It does not establish a defensible, sourced lineup of five games that changed gaming forever. Rather than fill the list with unsupported picks, here is what the documented history can show—and what the title’s date and influence claims require.
What “from 1985” means matters
A game can be created in one year, ported or first circulated in another, and released commercially in different territories at still other times. Those events are not interchangeable. A list that does not say which date it means can make a misleading claim even when the game itself is correctly named.

Nintendo’s company history confirms that Super Mario Bros. software went on sale for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985. Nintendo identifies the Family Computer, launched earlier in Japan, as the system known as the NES outside Japan. The two games the available record can substantiate
Super Mario Bros. — a confirmed 1985 Famicom/NES release
Nintendo’s corporate history places the game’s software release in 1985 and describes the NES as launching in North America that year. Nintendo says the game “quickly became a smash hit around the world.” That is Nintendo’s retrospective characterization; it is not an independently measured estimate of sales, audience reach, or the game’s effect on the market. That evidence supports the game’s release year and Nintendo’s account of its reception. It does not, by itself, establish a precise design innovation or prove that the game alone changed the industry forever. Those stronger claims need specific evidence about influence, adoption, or later design that is not established here.
Tetris — created in 1984, spreading in 1985
The Tetris Company says Alexey Pajitnov developed the first version on an Electronika 60 in Moscow in 1984. In 1985, the game was ported to IBM PC and spread through the Soviet Union. So Tetris belongs in a discussion of games circulating in 1985, but calling it an unqualified 1985 original release blurs its documented creation date with its later port and spread. The same company says the Game Boy launched in 1989 with Tetris as its packed-in cartridge and reports more than 35 million copies sold in that Game Boy context. Why this cannot responsibly be presented as a five-game ranking
The available official accounts support a clear 1985 release claim for Super Mario Bros. and a carefully qualified 1985 circulation claim for Tetris. They do not substantiate three additional games or establish an authoritative ranking of five games from that year by lasting influence. Naming three more as if that lineup were settled would turn an editorial selection into a historical fact without evidence.

A defensible five-game feature would need to define whether “from 1985” means first creation, first release in a specified territory, or first circulation, then document each selection’s platform, distribution, and specific contribution. “Changed gaming forever” also needs an observable mechanism—such as influence on later design, platform adoption, distribution, or audience reach—not just a memorable reputation. Until those criteria and evidence are in place, the two documented cases above are the limit of what can be established.
