Choose Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge if your priority is a large technology, magic, farming, Create, or adventure mod collection. Do not try to combine this entire list in one installation: the 40 recommendations span different Minecraft versions, loaders, dependencies, and multiplayer requirements.
This is an April 2026 compatibility snapshot. Minecraft Java Edition 26.1.2 was released on April 9, 2026, making it the newest April baseline, but many major content mods still centered on 1.21.1. Check the exact file, Minecraft version, loader, release channel, and dependencies on the project page before downloading. Read the official 26.1.2 release notice.

What this list covers
This article is for Minecraft: Java Edition players. Java mods are third-party .jar files loaded by Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt. They are not compatible with Minecraft Bedrock Edition, Minecraft Education, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or mobile versions.

The word best here means useful, distinctive, maintained, configurable, reasonably compatible, and worth the setup effort for a particular type of player. It does not mean that every mod is necessary, universally stable, or compatible with every other mod.
First choose your Minecraft version and loader
Minecraft version comes before mod choice. A mod built for 1.21.1 is not automatically compatible with 26.1.2, even when both versions look similar in a download list. The loader matters just as much: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt are separate systems, and a Fabric file is not automatically a NeoForge file.
| What you want to do | Best April 2026 path |
|---|---|
| Improve FPS, add shaders, maps, UI features, or lightweight utilities | 26.1.2 + Fabric |
| Use newer 26.1 world-generation or utility projects | 26.1.2 + Fabric or NeoForge, according to each project’s file listing |
| Build a large technology or magic pack | 1.21.1 + NeoForge |
| Play a Create-focused pack | 1.21.1 + NeoForge |
| Join an existing modded server or modpack | Use the exact Minecraft version, loader, and mod files specified by that server or pack |
| Run a multiplayer server | Match the server’s Minecraft version, loader, required server-side mods, and configuration |
Fabric’s mod-installation documentation emphasizes matching the Minecraft version, loader, and Java Edition. NeoForge provides a separate user guide. Treat a project page’s loader selector and individual release file as authoritative; a project may support different versions, loaders, or features at different times.

Mod, modpack, shader, datapack, and plugin: what is the difference?
- Mod: a Java
.jarloaded by Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt. - Modpack: a curated collection of mods, configurations, resource packs, and sometimes scripts. A modpack is not one mod and should not be ranked as though it were one.
- Shader pack: visual files loaded through a shader-support mod such as Iris. A shader pack is not itself a loader or gameplay mod.
- Resource pack: changes textures, models, sounds, fonts, and sometimes visual behavior.
- Datapack: vanilla-compatible world data that can change recipes, loot, terrain, functions, and structures without being a conventional mod.
- Server plugin: an extension for a Paper, Spigot, or Purpur-style server. Plugins are not interchangeable with Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge client mods.
Terralith is a useful edge case: it has datapack and mod forms. The installation method, dependencies, and world-generation implications differ between those forms.
How to install mods without damaging a save
- Back up your worlds. Close Minecraft and copy the relevant save or the entire modded instance to another location. World-generation and progression mods deserve a separate backup before every major change.
- Create an isolated instance or game directory. Do not mix a 26.1.2 Fabric setup with a 1.21.1 NeoForge setup in one uncontrolled
.minecraftfolder. A launcher with separate instances is safer and makes rollback easier. - Choose one exact Minecraft version and one loader. Select 26.1.2 or 1.21.1 first, then install Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt as required.
- Install the loader from its official documentation. For NeoForge, close the launcher, run the installer
.jar, select Install client, choose Proceed, then select the created NeoForge profile. Use a custom game directory when possible. Start the profile once so it creates its folders; the official steps are in the NeoForge client guide. - For Fabric, start the Fabric profile once. On the default launcher locations, the mods folder is usually
%appdata%.minecraftmodson Windows,~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/modson macOS, and~/.minecraft/modson Linux. A separate instance may use a different folder. - Download from a reputable source. Prefer Modrinth, CurseForge, or the creator’s official repository. Avoid suspicious mirrors, installers that bundle unrelated executables, and files that do not clearly identify their Minecraft version and loader.
