Batocera is arguably the best all-in-one retro-gaming operating system for people who want a console-like experience. Its advantage is not simply the number of emulators it includes. Batocera combines a bootable Linux-based system, controller-first menus, broad hardware support, centralized library management, advanced display options, online features and living-room conveniences in one package.
That does not make it universally superior. Desktop emulator setups offer more freedom, RetroPie can suit hands-on Raspberry Pi projects, and Recalbox or Lakka may be preferable for users who want a more focused experience. Batocera earns its “king” status when the priority is turning compatible hardware into a polished, dedicated multi-system console.

What Batocera actually is
Batocera is a Linux distribution designed for retro gaming. It boots from a USB drive, SD card or internal storage and opens directly into a gaming interface instead of a conventional desktop.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That distinction matters:
- Batocera is the operating system and frontend.
- Emulators and cores are the programs that run individual consoles and arcade systems.
- ROMs and BIOS files are the game and firmware files users must obtain legally and supply themselves.
- Themes, artwork, bezels and metadata organize and present the library.
Batocera does not provide a legal commercial-ROM library. Its installation guide treats installing the system separately from adding games and BIOS files.

1. It behaves like a dedicated console
Batocera’s biggest strength is its appliance-like design. Install the correct image, boot the machine and navigate a game library with a controller. You do not need to open separate Windows, macOS or Linux emulator applications every time you want to play.
The main interface is a modified version of EmulationStation. It is designed for television-distance use, with system menus, controller navigation, game lists and emulator launching presented as one experience. Most major controllers are recognized through Batocera’s internal database, while unsupported devices can be mapped manually; see the controller documentation.
This makes Batocera especially attractive for:
- a living-room PC connected to a television;
- an old laptop or mini PC repurposed as a console;
- an arcade cabinet;
- a supported handheld;
- a family machine that should not expose desktop settings.
The normal setup is straightforward: download the image for the target device, flash it to removable or internal storage, boot from it and allow Batocera to expand its userdata partition. The official installation guide warns that some modern PCs may require Secure Boot changes and that Nvidia hardware may need manual driver activation.
Recommended Free Tools
So “plug and play” is a useful description of the finished interface, not a guarantee that every installation is effortless. Test from USB before overwriting an internal drive, and remember that installing to the wrong disk can destroy existing data.
2. It covers an unusually wide range of hardware
Batocera is not tied to one board, manufacturer or computer class. Its device documentation covers desktop PCs, mini PCs and NUCs, single-board computers, lightweight handhelds, x86 handheld PCs, supported wireless adapters and several devices with special installation procedures.
The official download page provides images for desktop computers, laptops, NUCs, Intel-based Apple computers, Steam Deck and numerous handheld and single-board platforms. The compatibility list includes families such as Raspberry Pi, Orange Pi, Rockchip, Odroid and Anbernic devices.
That breadth gives Batocera a valuable degree of portability. A user can begin with a USB installation on an old PC, move to a mini PC, or choose a supported handheld without abandoning the same general frontend philosophy.
But “supported” does not mean “equally powerful.” A device may boot Batocera while still having limitations involving GPU acceleration, audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, suspend and resume, controller compatibility or emulator performance. Eight- and 16-bit systems generally place modest demands on hardware; arcade, fifth-generation and newer 3D systems vary far more by title and emulator. Check the exact device page before buying hardware.
3. It turns a ROM folder into a polished library
A manually assembled emulator setup often feels like a collection of unrelated programs. Batocera’s frontend makes different systems feel like sections of one console library.
Its EmulationStation layer supports artwork and screenshot scraping, themes, collections, music, decorations, bezels, RetroAchievements, content downloads, netplay, web access and restricted interface modes. The relevant EmulationStation documentation details the available features.
A practical library workflow looks like this:
- Install the appropriate Batocera image and boot it once.
- Add legally obtained ROMs and required BIOS files.
- Refresh the gamelists.
