AMD and Nvidia are taking different routes to AI-powered gaming PCs. Qualifying AMD Ryzen AI laptops can support Microsoft’s Copilot+ experiences because they include a sufficiently capable neural processing unit (NPU). Nvidia, meanwhile, is expanding local AI, gaming and Windows-agent capabilities through its RTX platform and announced RTX Spark systems. But an Nvidia GeForce GPU alone does not make a gaming laptop a Microsoft Copilot+ PC.
What “Copilot+ PC” actually means
Copilot+ is a Microsoft device category, not a generic label for any laptop that runs AI software. Microsoft defines Copilot+ PCs around a dedicated NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). The NPU handles supported AI workloads efficiently, while the CPU and GPU continue to manage general computing, graphics and games.

Microsoft delivers Copilot+ experiences through Windows and app updates, and availability can vary by processor, laptop model, Windows edition, region and language. Meeting the NPU threshold does not guarantee that every feature will appear immediately or be available everywhere. See Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC device and feature information for current compatibility details.

AMD’s contribution comes primarily from its Ryzen AI processor, not from the Radeon or GeForce graphics chip installed in a laptop. Ryzen AI processors include an XDNA NPU designed for local AI workloads. Microsoft lists AMD Ryzen AI 300-series systems alongside qualifying Snapdragon X and Intel Core Ultra 200V systems for Copilot+ features.

Microsoft began expanding Copilot+ experiences to Ryzen AI 300-series PCs in 2025, including features such as Live Captions, Cocreator, Restyle Image and Image Creator. AMD’s newer Ryzen AI 400-series desktop processors are advertised with up to 50 TOPS of NPU performance and support for Copilot+ experiences. AMD also claims up to 60 TOPS for Ryzen AI PRO 400-series mobile processors, although those chips are aimed mainly at business notebooks and mobile workstations.
A gaming laptop can therefore combine a qualifying AMD Ryzen AI processor with either a discrete Radeon GPU or a discrete Nvidia GeForce GPU. The NPU is the important component for Copilot+ eligibility; the discrete GPU is still responsible for much of the laptop’s gaming performance.
That distinction matters because “Ryzen” alone is not enough. Buyers should check the exact processor model and look for explicit Copilot+ support rather than assuming that every AMD gaming laptop qualifies.

Nvidia’s larger current announcement is RTX Spark, a Windows platform combining a Blackwell RTX GPU with a 20-core Grace CPU and up to 128GB of unified memory. Nvidia claims up to one petaflop of AI performance and describes the platform as suitable for gaming, creative applications, local AI models and Windows-native agents. Nvidia says RTX Spark laptops are expected in fall 2026 from ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft Surface and MSI, with Acer and Gigabyte models to follow.
Those are announced platform specifications and availability targets, not independent test results. The announcement does not say that existing GeForce gaming laptops will receive every Copilot+ feature or automatically become Copilot+ PCs. It is more accurate to describe Nvidia as building high-performance local-AI hardware for Windows while Microsoft controls the Copilot+ device definition and feature distribution.
Which AI features matter to gamers?
| Feature or technology | What it does | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| Auto Super Resolution | Microsoft’s operating-system-level AI upscaling for supported DirectX games. It is intended to improve image quality or performance without requiring a developer integration. | A supported Windows device, game and configuration. Microsoft has specifically associated the early public-preview rollout with the AMD-powered ROG Xbox Ally X. |
| DLSS | Nvidia’s game- and driver-supported upscaling and neural-rendering technology, often paired with ray tracing. | A compatible Nvidia RTX GPU and game support. DLSS is not a Copilot+ feature. |
| Live Captions and translation | Transcribes speech and can translate supported content, potentially helping with multiplayer communication, streams and recorded game video. | A supported Copilot+ device, language and region. Availability can change with updates. |
| Windows Studio Effects | Applies camera and microphone effects for streaming, video calls and voice communication. | Supported hardware and applications. It is useful around gaming, but it is not a frame-rate feature. |
| Recall and Click to Do | Helps locate previously viewed content and take actions from Windows. These are general Windows features rather than gaming technologies. | Supported Copilot+ hardware, Windows updates and applicable privacy, account, region and rollout requirements. Recall should not be treated as universally enabled. |
| Local AI assistants and models | Runs selected AI tools locally, potentially reducing cloud dependence and improving responsiveness. | The application determines whether it uses the NPU, CPU, integrated GPU or discrete GPU. RTX acceleration and Copilot+ eligibility are separate questions. |
Microsoft has also described Auto Super Resolution as a gaming-focused use of Copilot+ hardware. It should not be confused with DLSS or Radeon upscaling: the technologies have different compatibility rules, software paths and hardware requirements.

