The Xbox Live outage described here occurred on Tuesday, July 2, 2024—not in 2026. Xbox Live, which Microsoft also calls the Xbox network, was restored at approximately 5:49–5:50 p.m. Pacific time (8:49–8:50 p.m. Eastern) after roughly six hours and 40 minutes of widespread sign-in problems. Microsoft said users should no longer have trouble signing in, but it did not publicly disclose the incident’s root cause in its contemporaneous updates.

During the incident, Xbox users were signed out, prevented from signing in, or unable to use games, apps, and social features that depended on Xbox authentication. The outage affected far more than a single console model: reports covered Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Xbox on Windows, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox.com, and Xbox services on Android and iOS.

The most important distinction is that this was primarily an Account & Profile and authentication outage, not proof that every Xbox server or every game service went offline at once. A console could still be connected to the internet while Microsoft’s account authentication service was unavailable.

Historical status: Xbox services were broadly restored later on July 2, 2024. If you are checking Xbox connectivity now, use the official Xbox Status page rather than treating this 2024 incident as a current outage.

What happened during the Xbox outage?

Xbox’s status system recorded an Account & Profile problem at approximately 11:07 a.m. PT (2:07 p.m. ET and 7:07 p.m. British Summer Time). The first symptoms included failed sign-ins, unexpected disconnections, and error messages when users tried to access Xbox-connected features.

Microsoft’s Xbox Support account initially acknowledged that some users had been disconnected. Later, Support said that its investigation was taking longer than expected, then posted that users should no longer encounter trouble signing in once the service recovered. The status information and contemporaneous reporting placed the all-clear point at approximately 5:49–5:50 p.m. PT.

From the first recorded status event to the reported restoration, the incident lasted approximately 6 hours and 42–43 minutes. That makes more than six hours or nearly seven hours accurate descriptions. It did not last seven hours exactly.

Xbox outage timeline

Approximate time What happened
11:07 a.m. PT
2:07 p.m. ET
Xbox status information recorded an outage affecting Account & Profile services.
Shortly afterward Players reported sign-in failures, disconnections, and error code 0x87DD0033. The error code came from player reports and secondary coverage rather than a detailed Microsoft technical explanation.
Approximately 12:15–1:15 p.m. PT Xbox Support publicly acknowledged the issue and said the investigation was taking longer than expected.
Approximately 1:53 p.m. PT Status information indicated that Microsoft had encountered a related issue, without publicly identifying what that issue was.
5:49–5:50 p.m. PT
8:49–8:50 p.m. ET
Xbox Support said users should no longer have trouble signing in, and the Xbox Status page was reported as clear.
Later that evening and July 3 Xbox was broadly functional, although recovery was not necessarily simultaneous for every region, account, game, or feature.

The timestamps are approximate because the Xbox status-page event, Support posts, news updates, and individual users’ recovery experiences did not all occur at exactly the same moment. Contemporaneous status reporting placed the initial event at roughly 11:07 a.m. PT, while later reporting recorded the evening restoration.

Not every title behaved identically. A locally installed game with a valid offline license could work, while an online-only game, a cloud-streamed title, or a game waiting for account or entitlement verification could fail to launch.

Why did some offline games stop working?

The outage highlighted a difference that is easy to miss: single-player does not always mean independent of Xbox services.

A game may be designed primarily for solo play but still require one or more online checks. The console may need to verify the account that owns the digital license, confirm a Game Pass entitlement, load a profile, contact a live-service backend, or synchronize cloud data. If that authentication step fails, the game can be blocked even though its main gameplay is offline.

Some players reported being unable to start installed games including Skyrim, Minecraft, Persona 5 Royal, and other titles. Other players were able to play after putting the console into offline mode. These reports do not establish that every physical or digital game was blocked. They show that launch behavior depended on the title, the license, the console’s configuration, and whether the game supported offline play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A disc does not automatically eliminate every dependency, either. A physical copy can still require an update, an online service, account authentication, or a separate license check for some functions. Conversely, an owned digital game can often work offline when the console has been correctly configured and the title supports offline play.

The temporary workaround: put the Xbox console offline

For a locally installed game that supports offline play, the workaround reported during the outage was:

  1. Press the Xbox button on the controller.
  2. Open Profile & system.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Choose General.
  5. Open Network settings.
  6. Select Go offline.
  7. Start a locally installed game that supports offline play.

This could bypass a failed attempt to contact Xbox services for some offline-capable content. It was a player workaround, not a fix for Microsoft’s outage, and it did not work for everyone.

Going offline cannot restore:

  • Online multiplayer
  • Xbox Cloud Gaming
  • Cloud-only games
  • Games that require a live server
  • Online parties, messaging, achievements, or other social functions
  • New downloads or purchases that need Xbox services
  • Titles that cannot complete their account, entitlement, anti-cheat, or server checks

If the console was already struggling to authenticate, repeatedly deleting and re-adding the Xbox profile was a poor first move. Removing the account could create an additional problem: the console might be unable to add it back until Microsoft’s authentication service recovered.

