Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 makes a strong case for being the series’ best multiplayer-led package in years: its fast, flexible movement is a standout, and round-based Zombies returns alongside a substantial multiplayer offering. But the praise depends on what you play. PC Gamer’s 2024 review found the campaign tedious, while other critics praised the game as a whole. The result is a rewarding choice for multiplayer and Zombies fans, but a less certain recommendation if the campaign is your main reason to play.
What is in Black Ops 6?
Released on October 25, 2024, Black Ops 6 was developed by Treyarch and Raven Software. Its three pillars are a single-player Campaign, competitive Multiplayer, and round-based Zombies. The game launched on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC through Microsoft Store, Steam, and Battle.net. Activision’s product page lists those platforms and notes Game Pass availability subject to subscription; that launch-era listing does not establish the current catalog, plan, or regional availability.
Multiplayer has a substantial launch map mix
Activision listed 16 multiplayer maps at launch: 12 core maps designed for 6v6 and four Strike maps playable in 2v2 or 6v6. The Strike maps offer a smaller-scale option alongside standard matches. Xbox Wire’s October 22, 2024 launch guide also notes the return of Classic Prestige, a progression choice for players who want to reset their rank for prestige rewards.
Zombies returns to round-based play
The launch version included two Zombies maps, built around the round-based format that longtime fans may prefer to more open-ended approaches. Activision’s current store description also refers to later additions, including Directed Mode and the return of 4v4 Grief, alongside seasonal multiplayer maps. Those are official product descriptions, not confirmation that every mode or map is available in every playlist at a given time.

#1 Best Overall
- Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower.
- This is signature Black Ops across a cinematic single-player Campaign, a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, and the epic return of Round-Based Zombies.
- The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.
- In a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, players will test their skills across 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 Strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.
- Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
How good is the multiplayer?
Multiplayer is the clearest reason to rate Black Ops 6 highly. PC Gamer reviewer Nova Wright singled out Omnimovement, which allows players to sprint, slide, and dive in any direction, as a major part of the game’s appeal. The mechanic expands movement options and gives firefights a more fluid, aggressive feel. Wright also praised the multiplayer overall, though that is one PC review rather than a guarantee of how every platform or player will experience it. PC Gamer’s review was published November 4, 2024 and displays a score of 70.
For players who value movement, gunplay, and a broad choice of maps, the launch lineup gives the mode a solid foundation. The 12 core 6v6 maps are the standard match option, while the four Strike maps allow for smaller 2v2 games as well as 6v6. That variety is a more concrete strength than any claim that the game is simply “the best” for everyone: the verdict turns on whether this style of fast, movement-heavy Call of Duty is what you want.

Is the campaign good?
Reviews disagreed sharply on the Campaign, so it is the least secure part of the overall recommendation. Wright’s PC Gamer verdict called it tedious and said it dragged down an otherwise strong multiplayer-led game. The review criticized its pacing and progression ties between modes, as well as gaudy cosmetics. That is a specific critic’s assessment, not a universal finding, but it matters if a single-player story is your priority.
Other critics were more positive about the package, including its campaign. Metacritic’s page reproduces review excerpts from outlets including NME, Forbes, and the Irish Independent. NME’s October 31, 2024 excerpt called it “the most complete Call Of Duty experience in more than a decade,” while Forbes’s November 25 excerpt praised the campaign alongside the maps, gunplay, and Zombies. These are attributed review excerpts, not a measured consensus, and they show why the campaign’s reception should not be reduced to one verdict. Metacritic’s critic-review page collects the cited excerpts.

Who should play it?
- Multiplayer-first players: The strongest fit. Omnimovement and the range of core and Strike maps are central to the game’s appeal in PC Gamer’s review.
- Zombies fans: A good fit if you want round-based co-op, which is part of the launch package rather than a later add-on.
- Campaign-focused players: Approach with more caution. Critics differ, and PC Gamer’s review was notably negative about the campaign’s pacing.
- Players who dislike online dependencies: Check the connection requirement before buying. Activision says the game needs a continuous internet connection in every mode, including Campaign, because of texture streaming.
What to check before buying
Platform and edition compatibility can affect whether a copy works on your hardware. Activision’s edition and support information covers platform versions and bundle details. In particular, a physical PS5 edition is for PS5 only; a PS4 cross-gen bundle includes a PS5 digital code, but playing the PS5 version still requires the disc; and the Xbox cross-gen bundle covers Xbox versions. Physical copies do not work on Xbox Series S or a digital-only PS5.
Activision also says split-screen is available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but not PS4 or Xbox One. Its store listing says an internet connection and Activision account are required, and that linking a mobile number may be required. Check the requirements for your platform and region before purchase, especially if you need local split-screen or are considering a disc edition.

Verdict
Black Ops 6 earns the “best in years” praise most convincingly as a multiplayer-and-Zombies game. Its movement gives multiplayer a distinctive hook, and the launch package includes both a varied map lineup and round-based Zombies. The campaign divides critics: some praised the complete package, while PC Gamer found the story mode a drag. If multiplayer is your main event, this is an easy recommendation; if you are buying primarily for the campaign, the mixed reception makes it a more cautious one.