Some Windows APIs, creative applications and AI tools may use an RTX GPU independently of Copilot+ branding. That means an RTX laptop can support substantial local AI functionality without being marketed or recognized as a Copilot+ PC. Eligibility must be checked against the complete system: processor and NPU, Windows build, firmware, drivers, feature and region.
The same caution applies to external GPUs. An eGPU can accelerate games or AI applications, but it does not give a laptop a missing or insufficient system NPU.
Three types of laptop buyers should distinguish
- Qualifying AMD Ryzen AI gaming laptop: The most direct way to combine Microsoft Copilot+ access with a gaming laptop, provided the exact model has suitable graphics, cooling and power limits.
- RTX gaming laptop without a qualifying NPU: A strong choice for DLSS, ray tracing, Reflex and GPU-accelerated AI, but not automatically a Copilot+ PC.
- Thin-and-light Copilot+ laptop: May offer efficient local AI and longer battery life, but often lacks the discrete GPU performance expected for demanding games.
Microsoft Copilot+ versus AMD Ryzen AI versus Nvidia RTX
| Category | Microsoft Copilot+ | AMD Ryzen AI | Nvidia RTX and RTX Spark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary hardware | Dedicated NPU above 40 TOPS | Ryzen AI processor with an XDNA NPU | RTX GPU; RTX Spark combines a Blackwell GPU and Grace CPU |
| Main purpose | Windows AI experiences and services | NPU acceleration and a path to Copilot+ qualification | Gaming, rendering, local AI and agents |
| Examples | Recall preview, Click to Do, Live Captions, Studio Effects and improved Search | Supports Copilot+ experiences on qualifying systems | DLSS, ray tracing, Reflex, RTX-accelerated applications and local models |
| Who controls the branding? | Microsoft, subject to system and software requirements | AMD and the laptop maker provide the processor platform; Microsoft determines Copilot+ requirements | Nvidia controls RTX platform branding; it does not automatically confer Microsoft certification |
How to check a gaming laptop before buying
- Identify the exact CPU. Do not rely on “AI laptop,” “Ryzen” or “RTX” in a product title. Confirm the full processor model and whether Microsoft lists the system as Copilot+ compatible.
- Confirm the NPU. A powerful GPU and an NPU are different hardware blocks. Verify that the laptop has a qualifying NPU rather than assuming Tensor Cores count toward Microsoft’s requirement.
- Check the gaming hardware separately. Compare the discrete GPU, wattage, cooling system, MUX or graphics-routing options, memory and display resolution. Copilot+ status does not guarantee high frame rates.
- Check the software state. Look for the current Windows 11 edition and build, OEM firmware, NPU and graphics drivers, Windows Update status, and current Microsoft Store versions of apps such as Paint and Photos.
- Verify the feature you actually want. Determine whether it is available now, in preview, region-limited or dependent on a particular game, language or application.
- Consider privacy and power use. Local processing can reduce cloud dependence, but features such as Recall involve stored activity data and controls. A gaming laptop with a high-wattage CPU and discrete GPU may still have poor battery life despite having an NPU.
- Wait for independent testing when appropriate. RTX Spark’s performance, battery life, compatibility, pricing and real-world gaming behavior should not be judged from Nvidia’s announcement alone.
What remains uncertain about RTX Spark
As of August 18, 2026, Nvidia’s announcement establishes an expected fall 2026 launch window and partner list, but not confirmed retail stock or final pricing. It also does not establish which specific RTX Spark machines, if any, will carry official Microsoft Copilot+ branding.
Recommended Free Tools
Independent testing is still needed for Nvidia’s performance, battery and thinness claims, including laptops as thin as 14mm, as light as 3 pounds and with 14- to 16-inch displays. Compatibility should also be checked carefully if a model uses an unusual platform: games, anti-cheat systems, drivers and peripherals can expose issues that specifications alone do not reveal.

Which platform makes sense?
Choose a qualifying AMD Ryzen AI gaming laptop if official Copilot+ access is important and you want Microsoft’s NPU-based features alongside discrete graphics.
Choose a conventional Nvidia RTX gaming laptop if gaming performance, DLSS, ray tracing, Reflex and mature GPU-accelerated software matter more than the Copilot+ label. It may run local AI applications very well without qualifying as Copilot+.
Consider waiting for RTX Spark reviews if your priority is combining local AI agents, creative workloads and gaming in a relatively portable system. Treat Nvidia’s specifications and claims as announced targets until independent reviews and confirmed product listings are available.
Microsoft’s gaming AI features and Nvidia’s RTX ecosystem are complementary, not interchangeable. The best purchase depends on whether you want Windows-level Copilot+ features, established GPU gaming technologies, or a new platform designed to combine both gaming and local AI.