- Read the dependency list. Do not hide required libraries behind an assumed download button. Fabric projects often require Fabric API, while content projects may require libraries such as Zeta, Moonlight, Curios, Trinkets, Geckolib, Patchouli, or Fabric Language Kotlin.
- Put only compatible mod files in the instance’s
modsfolder. Do not put shader packs or resource packs there. Do not rename files to make an incompatible version appear compatible. - Launch and test before adding more. Add a few mods at a time. Enter a disposable world, check the title screen and logs, and only then begin a long-term survival world.
For example, Inventory Profiles Next on Fabric lists Fabric API, Fabric Language Kotlin, and libIPN as dependencies, with Mod Menu optional. Quark requires Zeta on 1.20.1 and newer, Supplementaries requires Moonlight Library, Ars Nouveau requires Curios API and Geckolib on its listed 1.21.1 NeoForge release, and Botania requires Patchouli plus Curios on Forge or Trinkets on Fabric/Quilt.
Client-side, server-side, or both?
These labels describe where a mod must run, not whether a server owner will permit it.
- Client-only: the server usually does not need it. Sodium, Iris, Dynamic FPS, and most HUD or inventory-interface mods fit here.
- Server-only: players may not need to install anything, depending on the mod.
- Both sides: the client and server need compatible copies or matching configurations. Most gameplay, world-generation, and content mods belong here.
- Singleplayer: a singleplayer world contains an integrated server, so a mod described as server-side can still affect the local game.
There are important exceptions. Lithium can run on the client, server, or both. AppleSkin is mainly client-side, but accurate saturation and exhaustion synchronization can require server support. On Minecraft 1.21.2 and later, the JEI project page says recipes are stored server-side, so server installation may be needed for recipe synchronization.

The 40 best Minecraft mods for April 2026
The entries below are grouped by player goal rather than arranged as a universal popularity ranking. The April 2026 ecosystem has two practical lanes: a newer 26.1.2/Fabric utility lane and a more mature 1.21.1/NeoForge content lane. A 26.1.x listing does not necessarily mean that every 26.1 patch or every loader is supported, and beta or alpha files are not equivalent to stable releases.
Performance, graphics, and render distance
Start with Sodium and add only the performance tools that address your actual bottleneck. No optimization mod guarantees a particular FPS increase; results depend on hardware, render distance, shaders, resource packs, Java runtime, world, and the rest of the mod list.
| # | Mod | Best for | April lane and loader | Side | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sodium | FPS and reduced micro-stutter | 26.1.2 Fabric release available | Client | A rendering replacement rather than a gameplay overhaul. Performance varies with hardware and software. |
| 2 | Iris Shaders | Shader packs | 26.1.x listing; use the matching loader file | Client | Usually paired with Sodium. Individual shader packs still have their own compatibility limits. |
| 3 | Lithium | Game-logic and tick optimization | 26.1.x release available; loader-specific | Client, server, or both | Useful for logic-heavy worlds, but it does not replace a rendering mod. |
| 4 | FerriteCore | Lower memory usage | 26.1.x listing; select the correct loader | Usually client and server as supported | RAM savings depend on the pack and how much duplicated data its other mods create. |
| 5 | ImmediatelyFast | HUD, text, entity, map, and GUI rendering | 26.1.x listing; loader-specific | Client | Most useful in CPU-bound rendering situations. The project’s historical results are not a promise for every computer. |
| 6 | Entity Culling | Skipping hidden mobs and block entities | 26.1.x listing; select the matching loader | Client | Whitelist mods whose block entities render beyond normal visibility bounds if something disappears incorrectly. |
| 7 | Dynamic FPS | Reducing resource use while tabbed out or idle | 26.1.x listing; loader-specific | Client | It intentionally reduces background rendering, so it is not an FPS booster while actively playing. |
| 8 | Distant Horizons | Very long-distance terrain views | 26.1.x listing; verify loader and shader support | Client, with server considerations | Terrain must be generated and cached. Shader compatibility needs individual testing. |
| 9 | Continuity | Connected textures and emissive resource-pack support | 26.1.x Fabric/Quilt-oriented lane | Client | It supports compatible resource packs; it is not a general shader replacement. |
| 10 | Bobby | Seeing cached terrain beyond a server’s view distance | 26.1.x Fabric listing | Client | It can display previously received or fallback chunks, but cannot reveal unexplored server terrain. |
Sodium is the strongest first installation for a lightweight Fabric setup, and Iris is the natural shader companion. The practical April baseline is Fabric plus Sodium, then Iris if shaders are wanted, followed by Lithium, FerriteCore, ImmediatelyFast, Entity Culling, and Dynamic FPS only where useful. Do not blindly stack OptiFine with Sodium, ImmediatelyFast, or Continuity; do not add multiple shader loaders; and do not assume an old Indium build is needed by a current renderer.
