Nintendo’s feature page and a February 2026 hands-on preview by MeriStation point to five defining parts of the experience: Pokémon abilities, habitat-driven encounters, a relaxed real-time world, several interlocking town-life systems, and cooperative visits.
1. Pokémon are tools and collaborators, not just residents
You play as Ditto, transformed to look human, and rebuild a town alongside Pokémon. Nintendo says Pokémon teach Ditto moves and abilities that help with tasks such as growing grass and navigating terrain: Bulbasaur’s Leafage can grow grass, while Lapras’s Surf lets you cross water. In its February 2026 hands-on preview, MeriStation also reported directing Pokémon such as Charmander to help with fire-related tasks. That task-specific example is the preview’s observation, rather than a complete official list of abilities.
Nintendo sums up the open-ended approach this way: “How you rebuild the world is up to you—you can explore, craft, create, and interact with Pokémon going about their day.” Nintendo’s feature page describes how abilities support that freedom.
2. Habitats help determine which Pokémon appear
Pokémon encounters are connected to how you shape the environment. In its hands-on preview, MeriStation described making connected patches of tall grass that brought Charmander into the area. The preview also reported that improving habitats and meeting more Pokémon expanded the player’s options for reshaping terrain.
#1 Best Overall
- Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
- Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
- Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
- Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
- Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.
This gives landscaping a practical purpose: the environment can encourage new encounters, and those Pokémon can in turn help with further changes. The exact example comes from MeriStation’s preview; it should not be read as a comprehensive rulebook for every habitat or encounter.
3. The world changes in real time, but the preview found no forced rush
Nintendo confirms a real-time day-and-night cycle and changing weather. You can also let time pass by napping. These systems make the town’s atmosphere shift as you play, rather than keeping it in a single fixed state.

MeriStation reported that the portion it played had no forced time-limited actions and let the player choose among accumulating objectives. That is the preview’s assessment of its play session, not a guarantee that every activity or future update will follow the same pacing.
4. Town building combines farming, crafting, requests, and exploration
Pokopia’s rebuilding loop reaches beyond placing buildings or decorating. Nintendo lists a range of activities that support life in town:

- Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass
- Gather materials and craft furniture.
- Grow crops and cook meals.
- Decorate spaces, take photos, and change your appearance.
- Fulfill Pokémon requests.
Those systems give players different ways to contribute: gathering and exploration supply materials, crafting and decoration shape the town, farming and cooking add daily activities, and requests connect progress to the Pokémon living there.

Nintendo says up to three other players can visit through local wireless or online play, and each visitor can bring a Pokémon. Online play requires a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo also documents GameShare, which can let a visitor who does not own the game join under the applicable system and session conditions. MeriStation reported playing cooperatively with three others during its preview; that account reflects its preview session.
