NVIDIA limited U.S. Founders Edition sales to Best Buy’s website, and stock disappeared quickly. The tactics below could improve a legitimate buyer’s odds, but none guarantees an order.
This is a retrospective launch-day guide, not a promise of a new 2026 release. Availability, pricing, retailer rules, and NVIDIA’s access programs can change.

What you were actually trying to buy
The Founders Edition (FE) is NVIDIA’s own reference-designed RTX 5090, not a generic name for every RTX 5090. It launched with 32GB of GDDR7 memory and a $1,999 official starting price in the United States.
ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, PNY, Zotac, and other manufacturers sell separate add-in-board (AIB) cards. Those models may have different coolers, dimensions, clock speeds, power connectors, warranties, prices, and availability. A partner RTX 5090 is not an RTX 5090 Founders Edition.

For the U.S. launch, NVIDIA identified Best Buy’s website as the source for limited FE quantities. Outside the U.S., NVIDIA announced regional availability through NVIDIA.com and selected retailers, so use your country’s NVIDIA store rather than assuming the Best Buy process applies.
The Best Buy FE listing identified the product as the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition 32GB GDDR7, SKU 6614151, model 900-1G144-2530-000. Its listed price was $1,999.99, and it was observed as sold out.
The five tactics that gave buyers the best odds
1. Finish account and checkout setup before launch
The fastest buyer is usually the one who has already solved login, address, and payment problems. Before the announced release time:

- Save the shipping address and check that the billing address matches your payment account.
- Verify a primary payment method and keep a backup available.
- Remove expired cards and outdated addresses.
- Make sure your available credit or bank balance covers the card, tax, and any temporary authorization hold.
- Use a strong, unique password and two-factor authentication where available.
- Disable extensions that interfere with cookies, CAPTCHA, payment pages, or checkout.
- Keep your credentials and phone nearby in case the retailer requires fresh verification.
Open the exact product page and sign in early. A second device can be useful if the first session fails, but avoid opening dozens of tabs or repeatedly hammering the site. Excessive activity can trigger rate limits, stale sessions, or fraud controls.

Saving payment details improves speed but increases account-security exposure. Never use checkout scripts, CAPTCHA-solving services, bots, or attempts to bypass quantity limits.
2. Use the correct official retailer and region
Do not spend launch time searching every retailer for an FE if NVIDIA has designated a specific sales channel. In the United States, the relevant launch channel was Best Buy’s website. Newegg, Amazon, Micro Center, and B&H might list RTX 5090 partner cards, but those listings do not prove they have the NVIDIA FE.
Before buying, verify the product name, SKU, seller, and Founders Edition designation. Search results can mix FE listings with larger AIB cards, prebuilt systems, and marketplace offers. A third-party marketplace listing at an inflated price is not an official FE launch sale.
A paid Best Buy membership should not be treated as a guaranteed advantage. Unless Best Buy’s current event rules explicitly require or reward membership, membership is not proof of priority access.

3. Use several stock-alert channels
Stock alerts can reduce the time between a restock and your attempt, but they cannot reserve a card or guarantee checkout. Use multiple independent signals:
- Retailer email or app notifications.
- A service such as HotStock.
- A webpage monitor such as Distill.
- Established hardware-stock communities.
- NVIDIA and retailer social channels.
Alerts may be delayed, may trigger when a page state changes, or may detect inventory that vanishes before the notification arrives. Treat an alert as a prompt to check the official product page, not as proof that an order is waiting.
Do not pay for a service claiming to guarantee a GPU. Do not follow unverified checkout links from fast-moving chatrooms, and do not use scrapers or automated checkout tools that violate retailer rules.

Open the product page before the announced time, stay signed in, and use a synchronized clock. When the button changes from “Coming Soon,” “Sold Out,” or a similar state, attempt checkout immediately.

- Follow the retailer’s waiting-room or queue instructions.
- Do not repeatedly reload if the page tells you to wait.
- If the card reaches your cart, proceed directly to checkout.
- If payment fails, use the prepared backup method without abandoning the product page.
- Continue checking after the first batch disappears.
An item in a cart is not necessarily reserved. Treat the purchase as successful only after the retailer confirms the order and provides an order number.
Launch inventory can appear in waves because of cancellations, failed payments, or inventory reconciliation. Best Buy customer reports described later availability attempts, including Thursday-morning patterns, but these are anecdotal observations rather than an official schedule. Do not organize your entire plan around a rumored drop time.
Respect quantity limits and avoid duplicate accounts, addresses, or payment methods. Multiple orders can be canceled.
5. Decide your fallback before launch
A pre-set fallback prevents frustration from turning into an impulsive marketplace purchase. Choose your maximum price and preferred outcome in advance:

- Another official FE restock: best for buyers who care most about the NVIDIA design and launch MSRP.
- NVIDIA Verified Priority Access: a later, limited U.S. opportunity if the program is open and you qualify.
- A reputable partner RTX 5090: suitable if performance matters more than the FE’s design, size, or price.
- A different GPU: sensible if your actual gaming or creator workload does not require a 5090.
- Waiting: often safer than paying an unverified seller several thousand dollars.
NVIDIA’s Verified Priority Access program was later introduced for a limited number of verified U.S. GeForce users seeking RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 Founders Edition cards. Reported eligibility required an NVIDIA account created on or before January 30, 2025, at 6:00 a.m. Pacific Time. It was not a launch-day option available to everyone, and its current status should be checked directly.
Accepting an AIB card increases your chance of obtaining an RTX 5090, not your chance of obtaining an FE. Partner cards can also cost substantially more than the FE and may require more case space or different power and cooling arrangements.

- Do not assume every RTX 5090 listing is a Founders Edition.
- Do not assume a cart reserves the card.
- Do not trust an alert blindly.
- Do not use bots, CAPTCHA bypasses, or checkout scripts.
- Do not assume a Best Buy membership guarantees priority.
- Do not camp outside a store unless the retailer explicitly announces in-store inventory.
- Do not buy from an unverified marketplace seller in a panic.
- Do not keep refreshing indefinitely or pay a price that violates your pre-set limit.
Before you click Buy
The buying-odds plan does not matter if the card cannot fit or power your system. Check the case clearance, motherboard slot clearance, power-supply capacity and connector compatibility, airflow, and the retailer’s return policy.