Interface, inventory, recipes, maps, and information
| # | Mod | Best for | April lane and loader | Side | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | Mod Menu | Viewing installed mods and opening supported configuration screens | 26.1.x Fabric/Quilt | Client | It is primarily a Fabric/Quilt utility and does not configure every mod automatically. |
| 12 | Just Enough Items | Recipe and item lookup | 26.1.2 file listed, beta channel; loader-specific | Client, sometimes server too | R shows recipes and U shows uses. Newer versions may need server installation for synchronization. |
| 13 | Roughly Enough Items | A JEI alternative, especially in Fabric-oriented packs | 26.1.x listing; commonly selected for Fabric/Quilt packs | Client, with pack-specific server considerations | Choose one primary recipe viewer unless a pack specifically supports both. |
| 14 | Jade | Identifying blocks, inventories, mobs, and machine states | 26.1.x listing; loader-specific | Client, with optional server support | Server support can improve the accuracy of information for modded content. |
| 15 | AppleSkin | Hunger, saturation, exhaustion, and food-value HUD information | 26.1.x listing; loader-specific | Mostly client; server may improve sync | Accurate server-side saturation data may require the mod on the server. |
| 16 | Mouse Tweaks | Faster inventory movement and scrolling | 26.1.x Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge listings where available | Client | Key behavior can conflict with other inventory utilities; adjust its configuration if needed. |
| 17 | Inventory Profiles Next | Sorting, matching-item transfers, locked slots, and gear sets | 26.1.x listing; Fabric has several dependencies | Client | On Fabric, check Fabric API, Fabric Language Kotlin, libIPN, and optional Mod Menu before launching. |
| 18 | Xaero’s Minimap | Minimap, waypoints, cave mode, and entity display | 26.1.x listing; loader-specific | Client, with server rule implications | Entity radar and cave maps may be prohibited on PvP, challenge, or public servers. |
| 19 | Xaero’s World Map | Full-screen maps of explored terrain | 26.1.x listing; loader-specific | Client, with server rule implications | Pairs well with Xaero’s Minimap. It does not make unexplored terrain legitimate or visible. |
| 20 | WorldEdit | Large-scale building, copying, replacing, and terraforming | Use the exact supported version and loader file | Usually server or integrated server | Primarily a builder and administrator tool, not a survival-progression mod. |
For a normal survival interface, Jade, AppleSkin, and either JEI or REI are the best starting points. Inventory Profiles Next is more powerful than Mouse Tweaks, but it also has more dependencies and can reduce the friction—and therefore some of the challenge—of inventory management. On multiplayer servers, read the rules before enabling map radar, cave maps, teleporting waypoints, or other information advantages. Xaero’s project documentation describes fair-play editions and server-enforced settings.
