ASUS did not announce a new ROG Ally handheld at Computex 2025. The company showed the existing ROG Ally X and accessories such as the ROG Dock, but there was no official “ROG Ally 2” reveal, release date, or successor specification. The uncertainty lasted less than three weeks: on June 8, 2025, ASUS and Microsoft announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X at the Xbox Games Showcase.
That makes Computex’s silence a real omission, but not evidence that ASUS had canceled its handheld business. The next-generation products arrived later under Xbox-focused branding rather than the ROG Ally 2 name.

What ASUS showed at Computex 2025
ASUS’s official Computex gaming presentation focused on its existing handheld strategy rather than a new model. The ROG Ally X was featured, alongside the ROG Dock and a broader lineup of ROG laptops, desktops, phones and peripherals.

The ROG Dock is a 7-in-1 accessory with HDMI 2.1, USB connectivity, RJ45 Ethernet and a 3.5mm audio connection. In other words, ASUS did show handheld-related hardware—but it did not announce another Ally handheld.

That distinction matters. Saying ASUS showed “nothing handheld-related” is inaccurate; saying it announced no new ROG Ally at Computex is correct.
Why fans expected an “ROG Ally 2”
Computex looked like the natural venue for a successor. ASUS announced the original ROG Ally in 2023 and introduced the ROG Ally X during the 2024 Computex cycle. The event had therefore established a pattern, even though ASUS had never publicly promised an Ally 2 reveal for 2025.
Expectations were also driven by AMD’s Ryzen Z2 family, reports about a Microsoft-and-ASUS handheld project commonly referred to as Project Kennan, and leaked images and speculation. Some reporting and community discussion used “ROG Ally 2” as shorthand for the rumored device. That was an expectation—not an official product name or confirmed ASUS commitment.
Contemporary Computex coverage reflected the same gap between what many readers expected and what ASUS actually presented.

Was the handheld canceled or delayed?
Neither conclusion was supported by the evidence available at Computex. The accurate sequence is:
- At Computex 2025: ASUS announced no new Ally handheld.
- On June 8, 2025: ASUS and Microsoft unveiled two new handhelds at the Xbox Games Showcase.
- On October 16, 2025: both devices launched.
It is reasonable to say ASUS held the announcement for a different event. It is not justified to claim that Computex caused a confirmed delay. The Xbox showcase was a more appropriate stage for hardware designed around Xbox software, Game Pass, cloud gaming, remote play and PC game access.
The announcement that resolved the mystery
ASUS and Microsoft announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X on June 8, 2025. The official Xbox announcement presented them as a collaboration, while ASUS described the hardware and product positioning in its official announcement.
The Xbox identity explains why the products were not called ROG Ally 2. They were not simply processor updates: the family introduced a redesigned control approach, Xbox-oriented software features, dedicated Xbox controls and a closer connection to Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem. Windows remains the underlying platform, so these are Windows handheld PCs with Xbox integration—not traditional Xbox consoles that run every Xbox console game locally.

Is the ROG Xbox Ally really the “Ally 2”?
Functionally, it occupies the successor role. Officially, it is not called ROG Ally 2.

The new family changes more than the processor. It adds a redesigned chassis and grips, Xbox controls, a new software experience and Microsoft branding. It also splits the range into a standard ROG Xbox Ally and a premium ROG Xbox Ally X, rather than offering one device with only a storage difference.

Some later reporting described the ROG Xbox Ally as a genuine successor to ASUS’s earlier handhelds. That is a useful way to understand its place in the product line, but readers should keep the naming distinction clear: “ROG Ally 2” was pre-release shorthand, while ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are the official names.

The Xbox Games Showcase was strategically important because these handhelds were presented as part of a broader Xbox experience. The announced ecosystem includes:
- Xbox Game Pass access, subject to plan, region and game availability
- Xbox Cloud Gaming
- Remote Play from an Xbox console
- Xbox Play Anywhere titles where supported
- Access to supported Windows PC storefronts
That does not mean every Xbox game runs locally on the handheld. A title may require a native Windows PC version, Play Anywhere support, cloud streaming or remote play. Game Pass access is also not the same as universal compatibility with the entire Xbox catalog.

What Computex’s silence meant for buyers
At the time, waiting was reasonable for anyone specifically interested in newer AMD silicon, Xbox integration or a redesigned handheld. But the absence of an announcement did not make the existing ROG Ally X unusable or create an obligation to wait indefinitely.
| Buyer priority | More sensible choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Needs a Windows handheld immediately | Existing ROG Ally X or another available model | No successor had a confirmed price or release date at Computex. |
| Wants Xbox-focused software and controls | ROG Xbox Ally family | The new models were built around Microsoft’s handheld experience. |
| Wants the lower entry price | ROG Xbox Ally | It has 16GB memory, 512GB storage and the Ryzen Z2 A platform. |
| Prioritizes capacity and premium hardware | ROG Xbox Ally X | It raises the specification tier with 24GB memory, 1TB storage, an 80Wh battery and Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme. |
| Finds a heavily discounted Ally X | Existing ROG Ally X | It may offer better value if Xbox-specific features are not important. |
Buyers should also check accessory compatibility instead of assuming every older Ally accessory fits the newer family perfectly. The ROG Xbox Ally models have their own hardware and control changes, while the ROG Dock remains relevant for desktop-style use with an external display, wired networking and USB peripherals.
The bottom line
Computex 2025 really did produce no new ASUS ROG Ally announcement. ASUS showed the existing Ally X and related accessories, leaving fans to wonder whether the rumored successor had been canceled. The answer arrived on June 8: ASUS and Microsoft revealed the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, which served as the expected next step for the Ally family under a new Xbox-centered name.
So the most accurate reading is not “ASUS canceled the Ally 2,” and not “ASUS promised a Computex reveal.” It is: the new handheld was announced later, at an event designed to explain its Xbox partnership.
For the official launch timing, see Xbox’s October 16, 2025 release announcement.
