The best handheld gaming device depends on your game ecosystem. Nintendo Switch 2 is the best fit for Nintendo exclusives and hybrid TV/handheld play; Steam Deck OLED suits Steam users; ROG Xbox Ally X targets premium Windows and Xbox flexibility; Legion Go S offers a large high-refresh display and OS choice; and PlayStation Portal is primarily a PS5 Remote Play and supported cloud-streaming client.
These are three different product categories, not interchangeable consoles. This guide uses manufacturer specifications and support information rather than independent hands-on testing, so battery life, performance, comfort, heat, noise, and compatibility should be treated accordingly.

The best handheld gaming device depends on where your games come from. Choose the Nintendo Switch 2 for Nintendo exclusives and TV-to-handheld play, the Steam Deck OLED for a relatively console-like SteamOS experience, the ROG Xbox Ally X for premium Windows and Xbox flexibility, or the Lenovo Legion Go S for a large 120Hz screen and a choice of Windows or SteamOS. Choose the PlayStation Portal only if you already own a PS5 or specifically want supported PlayStation cloud streaming: it is a network-dependent remote-play and cloud-streaming client, not a conventional standalone console.

First, understand the three types of handheld gaming devices
Handheld gaming console is now an umbrella term for products with very different access models:
| Category | How games run | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Native or hybrid console | Games run locally on dedicated console hardware. | The simplest experience, with a curated platform ecosystem. Nintendo Switch 2 can also connect to a television and operate in tabletop mode. |
| Handheld gaming PC | Games run locally through an operating system such as SteamOS or Windows. | You get more storefront and configuration freedom, but compatibility, launcher behavior, controls, and setup can vary from game to game. |
| Streaming or remote-play client | The device receives a game stream from a PS5 or a cloud service. | It can be excellent for playing away from the main screen, but network quality and service eligibility matter more than local hardware performance. |
That distinction is why a Portal should not be compared with a Switch 2 as though both were self-contained consoles. It also explains why a Steam Deck OLED, ROG Xbox Ally X, and Legion Go S may require more setup than a dedicated console even though all three are portable.

1. Nintendo Switch 2: best for Nintendo games and hybrid play
Choose it if: you want Nintendo’s first-party software, local multiplayer, and a device that moves easily between handheld, tabletop, and television play.
Nintendo Switch 2 launched in the United States on June 5, 2025, with a suggested retail price of $449.99. Nintendo also announced a $499.99 bundle with Mario Kart World. Its dedicated software ecosystem is the reason to buy it: this is the most straightforward choice for readers who specifically want Nintendo games rather than access to a general PC library.
Important specifications
- 7.9-inch 1920×1080 LCD display
- HDR10 support and variable refresh rate up to 120Hz
- 256GB of UFS internal storage
- Wi-Fi 6
- Manufacturer battery estimate of approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the game
- Support for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch game cards
Switch 2 also introduces Joy-Con 2 controllers with mouse functionality in compatible games. That is a platform feature rather than a universal control method, so it should not be assumed to work in every title.
The storage caveat many buyers miss
Switch 2 requires microSD Express cards for game-storage expansion. Older, non-Express microSD cards are limited to copying screenshots and videos; they are not a substitute for a compatible game-storage card. Check the exact card standard before buying.
For protection and expansion, a Nintendo Switch 2 carrying case, screen protector, and Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express card are the most directly relevant accessories. Confirm that a case is made for Switch 2 rather than the original Switch, and confirm the memory card is microSD Express.
Why Switch 2 is the right choice
It offers the clearest console experience in this group and avoids the storefront management associated with Windows handhelds. It is also the best fit for households that want local multiplayer or television play as part of the purchase.
The trade-off is flexibility. You are buying into Nintendo’s hardware and software ecosystem rather than getting the broad storefront options of a Windows PC. The published 2–6.5-hour battery figure is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed runtime for every game.
Rank #2
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
2. Steam Deck OLED: best for SteamOS and a Steam library
Choose it if: most of your PC games are on Steam and you want a handheld interface designed around that library rather than a Windows desktop.
The Steam Deck OLED runs SteamOS 3 and is built around local PC gaming through Steam. Its 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED display, trackpads, assignable rear grip buttons, and gyro give it a control and interface identity that differs from a conventional console.
Important specifications
- 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED display
- Refresh rate up to 90Hz
- 512GB or 1TB NVMe storage options
- 50Wh battery
- Wi-Fi 6E
- High-speed microSD expansion slot
- Valve-listed gameplay estimate of approximately 3–12 hours, depending on content
Valve identifies the OLED models as lighter and more efficient than the LCD version. It also describes a claimed 30–50% battery-life improvement over the LCD model. That is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent test result, and actual runtime depends on the title, brightness, frame-rate settings, power profile, and other variables.
Compatibility is not the same as a closed-console guarantee
Steam Deck is more console-like than a typical Windows handheld, but it remains a PC. Steam games can have different compatibility statuses, control layouts, anti-cheat behavior, launcher requirements, or performance characteristics. Some games may need configuration, and some PC features may not work the same way as they do in Windows. The fact that a game is sold on Steam does not by itself promise a perfect handheld experience.
For the practical setup, a Steam Deck USB-C dock, compatible microSD card, carrying case, screen protector, charger, or headset can be useful. Check the dock’s display and power capabilities and the accessory’s fit before purchase; third-party accessories should not be assumed to be Valve-certified.

