: Tactical battle royale players who value positioning, preparation, and slower engagements.
Platform scope: Cross-play is strongest between PlayStation and Xbox consoles; PC matchmaking is not universally interchangeable with console play.
Price model: Free to play with optional purchases.
Watch for: Calling PUBG fully cross-platform without naming the console limitation is misleading.

PUBG rewards patience more heavily than Fortnite or Warzone. Looting, sightlines, vehicle decisions, and sound awareness can matter as much as a quick firefight. The console cross-play pool is useful for mixed PlayStation-and-Xbox groups, but a PC friend may require a different matchmaking arrangement, so confirm the intended platform combination first.

21. Rainbow Six Siege X

Best for: Experienced groups that want methodical tactical shooting and destructible objectives.
Platform scope: Cross-play exists across supported platform pools, but it is not equivalent to unrestricted PC-console matchmaking.
Price model: Paid or access-dependent edition, with additional content and versions varying over time.
Watch for: State the exact supported pools rather than calling it universally cross-platform.

Rainbow Six Siege X is built around information, utility, and preparation. Operators, destructible walls, cameras, traps, and sound create a demanding game in which a single mistake can decide a round. That depth makes it rewarding for an established team but a poor blind recommendation for casual friends. Platform and input-pool rules should be part of the invitation conversation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

22. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7

Best for: Groups wanting a current premium shooter with traditional multiplayer, Zombies, and campaign-adjacent co-op or multiplayer content.
Platform scope: PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
Price model: Premium purchase, with optional additional content or passes.
Watch for: Cross-play opt-out and matchmaking considerations can affect how mixed parties are placed.

Black Ops 7 is the premium alternative to Warzone for groups that want a fuller package of modes. It has more to offer than a single battle royale loop, but it also has more platform, account, and matchmaking variables. Verify the current generation support and whether every desired mode accepts the same mixed-platform party before purchasing for a group.

23. Grounded

Best for: Four-player survival co-op with a manageable shared project.
Platform scope: Xbox, PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.
Price model: Paid game, with availability potentially affected by a platform subscription.
Watch for: Confirm the host, save, and account requirements on the platform combination being used.

Grounded turns a backyard into a compact survival playground. Its smaller scale is an advantage: groups can build a base, learn crafting, explore dangerous areas, and finish meaningful projects without facing the endless sprawl of a giant survival sandbox. It is one of the better choices for friends who want a campaign-like co-op commitment rather than an indefinitely expanding live service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

24. Palworld

Best for: Creature collecting combined with crafting, exploration, and base management.
Platform scope: Multi-platform cross-play support and feature scope have evolved through updates; check the current official platform notes.
Price model: Paid game, with edition and platform availability subject to change.
Watch for: Do not assume every version has identical multiplayer or save features.

Palworld appeals to groups that want a shared survival world with a creature-collecting hook. Players can build bases, gather resources, explore, and develop different roles within the settlement. Its place on a current list comes with a larger-than-usual verification warning because cross-play and other features have changed as the game has expanded.

25. Monster Hunter Wilds

Best for: Groups that enjoy preparing equipment, learning large monsters, and repeating co-op hunts.
Platform scope: Current PC, PlayStation, and Xbox versions with cross-play.
Price model: Paid game.
Watch for: Check platform-generation, account, and online requirements before assembling the hunting party.

Monster Hunter Wilds is a strong cross-platform choice for players who want teamwork with a clear rhythm: prepare, track, hunt, carve, improve, and take on a tougher target. Each weapon changes the way a player contributes, so a group can develop complementary approaches rather than simply choosing different character skins. It requires more patience than a match-based shooter, but successful hunts create a satisfying shared progression loop.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

26. Final Fantasy XIV

Best for: A long-running online community that wants an MMO rather than occasional matches.
Platform scope: PC and console players share servers and can play together.
Price model: Subscription-based, with expansions and account registration handled through platform-sensitive rules.
Watch for: Subscriptions, expansions, and account registration are not as interchangeable as the multiplayer worlds.

Final Fantasy XIV is the most suitable game here for a group planning a multi-year online home. Story quests, dungeons, raids, crafting, housing, and social activities provide different reasons to log in, and PC and console players inhabit the same server ecosystem. It is not a quick recommendation for a one-night party: everyone should understand the subscription and expansion structure before committing.

27. Roblox

Best for: Younger or highly social groups that want a huge catalog of user-created multiplayer experiences.
Platform scope: Broad device support, subject to the platform and the individual experience.
Price model: Free platform with optional purchases.
Watch for: Roblox is a platform of games, not one uniform game; quality, controls, moderation, and multiplayer rules vary substantially.

