Sellen cannot be physically freed from Witchbane Ruins. Take her Primal Glintstone, transplant it into her puppet body in the Three Sisters, and continue the quest.

You cannot physically free Sorceress Sellen from the chains in Witchbane Ruins. Instead, speak to her and remove Sellen’s Primal Glintstone, then transplant it into her puppet body in the Three Sisters. This transfers Sellen’s consciousness and advances her quest.

Prerequisites

The Primal Glintstone interaction at Witchbane Ruins is unavailable until you progress Sellen’s quest. You must:

  1. Find Sellen beneath Waypoint Ruins in Limgrave and defeat Mad Pumpkin Head.
  2. Meet Primeval Sorcerer Azur in Hermit Village and obtain Comet Azur.
  3. Return to Sellen at Waypoint Ruins and exhaust her dialogue.
  4. Receive the Sellian Sealbreaker from Sellen.
  5. Use it in Sellia Hideaway to reach Master Lusat and obtain Stars of Ruin.
  6. Defeat Starscourge Radahn.
  7. Return to Sellen at Waypoint Ruins and exhaust her dialogue again.

Sellen will then direct you to her body at Witchbane Ruins. This progression is documented in RPG Site’s Sellen quest walkthrough and Eldenpedia’s Sellen quest reference.

How to remove Sellen’s Primal Glintstone

  1. Travel to Witchbane Ruins in the Weeping Peninsula. The ruins are south of the Fourth Church of Marika.
  2. Descend into the cellar.
  3. Find the chained Sellen at the back of the room and speak with her repeatedly.
  4. Choose “Accept Primal Glintstone” when the option appears.

Sellen’s Primal Glintstone is a key item. It cannot be equipped or activated from your inventory. The extraction animation and Sellen’s scream are intentional quest events, so do not assume the interaction failed.

  • Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
  • Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.

The chained body does not stand up or leave Witchbane Ruins. You have removed the item containing Sellen’s consciousness; the next step is to place it in a new body.

Where to transplant the Primal Glintstone

  1. Enter Caria Manor in northern Liurnia.
  2. Defeat Royal Knight Loretta and enter the Three Sisters.
  3. Go to the ruined structure northeast of Ranni’s Rise, between the towers.
  4. Reveal the illusory floor inside the ruins by attacking or rolling against it.
  5. Descend into the puppet cellar and attack the illusory wall at the far end.
  6. Interact with Sellen’s puppet and choose “Transplant Primal Glintstone.”

Sellen’s consciousness will move into the puppet. You do not need to complete Ranni’s entire questline for this step; you only need access to the Three Sisters and the hidden cellar.

If Sellen only repeats her chained dialogue

This usually means one of the quest prerequisites is incomplete. Confirm that you have met Azur, collected Comet Azur, found Lusat and collected Stars of Ruin, defeated Radahn, and exhausted Sellen’s dialogue at Waypoint Ruins afterward. Discovering Witchbane Ruins early does not unlock the Primal Glintstone option.

If “Transplant Primal Glintstone” is missing

  • Make sure you are speaking to the puppet in the hidden cellar between Ranni’s Rise and Renna’s Rise, not the chained body at Witchbane Ruins.
  • Check that Sellen’s Primal Glintstone is in your inventory.
  • Interact with the puppet body before trying to leave.
  • Complete the required dialogue with Witch-Hunter Jerren and reload the relevant area.

Jerren’s role in the quest

After taking the Primal Glintstone, reload Witchbane Ruins and check the cellar. Jerren may be standing over Sellen’s body. If he is not there, return to Redmane Castle after Radahn’s festival, find Jerren, and exhaust his dialogue. Reload the area and check Witchbane Ruins again.

If Jerren has already moved to Witchbane Ruins or the Raya Lucaria Grand Library, continue from his current location rather than repeating earlier steps. His location changes as the quest advances: he is associated with Redmane Castle before or during the festival, Witchbane Ruins after Sellen gives you the Primal Glintstone, and Raya Lucaria during the final stage. See Eldenpedia’s Jerren reference for the progression.

What happens next

After transplanting the Primal Glintstone, Sellen’s next quest stage takes place outside the Raya Lucaria Grand Library. You must defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon to access the final choice.

Can Celestial Dew fix a dead or hostile Sellen?

Do not attack Sellen during the quest. Celestial Dew generally removes NPC hostility, but it does not universally resurrect NPCs you have killed. The different Sellen bodies and projections are quest-state elements, not evidence that you should attack one of them. More details are available in Eldenpedia’s Celestial Dew reference.