The supplied price research does not provide a verified 2025 US price for the OLED models. A later pricing update dated May 27, 2026 lists the 512GB OLED model at $789 and the 1TB OLED model at $949. Those figures are a later verification note, not 2025 launch prices, and should be checked again before publication or purchase.
3. ROG Xbox Ally X (2025): best for premium Windows and Xbox flexibility
Choose it if: you want a high-end Windows handheld with Xbox integration, access to PC storefronts, and a large battery capacity—and you are willing to pay for a more PC-like experience.
ASUS lists the ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) at a US starting price of $999.99. Its hardware is aimed at buyers who want more than a single storefront: it combines Windows 11 Home with Xbox integration, PC game access, and a full-screen Xbox experience.
Important specifications
- Windows 11 Home
- AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor with integrated Radeon graphics
- 24GB of LPDDR5X memory
- 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage
- 7-inch 1920×1080 120Hz display
- 80Wh battery
- Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4
ASUS describes a redesigned ergonomic chassis and emphasizes Xbox integration. Windows also brings the advantages and burdens of a general-purpose PC: multiple launchers and storefronts can be available, but setup, updates, controller mapping, and desktop interaction may require more attention than on a closed console or SteamOS device. That is a platform characteristic, not a claim of independent hands-on testing.

Read the battery claim in context
ASUS’s product information describes an up to 2X battery-life comparison against the previous-generation ROG Ally X. The stated comparison uses Hollow Knight: Silksong at 720p, a 60fps limit, low graphics, and Silent Mode. It should not be rewritten as a general guarantee that the device lasts twice as long in every game or power mode.
Rank #3
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Useful add-ons include an ROG Xbox Ally X case, a compatible USB-C dock, a charger that meets the exact model’s power requirements, and a headset. Confirm the physical fit, port arrangement, and charger specification for the exact configuration—particularly if a listing refers to an RC73XA model—before ordering.
Who should skip it
Skip it if your priority is the least complicated console interface or if you only want one tightly integrated library. The premium price makes more sense for buyers who will actually use Windows, Xbox, Game Pass integration, and multiple PC storefronts.
4. Lenovo Legion Go S: best for a large, fast screen and configuration choice
Choose it if: screen size and refresh rate matter more to you than having one standardized configuration, or if you want to choose between Windows and SteamOS.
The Legion Go S is a product family rather than a single set of specifications. Lenovo offers Windows and SteamOS configurations, and the processor, memory, storage, operating system, and price can differ by model. Always identify the exact configuration in a listing before comparing it with another Legion Go S.
Published features
Lenovo’s current US product information for a SteamOS model lists an AMD Ryzen Z2 GO processor, 16GB of LPDDR5X memory, 512GB of PCIe Gen4 SSD storage, and an 8-inch 1920×1200 120Hz touchscreen. It also lists Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
The Gen 1 family is described with a 55.5Wh battery and bundled 65W adapter. The family’s published hardware features include adjustable trigger switches, Hall-effect joysticks on relevant configurations, two USB4 ports, and the large 16:10 display.
Announcement-era US pricing
At CES 2025, Lenovo announced expected US starting prices of $729.99 for an initial Windows configuration, $599.99 for additional configurations, and $499.99 for the SteamOS version. These were announcement-era expected prices, not a guarantee of current stock or final configuration-specific pricing.
A Legion Go S screen protector, carrying case, USB-C dock, charger, and storage accessory can make sense, but the exact model matters. A case or protector designed for a different Legion device may not fit, and a charger or dock should be checked against the model’s ports and power requirements.
Windows or SteamOS?
Windows is the more flexible choice for readers who need Windows-specific games, launchers, or software. SteamOS is the more focused choice for readers who primarily want a Steam-centered interface. Neither option makes every game identical to a console release; the operating system changes the setup and compatibility trade-offs.
5. PlayStation Portal: best for PS5 Remote Play, not standalone gaming
Choose it if: you already have a PS5 and want to play compatible games away from the television, or you meet the requirements for supported PlayStation cloud streaming.
PlayStation Portal is a remote player. For its central Remote Play use case, it streams compatible games installed on a PS5 over Wi-Fi. A PS5 console and PlayStation account are required. It does not locally install and run PS5 games in the way a Switch 2 or handheld gaming PC runs local software.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- 8-inch full-HD screen
- Up to 60fps at 1080p
- DualSense-style haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in supported games
- Remote Play requires broadband Wi-Fi with at least 5 Mbps
- Sony recommends 15 Mbps or more for a better Remote Play experience
Remote Play quality depends on the network between the Portal and the PS5, as well as the network environment around the console and handheld. A fast internet plan alone does not guarantee a good result if Wi-Fi coverage, congestion, latency, or the PS5’s setup is poor.
Cloud streaming is available only under specific conditions
Sony also supports cloud streaming on Portal for eligible PlayStation Plus Premium members. The feature is limited to supported PS5 games, eligible accounts, and supported countries or regions; Sony’s current documentation lists the United States among supported countries. The available catalog can include selected games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, along with select digital PS5 games in the user’s library.
Availability varies by region, game, account, and time. A PlayStation Plus Premium subscription does not mean that every PS5 game can be streamed to Portal, and Portal cloud access should not be treated as a replacement for owning a PS5 without checking the specific game and account requirements.
Natural accessories include a PlayStation Portal case, screen protection, and compatible PlayStation Link audio products such as wireless earbuds. These accessories improve portability or audio convenience; they do not change Portal’s network-dependent operating model.