Roblox can fill almost any party-game niche, from obstacle courses to role-play and competitive mini-games. That variety is its strength and its limitation. A group should select a specific experience together and review age, chat, privacy, and purchase settings rather than treating the entire platform as one consistent product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

28. EA Sports FC 26

Best for: Mixed-console groups that want current soccer matches and online leagues.
Platform scope: Cross-play is generally constrained by console generation and mode.
Price model: Premium annual sports release with optional in-game purchases.
Watch for: Do not promise that every PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC player can enter every mode together.

FC 26 is the obvious choice for a group whose priority is soccer, but sports-game cross-play is often more conditional than the headline suggests. Generation, mode, and feature differences matter more than the fact that the game has several platform versions. Establish the exact consoles and mode—such as an online league or a particular competitive format—before everyone buys.

29. F1 25

Best for: Serious racing groups that want leagues, longer sessions, and structured competition.
Platform scope: Cross-platform support with current-generation and mode restrictions.
Price model: Premium annual racing release with optional additional content.
Watch for: Confirm the supported generation combination and whether the desired league mode uses the same cross-play pool.

F1 25 suits a more committed group than a quick arcade racer. A shared championship or league gives everyone a reason to practice and return, while the longer races reward consistency rather than one lucky round. The trade-off is setup complexity: platform generation, wheel or controller configuration, and race-length preferences should be agreed before the first event.

30. Madden NFL 26

Best for: Mixed current-generation console groups that want American football.
Platform scope: Cross-play is narrower than the headline suggests and is primarily relevant to supported current-generation console groups.
Price model: Premium annual sports release with optional in-game purchases.
Watch for: Describe support by console generation rather than promising universal PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Switch play.

Madden NFL 26 is a useful recommendation because sports fans often care more about a specific sport than a broad cross-play feature list. It can work well for an online league or a few head-to-head games, provided the group’s versions match. The annual-release model also means availability, subscription access, and mode support should be checked for the specific edition being purchased.

31. MLB The Show 26

Best for: Baseball fans who want cross-platform matches and online leagues.
Platform scope: Cross-play is supported across the relevant versions; confirm current platform and online-service requirements.
Price model: Premium annual sports release with optional in-game purchases.
Watch for: The audience is specialized, and platform subscriptions may affect online access.

MLB The Show 26 is less universal than Fortnite but can be the best answer for the right group. Online leagues and repeated head-to-head games give baseball fans a reason to return, while the sport’s slower pace makes it easier to play a full session together than a twitch-heavy shooter. Make sure everyone is on a supported version before buying into a shared league.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

32. NBA 2K26

Best for: Basketball groups on supported current-generation PlayStation and Xbox hardware.
Platform scope: Primarily supported current-generation PlayStation and Xbox versions; it is not universal cross-play across all platforms.
Price model: Premium annual sports release with optional in-game purchases.
Watch for: Verify the exact console generation and mode, especially if a PC or older-console player is involved.

NBA 2K26 is a strong choice when the group already shares supported current-generation hardware and wants basketball-specific online play. It should not be marketed as a universal cross-platform game simply because several versions exist. The more platform-diverse the group, the more important it is to check the intended mode before anyone spends money.

33. Sid Meier’s Civilization VII

Best for: Mixed-platform groups that prefer long, turn-based sessions to reflex competition.
Platform scope: Cross-play and cross-platform cloud-save rules can differ by platform and version.
Price model: Paid strategy game with optional editions or downloadable content.
Watch for: Cross-play is not the same as having one universal cloud save across every device.

Civilization VII is ideal for friends who want to build competing empires over several evenings. 34. Borderlands 4

Best for: Campaign co-op built around loot, shooting, humor, and character builds.
Platform scope: Cross-play is a major part of its appeal across supported PC and console versions.
Price model: Premium game with expansions and downloadable content.
Watch for: Platform generation, account, and DLC rules need to be checked before inviting a mixed group.

Borderlands 4 is the pick for friends who want a structured campaign instead of an endless competitive ladder. The combination of co-op shooting and randomized loot gives each player a reason to compare equipment and specialize. Because the game is a newer release, confirm the current cross-play combinations and whether desired downloadable content is shared or separately purchased.

35. Split Fiction

Best for: Two-player narrative co-op with a clear beginning, middle, and ending.
Platform scope: Cross-platform support for the principal versions, with exact combinations worth verifying.
Price model: Paid game; Friend’s Pass can make it especially practical for pairs.
Watch for: It is designed for two players, not a large group or an ongoing shared world.

