The right Steam repair depends on what is broken. Clear the download cache for download or startup problems, refresh Steam’s client files when the program itself is damaged, repair the Windows Steam Service for service or VAC errors, verify files when only one game is affected, and fully reinstall Steam only after protecting your installed games.
These steps apply to Steam on Windows and macOS unless noted. Steam Deck and other SteamOS devices use a separate factory-reset process.

1. Clear Steam’s download cache
Clearing the download cache is the least destructive first step for games that will not download, update, or start correctly. It does not remove installed games, but Steam will sign you in again afterward.
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Select Steam > Settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Click Clear Download Cache.
- Confirm the operation when prompted.
Steam Support recommends this for download and startup problems, but it is not a repair of Steam’s program files. If the client itself will not open or its files are damaged, continue with the client-file refresh below. Steam’s official instructions explain the cache reset.

- Carrying case with removable liner
2. Refresh Steam’s client files on Windows
Refreshing the installation replaces Steam’s client files while retaining the installed games in steamapps. It is more substantial than clearing the cache, but it is not the same as a full uninstall.
- Exit Steam completely.
- Open the Steam installation folder. The usual location is
C:Program Files (x86)Steam. - Delete everything in that folder except
steamappsandsteam.exe. - Restart Windows.
- Open
steam.exedirectly from the Steam installation folder, rather than using an existing desktop or Start-menu shortcut.
Steam will download and rebuild the client files. If Steam is installed in another directory, use that directory instead. When file extensions are hidden, identify steam.exe by its blue-and-white Steam icon.
This procedure preserves the installed games in steamapps, but it does not guarantee that every local Steam setting or user-data file will remain. Follow Steam Support’s file-refresh procedure carefully before deleting anything.

3. Repair the Steam Service on Windows
Use Steam Service repair when the error points to the Steam Service or Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC). It repairs a Windows service, not the entire Steam client.
- Exit Steam.
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Enter this command, including the quotation marks:
"C:Program Files (x86)SteambinSteamService.exe" /repair
- Run the command with administrator privileges.
- Launch Steam and test it again.
If Steam is installed elsewhere, replace the path with the correct installation directory. The repair may take several minutes. This method is specifically documented for service and VAC-related failures; it is not a substitute for refreshing Steam’s client files. See Steam’s Steam Service repair instructions.
4. Verify the files for one affected game
If Steam works but one game crashes, will not launch, or reports missing files, verify that game’s installation. This repairs the selected game—not the Steam client.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game, or open its Library page and click the gear icon on the far right.
- Select Properties….
- Choose Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
The check may take several minutes. Do not verify multiple games at the same time, and avoid running it alongside intensive tasks such as disk defragmentation or antivirus scanning.

A message saying that one or more files failed to verify is often normal. Steam says these are commonly local configuration files that are intentionally not replaced. If files repeatedly disappear, check whether antivirus software is quarantining them; missing game files are not always caused by Steam corruption. The complete procedure and its limitations are described in Steam’s file-verification guide and its antivirus troubleshooting guidance.
5. Fully uninstall and reinstall Steam
A full reinstall is the most destructive option. Back up or move your installed games before starting. The normal Windows uninstall removes Steam and installed game content unless steamapps is moved out of the Steam folder first.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Windows
- Exit Steam.
- Move
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappsoutside the Steam directory, or make a backup. - Open Windows Settings > Apps.
- Find and select Steam, then choose Uninstall.
- Select Automatic, click Next, and then click Finish.
- Download and reinstall Steam from its current Get Steam Now page.
Steam Support currently labels this Windows procedure as intended for Windows 10. If the normal uninstaller fails because the installation is damaged, Steam says reinstalling Steam first may repair the installation sufficiently for removal.
Do not run the uninstaller if Steam was mistakenly installed directly into a broader folder containing unrelated files, such as C:Program Files (x86); the uninstaller deletes the folder in which Steam was installed. Manual removal of Steam registry entries is a last resort. The entries listed by Steam include HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREValve, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeValve, and HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareValve. The applicable machine-wide path depends on whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. Use Steam Support’s uninstall guide rather than deleting registry entries casually.

Do not apply the Windows file-deletion or SteamService.exe /repair instructions to a Steam Deck or another supported SteamOS device. Its reset process is different and removes local data, including games.
- Press the Steam button.
- Select Settings.
- Select System.
- Scroll to Factory Reset.
- Select the Factory Reset button.
The Factory Reset option clears local data and reinstalls Steam/SteamOS. The Re-install SteamOS option may require an active internet connection. Back up anything important before proceeding. Steam’s SteamOS reset guide lists the current path.