Travel, world generation, and vanilla-plus improvements
| # | Mod | Best for | April lane and loader | Side | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 21 | Waystones | Named teleportation points | 26.1.2 listing; loader-specific | Both sides for multiplayer gameplay | Teleport costs, village generation, and permissions are configurable. |
| 22 | Terralith | Major terrain and biome variety using mostly vanilla blocks | 26.1.x datapack and mod forms | World/server, with matching client content where required | Its project page warns against removing it from an existing world. Start a new world and keep a backup. |
| 23 | Biomes O’ Plenty | Large biome and decorative-block expansion | 26.1.2 listing; loader-specific | Both sides | Check world-generation compatibility with other biome mods before creating the save. |
| 24 | YUNG’s Better Strongholds | More varied and substantial strongholds | 26.1.1–26.1.2 listings; loader-specific | Both sides | Install before the relevant structures generate and test alongside other structure mods. |
| 25 | YUNG’s Better Mineshafts | More varied and rewarding mineshafts | 26.1.1–26.1.2 listings; loader-specific | Both sides | Verify structure-generation compatibility and use a new test world. |
| 26 | Quark | Hundreds of modular vanilla-plus improvements | Mainly 1.21–1.21.1; Forge/NeoForge lane | Both sides | Requires Zeta on current versions, and its many features can be disabled individually. |
| 27 | Supplementaries | Functional decoration, storage, signs, jars, automation, and small mechanics | Mainly 1.21–1.21.1; primarily Forge/NeoForge | Both sides | Requires Moonlight Library. The Fabric version may omit features found in the mainly Forge implementation. |
Terralith adds more than 95 biomes according to its project page, but its world-generation behavior is precisely why it should be installed before starting a new long-term world. Biomes O’ Plenty is a broader biome-and-block expansion. YUNG’s Better Strongholds and Better Mineshafts are more focused structure improvements. Quark and Supplementaries are better choices when you want vanilla-plus detail without completely replacing the world.
Farming, technology, storage, and automation
These mods are the core of the stable content lane. Most are better suited to a deliberately assembled 1.21.1 NeoForge or Forge pack than to a casual 26.1.2 utility instance.
| # | Mod | Best for | April lane and loader | Side | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 28 | Farmer’s Delight | Farming, cooking, food progression, and kitchen builds | Mainly 1.21–1.21.1; NeoForge/Forge | Both sides | A gentle farming and food expansion rather than a complete overhaul. |
| 29 | Create | Animated machinery, automation, trains, and mechanical factories | Mainly 1.21.1; NeoForge/Forge | Both sides | A large progression system with many add-ons. Build the pack around its version rather than adding it to a random instance. |
| 30 | Applied Energistics 2 | Digital storage, autocrafting, networks, and spatial storage | 26.1.2 and 1.21.x listings; loader-specific | Both sides | Channels and network design make it deeper than a simple storage upgrade. |
| 31 | Mekanism | High-tech machines, ore processing, energy, and advanced reactors | Mainly 1.21–1.21.1; Forge/NeoForge | Both sides | Some 1.21.1 builds were marked alpha. The project warns about possible game-breaking bugs and block or inventory loss during updates. |
| 32 | Sophisticated Backpacks | Upgradable portable storage | Verify the exact 1.21.1 loader and file | Both sides | Excellent convenience, but it can substantially reduce inventory-management pressure. |
| 33 | Botany Pots | Compact automated crop farming | 1.21.1 listing; loader-specific | Both sides | Best treated as a convenience automation mod, not a full farming overhaul. |
| 34 | Botania | Natural magic, mana, automation, and in-world machines | Older stable content lane; verify 1.21.1 availability | Both sides | Requires Patchouli plus Curios on Forge or Trinkets on Fabric/Quilt. |
Applied Energistics 2 is an important exception to the 1.21.1 pattern because its project page lists both 26.1.2 and 1.21.x support. Mekanism deserves more caution: do not describe a 1.21.1 alpha build as universally stable, and back up before updating it. Create remains one of the best reasons to stay on a mature 1.21.1 NeoForge lane.