- Scrape artwork and metadata.
- Choose a theme and organize collections.
- Apply global, per-system or per-game settings where necessary.
Batocera’s menu structure supports system-wide, per-system and per-game configuration. That is important because one game may need a different core, resolution, control layout or performance setting from the rest of its system.
Scraping is a major convenience, not magic. Results depend on filenames and the selected metadata source. Incorrect matches, missing artwork, multi-disc games, unusual file structures and large libraries can all require cleanup. Scrape after the library structure is reasonably organized rather than expecting the process to fix every naming problem.
4. It offers deep control over image quality and latency
Batocera is friendly to beginners, but it also gives experienced users substantial control over how games look and respond.
Shaders, scaling and bezels
Users can select shader sets, integer scaling, rendering resolutions, aspect-ratio options and decorations. Integer scaling preserves clean pixel geometry. CRT-style shaders can add scanlines and curvature, while bezels fill unused space around games that do not naturally fit a modern widescreen display.
These settings are particularly useful because old systems do not share one ideal presentation. A handheld game, a 240p console game and a 3D sixth-generation title may each benefit from different scaling and shader choices. Global defaults can provide consistency, while per-system and per-game profiles handle exceptions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Run-ahead and input response
Run-ahead can reduce perceived input latency in supported configurations by using additional CPU resources. It is not a universal zero-lag switch: support varies by emulator and game, and demanding settings can reduce performance. Treat it as an advanced option to test selectively.

Savestates and hotkeys
Common controller combinations can exit games, save and load states, access emulator menus, rewind, fast-forward and change other functions. The documented defaults include:
Hotkey + Start: exit the emulator;Hotkey + Y: save a state;Hotkey + X: load a state;- D-pad left or right: rewind or fast-forward where supported;
Hotkey + B: open an emulator menu where available.
Consult the official hotkey documentation because shortcuts vary by controller mapping, emulator and architecture. Savestate support is also uneven: RetroArch has broad integration, while standalone emulators such as Dolphin, PPSSPP, PCSX2 and DuckStation can behave differently. The savestate documentation explains those differences.
5. It adds modern features to old games
RetroAchievements
RetroAchievements adds goals and achievement tracking to compatible games and cores. Hardcore Mode disables conveniences such as rewind and loading save states, making the challenge closer to original-hardware play.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompatibility is conditional. It depends on the game, core, emulator and sometimes the file format. For example, the Batocera documentation notes that PlayStation 1 achievements may require a .cue file paired with .bin files or a .chd, rather than a .pbp. Not every Libretro core supports achievements.
Netplay
Batocera supports network multiplayer through RetroArch and compatible Libretro cores. Players generally need matching Batocera releases and matching ROMs; the netplay guide recommends checking ROM MD5 checksums.
Netplay can fail when players use different versions, incompatible cores, mismatched files, blocked incoming connections or unsupported platforms. Some sessions require a relay server, and cross-platform support is not universal.
These features broaden the appeal beyond solitary nostalgia. Achievements add progression, netplay enables shared sessions, rewind makes difficult games more approachable, and per-game profiles reduce the friction of maintaining a mixed library. The important qualification is that none of these conveniences works identically across every emulator.
6. It is a living-room and family system, not just an emulator launcher
Kodi integration
Batocera can launch Kodi, allowing one device to serve as both a retro console and media center. Kodi supports controller-based use, which is useful in a television setup. However, it is not available on every target. The Kodi documentation lists exclusions including certain low-powered or unusual devices such as some OGA/RK3326 images, Orange Pi Zero 2, Raspberry Pi 1 and Raspberry Pi Zero 2 images.
Content downloads
The content downloader can provide freely distributed themes, music and bezels through Batocera’s package infrastructure. It should not be mistaken for an official store for commercial games.