Split Fiction is the best answer when two friends want a finished story rather than a live-service obligation. Its Friend’s Pass model is particularly useful when only one person needs to buy the full game, subject to the current platform rules. The focused design also makes it a good gift or weekend recommendation for a pair that has struggled to maintain a large multiplayer group.

36. Mortal Kombat 1

Best for: Fighting-game fans who want a mature tone, cinematic presentation, and cross-platform competition.
Platform scope: Cross-play is centered on current PC and console versions; the Switch version may not share every feature.
Price model: Paid game with optional characters and content.
Watch for: Check whether the specific version supports the desired cross-play feature before purchasing.

Mortal Kombat 1 is a strong alternative to Street Fighter and Tekken for players who prefer spectacle, fatalities, and a more cinematic presentation. It supports meaningful online competition, but its platform coverage is not as simple as a universal label suggests. Treat the Switch version and current PC or console versions as separate questions when organizing a group.

37. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising

Best for: Players seeking an accessible anime fighting game and a smaller competitive community.
Platform scope: Cross-play across its principal PC and console versions.
Price model: Paid game with optional additional characters and content.
Watch for: It is better for fighting-game enthusiasts than for a large casual party.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising combines approachable controls with the spacing, timing, and matchup knowledge expected from a traditional fighter. Its cross-play pool helps online activity, while its presentation gives it a distinct identity. It ranks below the biggest fighting-game recommendations because the community and audience are more specialized, not because it lacks value for the right players.

38. Hunt: Showdown 1896

Best for: Experienced groups that want high-tension extraction gameplay and meaningful risk.
Platform scope: Console cross-play is useful, but PC-console matchmaking is not interchangeable.
Price model: Paid game with optional content.
Watch for: The platform limitation is central to the recommendation and should be confirmed before purchase.

Hunt: Showdown 1896 rewards careful movement, sound awareness, and a willingness to lose progress when a plan goes wrong. It is a compelling choice for a stable group that enjoys tension more than constant action. It is not a universal cross-play solution: a console group can benefit from cross-play, but PC players should not be promised access to the same matchmaking pool.

39. Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game

Best for: A lighter asymmetric alternative to Dead by Daylight.
Platform scope: Supported PC and console versions with cross-play.
Price model: Paid game with live-service content.
Watch for: Smaller audience and uncertain long-term live-service longevity make it a less dependable group purchase.

Killer Klowns uses a deliberately campy horror tone and an asymmetric team structure to offer something less grim than Dead by Daylight. Cross-play makes it easy to consider for a mixed-platform party, but player population matters greatly in this genre. It is best bought when the group already knows it wants this particular style rather than as a guaranteed long-term multiplayer home.

40. Escape Academy

Best for: Pairs and small groups that want a finite co-op puzzle experience.
Platform scope: Cross-play combinations depend on the purchased version; verify the exact pair of platforms before buying.
Price model: Paid game, with additional puzzle content depending on edition.
Watch for: It is a concise experience, not an always-online competitive game.

Escape Academy rounds out the list because cross-platform gaming does not have to mean a live service or a battle royale. Solving escape-room-style puzzles together gives a group a clear objective and a natural reason to communicate. Its finite structure is a strength for friends who do not want another game demanding weekly commitment, but the precise cross-play combination should be confirmed first.