Magic, combat, adventure, colonies, and building
These are content-heavy choices. They add new progression, mobs, dimensions, combat rules, world-generation systems, or server workloads, so check the exact April file rather than assuming that a project’s name implies 26.1.2 support.
| # | Mod | Best for | April lane and loader | Side | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 35 | Ars Nouveau | Spell creation, magical automation, and progression | Mainly 1.21–1.21.1 NeoForge | Both sides | The listed 1.21.1 NeoForge release requires Curios API and Geckolib. |
| 36 | The Aether | A dedicated sky dimension and adventure progression | Verify the exact April loader and Minecraft version | Both sides | An adventure overhaul, not a lightweight add-on. Test dimension travel in a disposable world. |
| 37 | Alex’s Mobs | A large variety of new animals and hostile creatures | Verify exact 1.21.1 support and loader | Both sides | New mobs can affect balance, spawn density, exploration, and server performance. |
| 38 | Alex’s Caves | Large cave biomes and specialized underground exploration | Verify exact 1.21.1 support and loader | Both sides | A world-generation and progression change; use a new world. |
| 39 | Better Combat | More responsive melee combat and weapon animations | Verify loader and 1.21.1 support | Both sides | It changes weapon balance and can conflict with other combat-overhaul mods. |
| 40 | MineColonies | Building and managing a settlement of NPC colonists | Verify exact 1.21.1 support and loader | Both sides | A substantial progression system with meaningful server and CPU demands. |
Recommended starter stacks
These are starting points, not instructions to install every item in a single profile. Confirm each file’s version, loader, dependencies, and release channel first.
Lightweight Fabric stack: 26.1.2

How these selections were made
- Player benefit: the mod solves a common problem or adds a compelling gameplay loop.
- Maintenance: the project has a meaningful current release, documentation, issue activity, or explicit target-version support.
- Compatibility: the Minecraft version, loader, dependencies, and client/server behavior are visible enough for a reader to verify.
- Reasonable risk: the recommendation does not depend on suspicious download mirrors, bundled executables, or unexplained launchers.
- Configurability: features can be adjusted where possible, which matters for Quark, Entity Culling, Waystones, Xaero’s maps, and performance mods.
- Distinct purpose: the list avoids filling all 40 spaces with near-duplicates.
- Multiplayer suitability: server requirements, fairness, permissions, and installation burden are part of the recommendation.
- World safety: world-generation and dimension mods receive stricter warnings than cosmetic or client-only utilities.
- Evidence quality: creator documentation and release pages matter more than download counts alone.
- Version transparency: broad labels such as 1.21.x or 26.1.x are treated as starting points for verification, not guarantees that every patch works.
Common problems and the fastest safe fixes
Wrong loader or Minecraft version
A Fabric mod in a NeoForge instance, a 1.21.1 mod in a 26.1.2 instance, or a Quilt-only file in another loader can produce an immediate launch failure. Return to the project page and check all three fields: Minecraft version, loader, and environment. Do not assume that a similar-looking file is interchangeable.
Missing dependency
Common examples include missing Fabric API, Cloth Config, Moonlight Library, Zeta, Curios, Trinkets, Geckolib, Patchouli, Fabric Language Kotlin, or libIPN. Read the first meaningful dependency line in the crash report or launcher log. The final message saying that Minecraft crashed is usually not the diagnosis.
Client/server mismatch
If a single-player world works but a server rejects the connection, compare the server’s loader, Minecraft version, required mods, and configuration. For content and world-generation mods, install compatible files on both sides. For client utilities, confirm that the server allows them; client-only does not mean fair-play or universally permitted.
Graphics or shader conflict
Use the clean baseline of Fabric plus Sodium first. Add Iris, then the shader pack, then other render utilities one at a time. Avoid combining OptiFine with Sodium, ImmediatelyFast, or Continuity, and remove old compatibility layers unless the current project specifically requires them. If an entity or block disappears, test Entity Culling and its configuration before blaming the world.
