What it does show is how easily a memorable award-year moment can be mistaken for lasting cultural attention. Here are five past winners worth revisiting, with the award body and year made explicit—and the limits of the “forgotten” label kept in view.
What “Game of the Year” means here
Game of the Year is awarded by multiple organizations, not a single industry-wide authority. The Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCA) describes its honor as recognizing “the choice of game developers for the overall best game release.” The D.I.C.E. Awards are a separate program run by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS). A win therefore needs its awarding body and year attached; it is not a universal verdict.

“Everyone quickly forgot” is a provocative premise, not a measured finding. The available sources establish award results and some contemporary recognition, but do not measure public recall, later player counts, sales decline, online conversation, or cultural memory. The five examples below are former winners that can prompt a useful retrospective; they are not a proven ranking of forgotten games.

Five former winners—and what the record supports
1. Dragon Age: Inquisition — 2014 D.I.C.E. Game of the Year
AIAS named Dragon Age: Inquisition its 2014 D.I.C.E. Game of the Year. TIME also included it on its 2014 best-games list, providing a dated sign of contemporary attention. Those records make the game a recognizable former winner, but they do not tell us whether players later forgot it.
#1 Best Overall

2. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor — 2014 Game Developers Choice Award
The GDCA archive lists Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor as its 2014 Game of the Year winner. It also received substantial recognition at launch: AIAS reports that it won eight of its nine D.I.C.E. nominations, and TIME included it among its best games of 2014, pointing to its organized enemy hierarchy and combat. That is strong evidence of contemporary visibility—not of subsequent obscurity.

3. Journey — 2012 Game Developers Choice Award
Journey won the GDCA’s 2012 Game of the Year award. That official record is enough to establish its place among former winners. The sources available here do not establish whether its public recognition later declined, so calling it forgotten would go beyond the evidence.

4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — 2017 D.I.C.E. Game of the Year
AIAS identifies The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as the 2017 D.I.C.E. Game of the Year winner and reports that it received four awards. Those results establish the scale of its recognition at that ceremony, not a later loss of public memory. Including it in a list of games that “everyone quickly forgot” would require specific evidence the award record does not provide.

5. Untitled Goose Game — 2019 Game Developers Choice Award
The GDCA archive lists Untitled Goose Game as its 2019 Game of the Year winner. Its relatively recent win makes the claim that it was “quickly” forgotten especially dependent on a defined time frame and later evidence. The award archive confirms the win; it does not establish how well-known the game remains.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge whether a winner was actually forgotten
An award and a contemporary best-games list tell us what drew recognition at a particular moment. To make a defensible claim about what happened afterward, a retrospective would need comparable later evidence for each game—for example, dated records of ports or remasters, franchise activity, official retrospectives, or reliable player and community data. Even then, those measures describe different kinds of visibility; a game can have an active player base without being widely discussed, or remain culturally familiar without new releases.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
That distinction matters for this group. The cited records document awards for all five, and contemporary coverage for two of them. They do not provide the later, title-by-title evidence needed to conclude that any one of these games was broadly forgotten. The honest answer to “Which former winner seems forgettable?” is therefore subjective unless the speaker defines what counts as forgetting and supports the choice with evidence.
