For a mobile game web shop to make sense to players, it needs to offer a clear benefit, make every step—including getting purchases back into the game—easy, fit naturally into the game, adapt to player context, and improve through ongoing testing. Those were the five practices discussed by Electronic Arts and Xsolla representatives at GamesBeat Next, as reported by GamesBeat on November 7, 2024, with an update on June 18, 2025. They are practitioner recommendations, not proven guarantees of higher revenue.
Why a web shop needs to earn the extra step
A web shop asks players to leave the game to browse or pay, then return to use what they bought. That detour creates work the in-game store does not: explaining why the web destination is worthwhile, helping players authenticate and check out, and reliably fulfilling purchases back in the game.
At the GamesBeat Next discussion, Danny Moy of Electronic Arts described that departure as a source of friction: “There’s naturally some friction when you ask a user to leave the app to pay or take any kind of action, go outside the app to do a payment or perform some type of action, Moy said, so being clear about the value prop is key here.” The panel’s five recommendations address the full journey rather than checkout alone. GamesBeat’s report presents these as practitioner guidance; it does not establish a controlled revenue or retention effect.
1. Give players a clear reason to use the shop
Players need to understand what they get by leaving the game. The panel’s examples included exclusive items, larger bundles, and direct relationships with customer-support staff or VIP hosts. The right offer depends on the game and its audience; the point is to make the benefit legible before asking for another login or payment step.

A useful design check is whether the player can answer, “Why should I use this shop instead of the store I already know?” If the only answer is that the same purchase is available elsewhere, the web journey has not yet made its value clear.
2. Reduce friction from authentication through fulfillment
Friction does not end when payment succeeds. The player must authenticate, find the intended product, complete checkout, and see the purchased currency or item appear in the correct game account. If fulfillment is delayed or confusing, a successful transaction can still feel like a failed experience.
Moy captured the handoff problem with a player’s likely question: “I just purchased a bunch of coins, a bunch of items. How do I get that to sync back into the game with as little friction as possible?” That makes entitlement delivery and account matching part of the purchase journey, not an afterthought.

The panel also discussed rewarding progress through the funnel. Manish Tiwari said: “If the player is willing to go through that friction, they’ll be rewarded adequately for doing the first authentication, logging into the web store, making the first purchase and making a repeat purchase,” he said. This is a proposed way to recognize player effort, not quantified evidence that rewards offset friction. Teams should ensure any reward is clear, correctly granted, and consistent with applicable platform rules.

A shop that feels like an unrelated website can be harder to discover and understand. Moy’s advice was direct: “Don’t treat it as something separate or something on the side. Treat it as a part of your game,” he said. In practice, that means considering how players encounter the shop, understand its offers, and return to play after a transaction.
Communication has constraints: mobile-platform terms can affect how a developer may direct players to external purchasing. Rules and payment options can vary by platform, market, and date, so teams should verify current requirements rather than assume a particular message or flow is permitted everywhere.

4. Tailor the storefront to the player
A single presentation may not serve a new player, a long-time player, and a high-status player equally well. The panel recommended tailoring the shop to player behavior, experience, level, or status instead of presenting everyone with the same storefront.
Personalization should make relevant choices easier to find, not make the shop opaque. Offers and navigation should remain understandable, and teams need to consider whether the data used to shape the experience is available and appropriate for their implementation.

Moy framed a web shop as a live-operated product rather than a one-time build: “If you take a step back, especially in free-to-play mobile games, it’s all about optimization, A/B testing and tuning,” he said. Teams can use experiments and ongoing tuning to evaluate presentation, offers, and journey steps as the game changes.

That advice does not establish that any particular test will improve revenue. A useful operating practice is to define the question and success measure before an experiment, change a manageable part of the experience, and review whether results support keeping the change. The panel report does not supply independent conversion benchmarks or a quantified causal lift for these practices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess an implementation
For teams considering a web shop, these five ideas can be turned into a practical review of the player journey:
- Player benefit: Is there a specific, easy-to-understand reason to visit the web shop?
- Effort: How much work do first-time authentication, checkout, and repeat purchases require?
- Fulfillment: Do purchases reliably reach the right game account, and is the player told what to expect?
- Integration: Does the experience feel connected to the game and reflect relevant player context?
- Measurement: Can the team evaluate changes and continue tuning the shop over time?
These are assessment questions, not a scorecard with evidence-backed thresholds. The GamesBeat panel offered no controlled comparison showing which practice matters most or how much revenue or retention any of them can add.

What current product material does—and does not—show
Xsolla describes its Web Shop as a way for mobile-game developers to sell items, virtual currency, and subscriptions through a web storefront. Its Mobile SDK quick start covers setting up authentication, importing SKUs, and processing a test payment. Those vendor materials can help a team understand a possible implementation path; they do not independently validate the panel’s business recommendations. Confirm current service features, SDK details, platform rules, and availability in the relevant jurisdictions before choosing an approach.
Xsolla’s July 15, 2026 summary of its report says mobile gaming market growth was 0.2% in 2025 and direct-to-consumer revenue growth was 26% in 2025. These are figures reported by Xsolla; the material cited here does not establish an independent underlying dataset or methodology, so they should not be read as proof that web shops caused the reported growth. Xsolla’s summary provides the vendor context.
