1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA re-release earns “definitive” status when it improves how a game looks, sounds or plays without losing what made the original work. These five examples show why that can mean sharper presentation, more flexible controls or a more complete package—not simply newer graphics. One entry is an older collection, and one closely related release is a remake rather than a strict remaster, so those distinctions matter when choosing what to play.
What makes a remaster the definitive version?
There is no single technical test for “definitive.” A useful version should preserve the original’s design and atmosphere while making it more pleasant or practical to play today. The relevant questions are whether visual and audio upgrades suit the game, whether control or accessibility options help without changing its identity, what content is included, and whether the edition is available on a platform you can use.
Publisher descriptions establish what a release contains, but they do not prove universal critical consensus. The selections below are notable, well-documented cases rather than an objective ranking.
Five remasters and collections worth considering
1. Metroid Prime Remastered
Nintendo describes Metroid Prime Remastered as an HD remaster of the GameCube original. Its visual and sound enhancements are paired with dual-stick controls, making aiming more familiar to players used to modern first-person games. Nintendo’s guide also lists other control configurations and a Casual difficulty option, while saying the original atmosphere is retained.

- Updated and reconstructed visuals to be far more realistic and richly textured vs the original game
- Upgraded models for each character, graphical updates for a more immersive environment
- Estimated gameplay hours: 40 to 50 per title
- Sound: Players will be able to choose between original sound and the new, re-arranged sound
Those changes suit the game’s structure. On Tallon IV, exploration, scanning and backtracking are central to progression; clearer presentation and more flexible aiming can support that design rather than replace it. The remaster also includes unlockable gallery content.
One practical difference remains: there is no auto-save. Save at a Save Station or your gunship, or progress since the last save can be lost. Nintendo confirms a physical release, but current stock and pricing are not established here.

2. Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the strongest example here of a remaster becoming definitive through completeness. EA says the collection includes the single-player base content for Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, plus over 40 DLC items, and is optimized for 4K Ultra HD.
BioWare explicitly framed the work as modernization rather than reinvention: “Our goal was not to remake or reimagine the original games, but to modernize the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible form,” the studio said in its official announcement.
Rank #3
- Graphics remastered in beautiful high-definition
- Two brand-new minigames
- Featuring music by Revo of Linked Horizon
- Redesigned UI for a single screen
- Quality of life upgrades: fast-forward, encounter rate settings, upgraded online compatibility for modern networks
EA’s release quoted Mac Walters, the Legendary Edition project director and original trilogy lead writer, on the scale of the collection: “Remastering a game, let alone three, is a huge undertaking as there’s over 100 hours of gameplay included, but we wanted to do this for our fans as well as a new generation of gamers looking to jump into the iconic story of Shepard.” That makes the edition an especially convenient way to experience the trilogy and its included DLC as a unified package.
3. ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection (PS3)
Sony’s 2011 announcement described this Blu-ray collection as including HD and 3D versions of both games. Its listed specifications were full 1080p HD, stereoscopic 3D and 7.1 surround sound; the disc also included trophies and behind-the-scenes bonus material.

It is a meaningful preservation of two influential PlayStation games, especially for players who value the extras and original releases in one package. It is also a legacy PS3 physical edition: the cited announcement does not establish current availability, so check local listings rather than assuming it is easy to find.
4. The PS4 Shadow of the Colossus is a remake, not a remaster
The PS4 release belongs in any conversation about definitive reissues, but it should not be mislabeled. PlayStation says Bluepoint Games and JAPAN Studio rebuilt it from the ground up. In a PlayStation Blog interview, Bluepoint president Marco Thrush clarified: “With Shadow of the Colossus we’re working on a remake – it’s not really a remaster.”
Best Value
- Includes all expansions and updates in one definitive edition
- Smoother, more responsive combat
- Modern UI and full controller support
- Enhanced textures, lighting effects, and view distance enhanced textures, lighting effects, and view distance
- Community-driven fixes and improved stability
That distinction is useful when shopping or discussing editions: a remaster typically updates an existing game, while a ground-up rebuild crosses into remake territory. The PS4 version may be the edition to seek for modern presentation, but it is not evidence of a strict remaster.
5. A practical way to choose among them
These releases answer different needs rather than competing on one scale:
- For modern controls and preserved exploration: Metroid Prime Remastered is the clearest example, provided you are comfortable with manual saving.
- For a complete story package: Mass Effect Legendary Edition brings three single-player campaigns and over 40 DLC items together.
- For a classic physical collection: the PS3 ICO & Shadow of the Colossus set has documented HD, 3D, audio and bonus features, but availability needs checking.
- For a ground-up visual rebuild: consider the PS4 Shadow of the Colossus as a remake, not as a remaster.
The best version depends on the original game’s appeal: choose a release that improves access or presentation while keeping the qualities you want to experience intact.
