ASUS lists it at 678 g—70 g heavier than the original. Pre-announcement leak coverage appeared on May 24, 2024; ASUS officially announced the RC72LA on June 2, 2024, confirming the broad upgrade package.
What the ROG Ally X leak said—and what ASUS later confirmed
A May 24, 2024 ETA PRIME video was indexed with leak framing that mentioned a larger battery, a RAM upgrade and USB4. That establishes that these claims circulated before launch, but not who first leaked them or whether every pre-release detail was accurate. ASUS announced the ROG Ally X on June 2, 2024; its announcement confirmed the broad changes to battery, memory, storage, connectivity and cooling. ASUS did not identify or validate a particular leak or leaker.

Why the Ally X is heavier
At 678 g, the Ally X weighs 70 g more than the original ROG Ally, based on ASUS’s published comparison. ASUS links the increase to the upgraded design and says the weight is centered around the grips. That is ASUS’s ergonomic characterization, not an independent comfort assessment.
The extra weight comes alongside a larger 80 Wh battery and a revised chassis. ASUS says the battery doubles the previous model’s capacity, but watt-hours measure stored energy—not how many hours a particular game will run. The available specifications do not establish real-world runtime.

What changed beyond memory, storage and battery
USB-C connectivity
The XG Mobile connector is gone, replaced by two USB-C ports. ASUS describes one as Thunderbolt-compatible; its global specification page identifies USB4 with Thunderbolt 4 compliance. The other is USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C. Check the specifications of a dock or other accessory before relying on compatibility.

Controls and cooling
ASUS describes revised joystick modules, a redesigned D-pad, new fans and a third exhaust vent. It rates the joystick modules for a 5-million-cycle lifespan and says the redesign moves 24% more air; ASUS also claims the panel can be up to 6°C cooler to the touch. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independently verified durability, airflow or temperature measurements.

What stayed the same—and what the specifications cannot tell you
The central performance platform did not change from the original Ally: ASUS says the 2024 X retains the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme. The available specifications therefore establish component and design changes, not a measured performance uplift. They also do not establish battery hours, in-game temperatures, fan noise or comfort in extended play.
ASUS’s launch announcement and global specification page are the best references for the published configuration: ASUS’s June 2, 2024 ROG Ally X announcement and the ROG Ally X (2024) specifications. The pre-announcement leak framing appeared in an ETA PRIME video indexed May 24, 2024; its available listing does not establish the leak’s provenance.
