I gave up my The Witcher 3 run to play Dressmaker, and the switch made my evenings feel better to me. I wanted less time following a sprawling quest and more time making something with my hands—at least, the virtual version of them. That is a personal account, not a claim that one game is better or that a dressmaking game will improve anyone else’s wellbeing.
Why I put the Witcher run down
My The Witcher 3 save was waiting for me, with all the pull of a story I meant to continue. But I was no longer eager to spend my free time inside that particular run. I wanted a different kind of attention: a small, tangible task, a series of choices I could make myself, and a result that looked like mine.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Dressmaker offered that change of texture. Its official Steam listing describes choosing fabric, arranging and cutting patterns, sewing garments, and adding decorations. The point for me was not that an RPG is inherently exhausting or that a craft simulation is inherently relaxing. It was that I wanted to do something different from what I had been doing in my RPG, and this game gave me a clear creative activity to focus on.
What Dressmaker asks you to do
Dressmaker is a released, single-player simulation from developer Cozy Lives and publisher Free Lives. Steam lists its release date as September 21, 2026. The advertised loop moves from selecting fabric to laying out and cutting patterns, then sewing and decorating garments. You make custom dresses for townsfolk; the listing also says you can display and sell designs you have already made.

That sequence is the game’s appeal for me: the work has stages, but the stages keep returning to a design I chose. The choices are not just about what to do next in a task; they shape the thing the task produces. The result is a satisfying shift from progressing through someone else’s plot to making a garment that expresses my own decisions.
The difference was in the rhythm, not a verdict on either game
I can explain why I wanted the switch without pretending I conducted a fair comparison. I did not measure how much time either game takes, compare their difficulty, or establish that one has better writing or gameplay. I only know what I wanted from my own sessions at that point: less commitment to the run I had left open, more room to concentrate on a small creative project.

That distinction matters. A game’s advertised mechanics can explain what kind of activity it offers, but they cannot prove how every player will feel while doing it. For me, setting aside the Witcher save felt like permission to follow a different impulse instead of treating that save as an obligation. I got more out of playing when I stopped insisting that my next session had to continue the same adventure.

Some older coverage describes a prototype, not the released game. PC Gamer’s October 3, 2025 article covered the earlier prototype and discussed commissions, customer budgets, and designing, cutting, and stitching outfits. Steam lists the full release date as September 21, 2026; those dates describe different stages, not a contradiction about when the finished game arrived.
Steam Community announcements record early post-launch patches, including usability work and bug fixes. That establishes that updates were made after launch, not that future support is guaranteed. If you are deciding whether to buy, use the live Steam page for current availability and price rather than relying on a dated snapshot.

Why I am glad I switched
I am glad I let the Witcher run wait because Dressmaker gave me the sort of play I was craving: a focused making process, room to make choices, and a finished design at the end of it. The improvement is mine to report, not a promise the game can make for everyone. Sometimes the right game is simply the one that matches what you want to do tonight—even if it means leaving a much bigger adventure unfinished for now.