World-generation failure or missing terrain
Restore the backup and test the complete mod list on a new seed. Do not remove Terralith, Biomes O’ Plenty, structure overhauls, Alex’s Caves, or a dimension mod from a long-running world without reading the creator’s instructions. Removing the files can leave generated chunks and registries inconsistent.
One mod caused a crash: use binary search
- Keep a backup of the instance and world.
- Remove roughly half the mods, while retaining the dependencies needed by the remaining half.
- Launch the game.
- If it still crashes, the problematic mod is in the half that remains. If the crash disappears, it is in the half you removed.
- Repeat until the conflict is isolated.
- Check the isolated mod’s issue tracker or release page for a known conflict, then update, downgrade, reconfigure, or remove it.
This binary-search approach is also recommended in the NeoForge troubleshooting guide. Fabric documents dependency overrides, but its dependency-override warning is important: ordinary players should not use overrides as a routine fix. If a mod asks for 26.1 and you are on 26.1.2, first look for an updated release and keep a backup before experimenting.

April 2026 compatibility notes
The most important fact about this list is that it is not a single unified modpack. Sodium, Lithium, FerriteCore, ImmediatelyFast, Entity Culling, Distant Horizons, Xaero’s maps, Jade, AppleSkin, Inventory Profiles Next, Waystones, Terralith, Biomes O’ Plenty, and YUNG’s structure projects had 26.1.x or 26.1.2 listings in the April snapshot. Several large content projects—including Create, Farmer’s Delight, Quark, Supplementaries, Mekanism, Ars Nouveau, and Botania—still centered on 1.21.1. Applied Energistics 2 was a notable exception with a 26.1.2 listing as well as 1.21.x support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install all 40 mods together?
No. The list intentionally spans the 26.1.2 Fabric utility lane and the 1.21.1 NeoForge or Forge content lane. Choose one Minecraft version and loader, then build a compatible subset. Some entries also overlap in purpose or change progression in ways that are better tested separately.
Should I use Fabric or NeoForge in April 2026?
Use Fabric with 26.1.2 for performance, shaders, maps, interface utilities, and lightweight vanilla-plus play. Use NeoForge with 1.21.1 when your pack is built around Create, Farmer’s Delight, Quark, Supplementaries, Mekanism, Ars Nouveau, or similar large content systems. For an existing modpack or server, use its exact loader and version.

Are these mods compatible with Minecraft Bedrock Edition?
No. This article covers Java Edition mods. Bedrock uses a separate add-on system based on behavior packs, resource packs, and Marketplace content; a Java .jar mod cannot be installed in Bedrock.
Do performance mods guarantee higher FPS?
No. Sodium and the other rendering or optimization mods can improve performance, but results vary with the CPU, GPU, RAM, render and simulation distance, resource packs, shaders, Java runtime, world, and mod list. Add them one at a time and measure your own setup.
Can I add Terralith to an existing survival world?
It is strongly discouraged. Terralith changes world generation and its project page warns against removing it from an established world. Create a backup and preferably begin a new world when using Terralith or other terrain, structure, biome, cave, or dimension mods.
Why does a mod say that a dependency is missing?
Usually the dependency was not installed, the wrong loader version was downloaded, or the dependency does not match the Minecraft patch. Check the project page for Fabric API, Zeta, Moonlight Library, Curios, Trinkets, Geckolib, Patchouli, Fabric Language Kotlin, or libIPN as applicable. Do not solve the problem by casually overriding version requirements.

The Bottom Line
For most Java players starting in April 2026, the safest first path is 26.1.2 + Fabric + Sodium, with Iris for shaders and Jade, AppleSkin, maps, or inventory utilities added according to need. For Create, technology, farming, magic, or major adventure content, choose a separate 1.21.1 + NeoForge instance and plan its dependencies before creating a world. Keep backups, verify every file’s loader and exact Minecraft version, and treat world-generation and alpha content mods as higher-risk choices.
