The strongest open-world space games offer very different kinds of exploration: a seemingly endless procedural galaxy, a role-playing adventure among planets, a pilot’s simulation, or a small solar system full of secrets. This shortlist includes five games supported by the available game-specific information—not eight—and treats “best” as a set of recommendations by play style, not an objective or play-tested ranking.
How to choose an open-world space game
“Open world” can mean a seamless-feeling procedural galaxy, a collection of handcrafted regions, or a compact system you can explore in depth. The games below are organized by the kind of experience they emphasize. Use the comparison to distinguish discovery, RPG progression, piloting, mystery, and combat before choosing.

1. No Man’s Sky: best for open-universe discovery and survival
If your idea of a space exploration game is to land on unfamiliar worlds, look for unusual life and terrain, and keep moving toward another star, No Man’s Sky is the most direct fit here. Hello Games describes it as a game about exploration and survival in an “infinite procedurally generated galaxy.” The developer’s official press kit also highlights planetary-to-stellar travel, creature and formation discovery, ship and equipment upgrades, shared discoveries, cross-play, cross-save, and VR.

That procedural scale is the draw: this is a galaxy sandbox, rather than a compact set of hand-authored destinations. Survival and upgrades are part of the loop, so it is not exclusively a quiet sightseeing experience. The official factsheet lists PC, Steam Deck, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and VR options; editions and availability can vary by region and platform, so check the current listing for the version you want.
#1 Best Overall
- Encounters expansion included: encounters is the first major expansion for ever space, enriching the game world with new story characters and quest lines, a brand-new player ship, freighter-loads of novel equipment, additional enemies, and much more.
- The sound of ever space: this original soundtrack contains more than 60 tracks, adding up to a duration of over three hours in total.
- Enhance your home screen with animated wallpapers, epic background music as well as custom icons and sounds.
2. Starfield: best for a space-set RPG with ships and planet exploration
Choose Starfield if you want space exploration tied to character progression and a role-playing structure. The game’s spaces include planets, spacecraft, cities, bases, and wild landscapes. Xbox’s official game page emphasizes that mix, while GamesRadar+ describes spacecraft customization, companions, and skills that affect both spaceflight and planetary exploration.
It is not the same proposition as a seamless, procedural galaxy sandbox: its appeal is the combination of spacefaring with an RPG’s characters, skills, and authored destinations. GamesRadar+ lists PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 in its 2026 article. Because platform availability can change, consult the live store page for the platform and region you plan to use.
3. Elite Dangerous: best for piloting and spaceflight simulation
Elite Dangerous is the pick for players who want the act of flying and managing a spacecraft to be central. Space.com classifies it as a spaceflight simulation MMO and notes its large universe, ship management, and on-foot exploration and combat. That combination makes it a different kind of open-world space game from an exploration-first survival sandbox or a character-led RPG.

Its scale is broad, but the available platform information needs caution: Space.com lists PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and that list may reflect the article’s publication era rather than current support. Confirm supported platforms directly before buying or returning to the game.

Outer Wilds is an exploration adventure built around a small, handcrafted solar system whose planets hold clues to a central mystery. That makes it a strong choice if you want discovery to drive the experience, but it is not a conventional galaxy-scale open world. Its compactness is the point: rather than surveying a vast procedural universe, you investigate a tightly designed set of places and how their secrets connect.
Space.com includes it among space games, but the cited information does not establish platform details here. Check the current store listing for your device.

5. EVERSPACE 2: best for handcrafted regions, combat, and loot progression
EVERSPACE 2 is a single-player open-world RPG with looter-shooter elements, not a spaceflight simulator. ROCKFISH Games describes exploration across more than 100 persistent, handcrafted locations in six stellar systems, with ship combat, crafting, and mining. This is the fit for players who want a structured action loop and distinct regions rather than an endless procedural galaxy.

The developer’s FAQ estimates around 30–40 gameplay hours for the story and around 80–90 hours for completion-focused play. These are ROCKFISH’s estimates, not independently measured averages; play time depends on how much of the optional content you pursue.
Which game fits your kind of space exploration?
- For broad procedural discovery and survival: No Man’s Sky.
- For an RPG built around characters, skills, ships, and planetary destinations: Starfield.
- For piloting and simulation first: Elite Dangerous.
- For a smaller, handcrafted mystery: Outer Wilds.
- For combat, loot, and handcrafted regions in a single-player RPG: EVERSPACE 2.
These five recommendations cover distinct interpretations of “open world.” The available evidence supports these entries, but not eight responsible, game-specific picks; adding three merely to meet the number would risk recommending games without comparable support.