What about Game Pass games?

Game Pass access is license-dependent, so a downloaded Game Pass game is not guaranteed to launch simply because it is installed. Offline access depends on factors such as whether the title supports offline play, whether the console is configured as the account’s Home Xbox, and whether the account and subscription still have the necessary rights.

A Game Pass title can also stop working because the subscription has expired, the game has left the catalog, or the device needs to revalidate the license. A contemporaneous Kotaku report cited a roughly 30-day interval between online checks for downloaded offline Game Pass games, but that figure should be treated as policy-dependent rather than a universal guarantee. Microsoft’s policies and individual game requirements can change.

Changing the console’s Home Xbox setting during an active outage was not a reliable solution. That configuration generally needs successful online authentication. If the console was already correctly configured as the account’s Home Xbox, it could help provide offline access to eligible owned digital games and some shared licenses. It could not make an online-only game playable without its servers.

What should you do if Xbox is restored but you still cannot connect?

Recovery was uneven, so an individual connection problem did not necessarily mean the entire service was still down. Use this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check Xbox Status first. Use the official Xbox Status page. If it still shows an Account & Profile incident, the problem is probably on Microsoft’s side.
  2. Do not make destructive account changes during an outage. Avoid removing the profile, changing Home Xbox settings, or repeatedly attempting license-related changes while authentication is unavailable.
  3. Restart the game. A title that was launched during the outage may need to be closed and opened again after sign-in has returned.
  4. Fully restart the console. A complete console restart is more useful than repeatedly signing out and back in while the service is recovering.
  5. Check another Xbox-connected device. Try the Xbox app or account sign-in on another device to help determine whether the problem affects one console, one game, one account, or Xbox services generally.
  6. Test the local network. If Xbox Status is clear and other devices also have internet problems, restart the router or test another network. There is little value in changing DNS settings or replacing networking equipment while an official Xbox outage is active.
  7. Return the console online. Open Settings > General > Network settings and select the option to reconnect online after services have recovered.

If you played while offline, pay attention when synchronization resumes. Local progress may exist even though it has not reached the cloud. The Xbox Game Development Kit documentation explains that offline sessions can write to local save storage before cloud synchronization occurs. If the console presents a local-versus-cloud save choice, compare the timestamps and do not automatically select an older cloud save if you need to preserve progress made during the outage.

How many people were affected?

Microsoft did not publish a total number of affected customers in the available updates. Public outage trackers measured submitted reports, not the number of unique Xbox users who lost access.

DownDetector reports peaked in the tens of thousands. Depending on the point in the incident and the report being cited, coverage placed the peak at approximately 32,222 to 38,000 reports, with one report saying about 75 percent were categorized as login problems. Those figures indicate the scale of the public disruption, but they should not be rewritten as proof that exactly 32,222 or 38,000 Xbox customers were affected.

Did Microsoft explain what caused the outage?

Not publicly in the contemporaneous updates available for this incident. Microsoft acknowledged the service problem, investigated it, and reported that sign-in access had been restored. It did not identify a specific software defect, configuration change, Azure failure, cyberattack, DDoS attack, or third-party provider as the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There was also no public compensation announcement identified in the cited coverage. Users should not assume that Microsoft offered free Game Pass time, refunds, or another form of compensation unless a separate official announcement says so.

In particular, the July 2 outage should not be attributed to CrowdStrike. A separate global Windows and IT disruption occurred later in July 2024, and subsequent coverage discussed whether that later event affected Xbox. That is not evidence for the July 2 Xbox incident. The available record supports saying that Microsoft resolved the outage without publicly explaining its root cause—not filling the gap with speculation about hackers, DDoS attacks, Azure, or CrowdStrike.

Was it connected to the PlayStation Network outage?

PlayStation Network had experienced a separate outage shortly before the Xbox incident, which made the timing notable for players and news outlets. However, no evidence established that the two events were connected. They should be treated as separate service incidents.

Did the outage affect new game launches?

The Xbox disruption happened on a busy date. The First Descendant released on Xbox, and Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail reached its full launch. The outage also affected people trying to access existing online games and services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That timing does not prove that either launch caused the outage or that the outage specifically prevented either game from launching. No title-specific developer or publisher statement in the available coverage establishes that connection.

Xbox Live or the Xbox network?

Xbox Live remains the familiar historical and consumer-facing name used in searches and older reporting. Microsoft has also used Xbox network as the modern service name after moving away from the Xbox Live branding. Microsoft’s developer documentation uses the Xbox network terminology, but both names refer to the service context discussed here.

For clarity, the precise description is: Xbox Live—officially referred to by Microsoft as the Xbox network—was restored after a major sign-in outage on July 2, 2024.
