Choose a PlayStation 5 over a Nintendo Switch 2 if the games you want are on PlayStation, you already own PS4 games, and you mainly play on a TV. PS5 also offers a current-generation feature set and an internal storage expansion option. Switch 2 is the stronger fit if handheld play matters: it supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. Neither console is the right choice for everyone; start with your game library and how you play.
1. The PlayStation game library is a better match for you
The clearest reason to choose PS5 is that it plays the games you actually want. Sony describes an extensive PS5 catalog, including console exclusives, but availability varies by title and territory. Check the current PlayStation catalog for the specific games you care about before buying; a general claim about a large library cannot tell you whether your favorites are there. Sony’s PS5 games page is a starting point.

Make a short list of must-play games for each console, including any games you expect to buy soon. If that list strongly favors PlayStation, it can outweigh Switch 2’s portability. If the games you want are on both platforms, your play setting and existing purchases become more useful deciding factors.
2. Much of your PS4 library can carry forward
If you own PS4 games, PS5 may let you continue that collection rather than starting over. Sony says, “The overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles.” That is broad compatibility, not a guarantee for every title: Sony notes that some functions may be unavailable and some games may show errors or unexpected behavior. Check a particular game on Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility page before counting on it.

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
This advantage applies to your PlayStation purchases, not to games owned on another platform. Nintendo also lists game-specific exceptions and unique requirements for Switch 2 compatibility, so check its Switch 2 compatibility information if you are weighing an existing Switch collection.
3. Your main setup is a television and a fixed place to play
PS5 is a natural fit if you expect to play at home on a television and do not need to take the console with you. Sony’s product pages present PS5 as a home console, with games available on disc or as digital downloads. Pick the edition that matches how you buy games: the standard PS5 includes a disc drive, while the Digital Edition is for digital purchases.

Switch 2 can also connect to a television, but it additionally supports tabletop and handheld play. Its detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers and portable format make it more flexible across rooms and away from home. That flexibility is a substantial reason to choose Switch 2 instead; this is a difference in use case, not proof that one console is objectively better. Nintendo lists TV output up to 4K for compatible games, so do not assume every game will use that resolution. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page and its console information.

4. PS5’s features suit games and displays that support them
Sony lists an ultra-high-speed SSD, DualSense controller haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio among PS5’s features. The console also supports variable refresh rate on compatible displays and games. These features can matter if you want a home-console experience built around responsive controls, fast storage, and supported display or audio features. Their effect depends on the game and your equipment; they do not guarantee a particular frame rate, resolution, or image quality.

- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6

Before treating a feature as a deciding factor, check whether the games you plan to play use it and whether your television or audio setup supports the relevant capability. Sony’s PS5 features page describes the system’s listed capabilities.
5. You can add compatible internal storage
PS5 supports expansion with a compatible internal M.2 SSD, which gives you an upgrade route if the console’s built-in storage is not enough for your installed games. Compatibility is not universal: Sony requires the drive to meet specified performance and size requirements. Check the current requirements before buying or installing an SSD, using Sony’s M.2 SSD installation and compatibility guide.

When Switch 2 is the better fit
Choose Switch 2 if playing handheld or moving between handheld, tabletop, and TV modes is central to how you game. Nintendo announced its release for June 5, 2025. Its launch announcement estimated battery life at approximately 2–6.5 hours; actual runtime is not guaranteed and varies with game and conditions. Nintendo also notes that Switch 2 compatibility has title-specific exceptions and unique requirements, so verify games and accessories rather than assuming every original Switch item works. Nintendo’s Switch 2 information covers the console and modes, while its compatibility page covers game-specific details.
A practical way to choose
- List the games you want. Prioritize specific titles and confirm their current platform availability.
- Check what you already own. Verify PS4 games individually for PS5, and check Nintendo’s compatibility details for Switch titles and accessories.
- Decide where you will play. A TV-first routine points toward PS5; a need for handheld and tabletop play points toward Switch 2.
- Compare the right models and local prices. Factor in disc versus digital buying and the storage configuration you need.
- Match features to your setup. Confirm that your games and display support the resolution, refresh-rate, audio, or controller features you care about.
The available manufacturer information establishes features, compatibility guidance, and announced pricing; it does not establish a controlled head-to-head performance or value comparison. Choose based on your own games, play setting, budget, and purchases rather than a blanket claim that one console is faster or better value.