Prices in this category move quickly, and the figures below are not all the same type of price. The table separates US MSRP, manufacturer starting price, announcement estimate, and a later verification note.
| Device | US price information in the supplied research | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | $449.99 suggested retail price at US launch on June 5, 2025; $499.99 Mario Kart World bundle announced | Launch-era 2025 pricing; retailer pricing and stock may differ |
| Steam Deck OLED | No verified 2025 price supplied; May 27, 2026 update lists $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB | The 2026 figures are later verification notes, not 2025 prices |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | $999.99 US starting price | Manufacturer-listed starting price for the 2025 model |
| Lenovo Legion Go S | CES 2025 expected starting prices: $729.99 initial Windows, $599.99 additional configurations, $499.99 SteamOS | Announcement-era estimates; verify the exact model and current availability |
| PlayStation Portal | No price stated in the supplied research | Check the current US listing and retailer stock rather than relying on an unsourced figure |
Do not compare these numbers as though they represent identical configurations. Storage, operating system, bundle contents, retailer discounts, and whether a price is an MSRP or an announcement estimate can change the value calculation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you buy?
- Buy Nintendo Switch 2 if Nintendo exclusives, local multiplayer, and TV-to-handheld flexibility are your priorities. Budget for a compatible microSD Express card if 256GB is not enough.
- Buy Steam Deck OLED if your existing library is mainly on Steam and you prefer SteamOS, an OLED display, integrated trackpads, gyro, and rear controls. Check the compatibility of your most-played games before committing.
- Buy ROG Xbox Ally X if you want a premium Windows handheld, Xbox integration, multiple PC storefronts, 24GB of memory, and an 80Wh battery. Accept that Windows can involve more setup than a console interface.
- Buy Lenovo Legion Go S if an 8-inch 120Hz screen is especially important or you want a choice between Windows and SteamOS. Compare the exact processor, memory, storage, operating system, and price—not just the family name.
- Buy PlayStation Portal only when you already have a PS5 for Remote Play or have verified that your PlayStation Plus Premium account, region, and games qualify for cloud streaming.
Accessories worth considering
Accessories should solve a specific limitation rather than be added automatically:
- Storage: Switch 2 needs microSD Express for game expansion. Steam Deck OLED and Legion Go S support microSD expansion, but confirm the card, speed, and capacity against the exact device.
- Docks: A USB-C dock can make a handheld PC more useful at a desk or television, but check display output, USB ports, charging passthrough, and power requirements. Lenovo’s Legion Go S family includes two USB4 ports; Valve and Lenovo document USB-C/display and microSD expansion capabilities for their respective devices.
- Chargers: Use a compatible USB-C charger with sufficient power for the specific handheld. A charger that works for a phone is not automatically suitable for a gaming PC under load.
- Protection: Cases and screen protectors must match the exact model. Switch 2, Steam Deck OLED, Legion Go S, ROG Xbox Ally X, and Portal have different shapes and controls.
- Audio: A wired or low-latency gaming headset is useful for handheld play. Portal buyers should separately check compatibility with PlayStation Link products and other audio options.
