What is Pokémon Heart & Soul?
Pokémon Heart & Soul is a fan-made GBA ROM hack built around Johto. The project describes its 2.0 release as a remake of Gold, Silver, and Crystal and a “demake” of HeartGold and SoulSilver: it reworks that Johto experience for a GBA-style setting using the pokeemerald decompilation ecosystem. The project team’s README says it “brings the classic Johto Region and its iconic story to the world of modern GBA decomp hacking.” Project README

“Demake” here means adapting a later game’s ideas and content to an earlier platform style; it does not mean the DS games have simply been converted wholesale. Why “a love letter to Gen 2” fits
The strongest reason is the game’s foundation: it returns to the Johto region and its familiar adventure, drawing on both the original Generation II games and their Generation IV remakes. Its GBA presentation and additions change the experience, but Johto remains the point of the project.

The phrase is an interpretation, not an official slogan. A player used the wording “It’s pretty much a love letter to Gen 2” in a discussion about the hack. Player discussion The project’s own description is more precise: a fresh take on the GSC/HGSS experience.

What features does Heart & Soul add?
Project materials describe a full Johto story and Kanto postgame, along with following Pokémon, day-and-night encounters, and a roster focused on Generations I–III with selected later evolutions. The documented options include a toggleable physical/special split, Fairy type, AutoRun, FastSurf, shiny-rate customization, rematches, Safari Zones, and more. The official player documentation frames it as a traditional Pokémon experience, not a difficulty hack. Its appeal is therefore the combination of a familiar Johto journey and newer conveniences or configurable systems, rather than a challenge-first redesign. Official player documentation

Is it HeartGold and SoulSilver on GBA?
Not exactly. Heart & Soul draws on HeartGold and SoulSilver as well as Gold, Silver, and Crystal, but it is an independent fan project with changed and added systems. Calling it “HGSS on GBA” can convey the broad idea, but it overstates the fidelity if taken literally. “A Johto remake-demake inspired by GSC and HGSS” is more accurate.

Version and save compatibility
Version labels differ across project channels: the repository README identifies 2.0.1 as the last official release for that repository, the PokéCommunity thread is titled v2.0.2, and the official FAQ search result identifies v2.0.4. Those labels alone do not establish which is the latest authoritative build. Check the project’s official download information and identify the exact version before starting. The project warns that saves from before the 2.0 engine rebuild are incompatible with versions after 2.0. Treat a major version transition as a potential fresh-start boundary rather than assuming an older save will carry over. PokéCommunity project thread

Getting the game legitimately
Heart & Soul is distributed as a ROM hack/patch, not as a boxed Pokémon release. Use project-sanctioned download channels and follow their setup instructions; do not download an unauthorized copy of a copyrighted base game.
