Black Ops 7 may be a poor fit if what you want from Call of Duty is a self-contained, mostly linear story campaign built for solo play. Its campaign supports solo play, but it is framed around co-op, requires an internet connection, and mixes familiar set pieces with large-area objectives and surreal encounters. Those choices are not a universal verdict on the game: they are specific reasons traditional campaign fans may come away disappointed.
1. The campaign is built around co-op, even when you play alone
Activision says Black Ops 7’s campaign can be played solo or with up to three other players, making four players the maximum. The publisher describes it as a co-op campaign, not simply a solo story with optional multiplayer added on. (Activision’s reveal)

That distinction may matter if you want missions paced around one protagonist and one player’s decisions. Windows Central reported that solo play has no AI teammates and that some objectives feel designed for a four-player group. That is a reviewer’s launch-era assessment, not a claim that every mission requires a full squad, but it points to a possible mismatch: solo is supported, yet may not feel like the campaign’s primary design target. (Windows Central)
2. You cannot take the campaign offline
Activision says a continuous internet connection is required for every mode, including Campaign, because the game uses texture streaming. (Activision’s editions and requirements page)

For a player with unreliable broadband, a connection outage can therefore block access to the story even when playing solo. The stated requirement does not establish an offline mode or workaround, so this is a real access constraint for anyone who expects to play away from a stable connection.
3. Reported solo-play interruptions could make a long mission frustrating
Windows Central reported several solo-play inconveniences in its launch-era review: players could not pause, inactivity could remove them from a session, updates could send them back to the main menu, and being forced out meant restarting a mission because checkpoints did not persist across sessions. These are the outlet’s observations at review time; later updates may change how the game behaves. (Windows Central)

Together, those reports describe a campaign that may be less accommodating than a conventional single-player game. A pause button and resumable checkpoints are especially useful when a campaign session is interrupted by ordinary life, not just a technical failure.
4. Its psychological, surreal story may not match what you want from Black Ops
Black Ops 7 takes a psychological and surreal direction that may divide players looking for a more grounded military thriller. PC Gamer called the premise confusing and criticized aspects of the encounters and production. GamesRadar+ also criticized the story and argued that the game’s unusual vision can clash with player expectations, while acknowledging that the developers had a clear creative vision. These are critical opinions, not evidence of a universal player response. (PC Gamer; GamesRadar+)

- Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower.
- This is signature Black Ops across a cinematic single-player Campaign, a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, and the epic return of Round-Based Zombies.
- The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.
- In a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, players will test their skills across 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 Strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.
- Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
If you enjoy Call of Duty most when its stakes and conflicts feel like a relatively grounded action thriller, hallucinations and psychological turns may feel like a detour rather than a welcome evolution. Players who want a bolder, less literal story could respond very differently.
5. The mission rhythm is not just a string of familiar set pieces
GamesRadar+ describes a campaign that moves among conventional set-piece missions, objective-focused scrambles across large Avalon maps, hallucination sequences, and boss fights. PC Gamer likewise argues that familiar campaign conventions are missing. (GamesRadar+; PC Gamer)

That variety may be appealing if you want the campaign to change its scale and texture. It may disappoint if your preferred Call of Duty rhythm is a tightly directed sequence of linear missions, clear objectives, and cinematic set pieces. Large-area objective play and surreal boss encounters ask for a different kind of patience than a straightforward run of escalating action scenes.

Activision says Endgame opens after the first 11 co-op campaign missions. It continues in Avalon as a replayable campaign mode. (Activision’s Endgame overview)

- MADE FOR CALL OF DUTY - Officially-licensed Black Ops 7 design
- EXCLUSIVE SINPER CASE - Holds Performance thumbsticks and Precision Rings
- INCLUDES IN-GAME ITEM - Comes with in-game weapon charm for Call of Duty Black Ops 7
- PERFECT FOR FPS GAMES - Mixed-rise thumbsticks upgrade your aim and control
- GET MORE CONTROL - Mid-rise left stick upgrades grip and movement
That structure is relevant if you are deciding whether the campaign offers only a fixed story run or a mode to return to afterward. It does not, by itself, resolve the solo-play concerns above or make Endgame a substitute for a traditional linear campaign; its appeal depends on whether you want a replayable Avalon experience.
Who is most likely to be disappointed?
The risk is highest for players who want a self-contained story that works comfortably offline, pauses and resumes cleanly, and keeps its focus on solo-friendly linear action. Players open to co-op-oriented objectives, an always-online requirement, a surreal narrative, and a mix of large-map tasks and boss fights may find the campaign’s ambitions more appealing. Individual reviews differ in tone, and neither reviewer opinion nor a player discussion asking “What do you think of the campaign so far?” establishes a broad consensus.