How to set up a mixed-platform game night

  1. Write down the exact platforms and generations. Say PlayStation 5 rather than PlayStation, Xbox Series X|S rather than Xbox, and PC storefront or edition where relevant. Sports games, fighting games, and newer releases commonly restrict cross-play by generation.
  2. Confirm the exact game version. Minecraft Bedrock and Java are not interchangeable. A Switch, mobile, older-console, or current-generation edition may not share every multiplayer feature with another version.
  3. Create or link the required publisher account. Microsoft accounts matter for Bedrock and Sea of Thieves; Epic accounts matter for Fortnite, Fall Guys, Rocket League, and other Epic-connected experiences; other games use their own account systems. Use the correct account before buying add-ons or linking a new platform.
  4. Add friends through the game’s own friend system. A PlayStation or Xbox friend list is not always enough. Find the game-specific username or account ID, send the request, and make sure privacy settings permit invitations.
  5. Check cross-play and matchmaking settings. A disabled cross-play toggle, parental restriction, input preference, or ranked-mode rule can make a supported game appear incompatible. Casual and competitive modes may use different platform pools.
  6. Check online-service requirements. Console online multiplayer access may depend on the game, platform, account, region, and whether the title is free to play. Before buying, check your platform’s online multiplayer subscription requirements, including Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online where applicable. Do not assume that a subscription includes a game or expansion unless the current catalog explicitly says so.
  7. Separate cross-play from cross-save. A player may be able to join friends on another platform without carrying characters, purchases, settings, or progression between devices. Destiny 2, Warframe, Diablo IV, and Final Fantasy XIV all illustrate why account and entitlement rules deserve their own check.
  8. Choose voice chat deliberately. Test the game’s voice channel, console privacy settings, and party-chat behavior. If the group uses PC storefronts, availability through Steam and Epic Games Store does not by itself guarantee identical account, save, or voice features.
  9. Use equipment that matches the weakest connection in the group. A cross-platform gaming headset can simplify voice chat, but no headset creates cross-play or guarantees compatibility with every console and PC. Check whether the model uses 3.5 mm, USB, USB-C, wireless, or a platform-specific adapter. For the simplest wired setup, a wired gaming headset with 3.5 mm jack may work across controller and PC setups, provided the ports and chat support match.
  10. Give PC players the right control option. A controller for cross-platform games is useful for Rocket League, racing, sports, and many third-person games, but it is optional and does not alter matchmaking pools. Check the game’s input rules before assuming keyboard-and-mouse and controller players will be treated identically.
  11. Review parental and communication controls. Cross-play can expose younger players to strangers, text chat, voice chat, user-created content, and purchases. Fortnite, Roblox, Among Us, and other social games deserve a settings check before the first session.
  12. Run a private test lobby first. Invite everyone, confirm voice, check that each player can see the others online, and launch the exact mode you plan to play. This catches account, generation, region, and subscription problems before the group schedules a long campaign or league.

Common cross-play problems and the quickest fixes

The friend cannot be found.
Use the game’s publisher account name or ID rather than the console display name. Confirm spelling, privacy settings, blocked-player lists, and whether both players have completed account linking.
The game appears on both platforms but the party will not launch.
Check whether the two versions share a generation and whether the selected mode permits cross-play. A game can be multi-platform without supporting cross-generation or cross-platform play in every mode.
One player can join, but ranked play is unavailable.
Try a non-competitive mode. Overwatch 2 and several shooters separate console and PC competitive pools even when casual cross-play works.
Console players are suddenly facing PC opponents.
Look for a PC player in the party. In Apex Legends and similar games, a mixed party can move into a PC matchmaking pool. Input or cross-play settings may also affect placement.
Progress or purchases are missing on the second platform.
That is a cross-save or entitlement issue, not necessarily a cross-play failure. Check the publisher account, enable the game’s separate cross-save system if available, and review whether expansions or currency are platform-specific.
Voice chat works for some players but not others.
Test the game channel separately from console party chat, then check microphone permissions, parental controls, mute status, NAT or network restrictions, and headset connection mode.

Accessory note: Any accessory links on this page may be monetized. Compatibility should be checked against the specific console, PC port, operating system, and chat method rather than inferred from the words cross-platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does cross-platform mean in games?

Cross-play means players on different platforms can join the same online multiplayer session. It does not automatically include cross-progression, shared purchases, cross-save, or unrestricted matchmaking. A game may allow casual cross-play while separating ranked console and PC pools.

Can Minecraft Java and Bedrock players play together?

No. Minecraft Bedrock players can play together across Xbox, PlayStation, Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile, but Java Edition is a separate multiplayer ecosystem and does not cross-play with Bedrock.

Do I need a console subscription to play cross-platform games online?

Not always. Console online multiplayer access depends on the platform, game type, account, region, and current service rules. Free-to-play games may have different requirements from premium games, so check the relevant Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo online-access policy before buying.

Does cross-play include cross-progression?

No. Cross-play only determines whether players can join the same multiplayer session. Cross-save or cross-progression is a separate feature, and expansions, currencies, and platform purchases may remain tied to the store or platform where they were bought.

What is the best cross-platform game for friends on different systems?

The best broad recommendations are Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for a shared sandbox, Fortnite for variety, Rocket League for simple competitive matches, Sea of Thieves for co-op adventure, Fall Guys for mixed-skill parties, and Among Us for larger social groups. The right choice still depends on the exact platforms and modes in your group.

The Bottom Line

Start with Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for the broadest shared-world support, Fortnite or Rocket League for free and easy sessions, Sea of Thieves or Grounded for co-op, and Fall Guys or Among Us for a low-pressure party. Before anyone buys, confirm the exact edition, console generation, mode, account link, online-service requirement, and whether the game’s cross-save rules are separate from its cross-play rules.