Kid and kiosk modes
For a shared machine, the restricted interface modes are unusually practical. Open SYSTEM SETTINGS → UI MODE to select kiosk or kid-oriented behavior. Kiosk Mode hides many system options while retaining game access. Kid Mode limits the visible library to selected games. The UI mode documentation explains how the restricted modes are unlocked.
Network administration
Batocera also supports web access, network file transfer, external storage, NAS workflows and Syncthing-based synchronization. That means ROMs, artwork and configuration can often be managed without connecting a keyboard and mouse to the television box. The official documentation index links to these tools and workflows.
How to set up Batocera without avoidable problems
- Check the exact hardware. Use the device pages and compatibility list, not a generic claim that Batocera works on every PC.
- Download the matching image. Architecture and device-specific images are not interchangeable.
- Flash removable storage first. Use an imaging utility such as Raspberry Pi Imager or USBImager, then select the device from the firmware boot menu if necessary.
- Resolve boot issues carefully. Secure Boot may need adjustment, and Nvidia systems may require a driver setting. Do not overwrite an internal disk until the removable installation works.
- Let userdata expand. Do not power off while Batocera is creating or expanding its userdata partition.
- Add games and BIOS files legally. Use a network share, external storage or another supported transfer method.
- Pair controllers. For Bluetooth, open
CONTROLLER & BLUETOOTH SETTINGS → PAIR A BLUETOOTH DEVICEand put the controller into discovery mode. - Clean the library before scraping. Good filenames and correct disc organization improve metadata results.
- Prefer stable updates. From the system or game list, press
START, then chooseUPDATES & DOWNLOADS. Back up userdata first and avoid beta releases on a family or arcade machine.
Batocera’s live download page should be checked for the current release immediately before installation. Version numbers change, and a newer build is not automatically better for a carefully tuned setup.
Where Batocera falls short
- It is not a ROM provider. You remain responsible for legally sourced games and BIOS files.
- Hardware support is uneven. A listed device may still have driver, audio, wireless, suspend or performance limitations.
- Installation can require troubleshooting. Secure Boot, boot order, Nvidia drivers and storage selection can complicate the first boot.
- Newer systems need stronger hardware. Batocera’s presence on a device does not mean demanding 3D systems will run well.
- Emulators are not uniform. Hotkeys, shaders, savestates, achievements and netplay vary between cores and standalone emulators.
- Updates can disrupt a stable system. Back up userdata, read device-specific notes and do not update simply because a new build exists.
- It is not a conventional desktop. Users who also need productivity software, unrestricted PC gaming or the newest desktop emulator builds may be happier elsewhere.
Batocera versus the alternatives
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Batocera | Users wanting a broad, controller-first, appliance-like system | Device-specific troubleshooting and uneven advanced-feature support |
| Recalbox | Users who prefer a simpler, curated interface and its hardware ecosystem | May offer less appeal to users seeking Batocera’s configuration breadth |
| RetroPie | Raspberry Pi users who enjoy building and tuning a Linux setup | More manual assembly and maintenance |
| Lakka | Users wanting a minimalist RetroArch-centered environment | Less of Batocera’s broader frontend and living-room layer |
| Desktop emulators | Power users, PC gamers and people needing a full operating system | More windows, configuration and per-emulator management |
Final verdict
Batocera deserves to be called the king only with a clear definition of the crown. It is not the fastest emulator for every console, the easiest installation on every computer or the most flexible environment for every power user.
It is arguably the strongest all-in-one retro-emulation operating system for a dedicated living-room, arcade or handheld setup. Its winning feature is integration: one bootable environment combines a console-style interface, broad device coverage, polished library management, visual and latency controls, achievements, netplay, media playback and family-friendly administration.
Choose Batocera when the machine’s primary purpose is gaming and you want the experience to feel like a finished console. Choose RetroPie if you enjoy constructing a Raspberry Pi project, Lakka if you want a lean RetroArch system, or a conventional desktop setup if maximum emulator-by-emulator control matters more than appliance-like simplicity.
