The most useful console accessories solve a specific problem: clearer multiplayer chat, a controller that suits you, fewer charging interruptions, more usable storage, or safer travel. They are options—not a checklist every player needs. Before buying, match each accessory to your exact console and controller generation.
How to choose accessories for your console
Start with what interrupts or limits the way you play. If you rarely use voice chat, for example, a dedicated headset may not be a priority. If you play on more than one platform, check support for each one rather than assuming an accessory is universal. The official PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo catalogs show platform-specific options; their listings do not make every item necessary for every player.
- Identify the problem: chat, control preference, charging, storage, or transport.
- Check the exact model: confirm the console generation and, for controller accessories, the controller model.
- Check the function: storage may expand playable capacity, support transfers, or serve another purpose; those uses are not interchangeable.
1. A gaming headset for chat and focused audio
A headset is most useful when you want a dedicated microphone for multiplayer voice chat or prefer headphones for game audio. PlayStation describes its headset and earbud accessories as options for audio and voice chat, and Xbox lists a wireless headset in its accessory range. Those listings do not establish that a headset is required for online play.
Before choosing one, verify that it works with your console and the connection method you plan to use. Consider whether you need a microphone, how long you typically wear it, and whether you want it to work with other devices. Comfort and cross-device support depend on the specific product, so check its compatibility details rather than relying on the word “gaming” in the name.

- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
2. An additional or upgraded controller
A second controller can make local multiplayer possible without passing one controller back and forth. An upgraded or differently shaped controller may also suit a player who prefers a particular layout or feel. PlayStation and Xbox list controllers for their systems; Nintendo lists the Switch 2 Pro Controller and Joy-Con 2 products. Confirm the intended console generation and any features you care about before buying.
Nintendo’s Switch 2 Pro Controller is for Switch 2, not a universal Nintendo controller. Nintendo lists a 3.5 mm CTIA-standard audio jack on that controller, but that detail should not be assumed for other controllers. Check the manufacturer’s listing for the exact model and feature set.

3. Charging gear to reduce interruptions
A compatible charging dock, grip, or rechargeable battery can make it easier to keep controllers ready between sessions. The right choice depends on the controller: charging accessories are not automatically interchangeable even within one console brand.
For example, Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 charging grip is made for Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 controllers and cannot be used with original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers. Verify both the accessory and controller model before ordering.

4. Storage that matches the console’s rules
Storage is the category where format and intended use matter most. A drive or card that fits physically may not support the games or functions you expect. Check the console maker’s instructions for the exact system and distinguish playable storage from transfer or archive storage.
Nintendo Switch 2: microSD Express for game storage
Nintendo says Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards for game storage, with capacity up to 2 TB; the card is sold separately. A standard microSD card used with an older Switch cannot save or load Switch 2 digital games. Nintendo says those older cards can be used to import screenshots and videos. Switch 2 game save data remains in system memory, not on the microSD Express card. See Nintendo’s microSD Express guidance and its compatibility details before choosing a card.

PlayStation: external USB storage has specific roles
PlayStation distinguishes between transferring compatible games and add-ons between external and internal storage, and playing compatible PS4 games directly from an external USB drive on PS4 or PS5. Do not assume that all PS5 games can run from an external USB drive. Check PlayStation’s external storage guidance for the applicable rules.
Xbox: verify the exact drive and game-use rules
Xbox’s accessory catalog lists expansion cards and external drives for Series X|S. That listing alone does not establish which games can run from each type of drive. Before buying, check the support information for the specific console and storage model rather than assuming an external drive and an expansion card work alike.

5. A carrying or protection case
A case can help protect a console during storage or travel, especially for a portable system. Choose one made for your console and decide what it needs to hold: the system alone, or also controllers, cables, a dock, and game cards. Nintendo’s Switch 2 listings include a case for carrying the console and a larger all-in-one case described for the system, dock, controllers, cables, and game cards. For other platforms, look for a case specifically designed around that console’s size and accessories.
