The fastest way to raise FPS in Apex Legends is to reduce the graphics options that consume the most GPU time, then test one change at a time. Start with shadows, ambient occlusion, effects, volumetric lighting and model detail. After that, match the texture budget to your graphics card’s VRAM, test adaptive resolution and synchronization, enable NVIDIA Reflex if your GPU supports it, and only then decide whether a driver update or hardware upgrade is justified.

There is no universal FPS gain for every PC. Electronic Arts recommends running the game at the lowest graphics settings when maximum performance is the priority, while its recommended specification is aimed at smooth 60 FPS rather than a guaranteed result. Use the sequence below to find the bottleneck in your own system without sacrificing more image quality than necessary.

1. Lower the settings that cost the most performance

Open Settings > Video in Apex Legends and begin with the options that usually place the greatest load on the GPU. EA Help’s guidance is direct: “If you want to maximize your performance or frames-per-second (FPS), run Apex Legends on the lowest graphics settings possible.” You do not have to leave every option at its minimum permanently; lower the expensive settings first, check the result, and restore quality where your hardware has headroom.

Setting Performance-first change What you trade away
Ambient occlusion Lower or disable it Less contact shading around objects and surfaces
Dynamic spot shadows Lower or disable them Less detailed moving shadows
Sun-shadow coverage and detail Lower both options Less outdoor shadow range and definition
Effects detail Lower it Less detail in explosions, smoke and other effects
Model detail Lower it Less geometric detail on characters and scenery
Volumetric lighting Lower or disable it Less visible light haze and atmospheric depth
Impact marks Reduce them Fewer persistent bullet and collision marks
Ragdolls Lower them Less physical detail when characters fall

Change only a few settings per test. If you lower everything at once, you will not know which option solved a frame-rate problem or which one needlessly harmed image quality. A practical order is shadows and ambient occlusion first, followed by volumetric lighting and effects detail, then model detail, impact marks and ragdolls. Keep notes of the combination that feels smoothest rather than chasing a single peak FPS number that may produce uneven frame pacing.

2. Use adaptive resolution when the GPU cannot hold your target

EA’s PC video menu includes Adaptive Resolution FPS Target, with values from 0 (off) to 100. Turning it on requires TSAA. The feature dynamically reduces internal resolution when necessary so the game can stay closer to the target you choose. That can make aiming and camera movement feel steadier on a GPU that regularly falls below its desired frame rate.

How to configure it

  1. Open Settings > Video.
  2. Make sure TSAA is enabled.
  3. Set Adaptive Resolution FPS Target to a value that matches your realistic performance goal.
  4. Play a repeatable section, such as a busy drop or a fight with several effects on screen, and watch both smoothness and image clarity.
  5. If the picture becomes distracting or soft, reduce the target, turn the feature off, or lower other GPU-heavy settings instead.

Adaptive resolution is a consistency tool, not a way to create extra GPU power. Its benefit is a steadier experience when the graphics card is the limiting component; its cost is reduced sharpness during demanding moments. If your system already holds its target comfortably, leaving the setting at 0 preserves a consistently native-looking image.

3. Match the texture-streaming budget to your VRAM

The texture-streaming budget controls how much graphics memory Apex can use for textures. EA lists choices from None through 8 GB of VRAM. Select a budget that is appropriate for the amount of VRAM installed on your GPU rather than automatically choosing the largest value.

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Gaming OC 16G Graphics Card, 16GB 256-bit GDDR7, PCIe 5.0, WINDFORCE Cooling System, GV-N507TGAMING OC-16GD Video Card
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
  • Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system

Why the match matters

  • An overly high budget can increase memory pressure. That may lead to hitching or texture-management problems when other parts of the game also need VRAM.
  • An overly low budget reduces texture quality and can make surfaces look blurry, but it leaves more memory headroom.
  • If you are unsure of the card’s VRAM, check the GPU specification in Windows or the graphics card manufacturer’s documentation before choosing a budget.

Texture budget is separate from the settings that draw shadows and effects. A card can have enough shader performance for a high frame rate but still struggle when its VRAM is overcommitted. If stutter appears after increasing texture quality, step the budget down before changing every other option.

4. Test display mode and V-Sync together

Apex offers Full screen, Windowed and Borderless display modes. It also provides Disabled, 3x buffered, Adaptive and Adaptive (1/2 rate) V-Sync choices. These controls affect frame pacing, tearing and latency as well as the headline FPS number, so there is no setting that wins on every monitor and PC.

A sensible test procedure

  1. Pick one display mode and keep your other graphics settings unchanged.
  2. Test V-Sync disabled first if your priority is the lowest possible latency and you can tolerate tearing.
  3. Try Adaptive or 3x buffered if tearing is distracting or frame delivery feels uneven.
  4. Use Adaptive (1/2 rate) only if its lower synchronized rate feels smoother on your system than inconsistent full-rate rendering.
  5. Compare the combinations during actual matches, not only in the firing range.

Full screen can be a useful baseline for a dedicated gaming display, while Borderless is convenient when you switch between applications. The important result is consistent frame pacing on your monitor. A higher counter with visible hitching is usually less playable than a slightly lower, stable result.

5. Enable NVIDIA Reflex for responsiveness, not promised extra FPS

EA lists NVIDIA Reflex as available when the player has a supported NVIDIA GPU. Reflex is designed to reduce the delay between an input and the resulting frame. It targets latency and responsiveness; it is not a guarantee of a specific number of additional rendered frames.

When to use it

  • Enable Reflex if the option is available and your priority is quicker input response.
  • Judge it by how aiming and firing feel, not by expecting a fixed FPS multiplier.
  • If you use a non-NVIDIA GPU or the option is absent, skip this step and concentrate on the graphics and synchronization controls that your system exposes.

Reflex cannot compensate for a graphics card that is fundamentally below the game’s requirements. It is a latency adjustment to evaluate after the basic performance settings are under control.

6. Identify the bottleneck before buying hardware

EA’s current PC requirements provide a useful reference point. The minimum specification is intended to run the game, while the recommended specification is the company’s reference for smooth 60 FPS. Neither level guarantees a particular result on every map, patch or background workload.

Recommended for smooth 60 FPS Intel Core i5-3570K equivalent 8 GB RAM GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290 class, 8 GB GPU memory At least 75 GB free storage

When a GPU upgrade is justified

If your graphics card is below the minimum class, software changes may not provide enough headroom for the frame rate you want. A compatible GTX 970-class-or-newer card is a defensible starting point when shopping for an upgrade, but check the rest of the system first:

  • Confirm that the power supply has the required connectors and capacity.
  • Measure case clearance for the card’s length, height and thickness.
  • Check whether the CPU will become the new bottleneck after the GPU upgrade.
  • For a used card, verify its condition, cooling, warranty status and return policy.
  • Make sure the drive has at least the free space required by the current installation and updates.

Update drivers and reduce avoidable Windows load

Install graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer’s official source and keep Windows current. Restart after an update and retest Apex before changing several other variables. A vendor article dated December 16, 2025 claimed that a GPU driver update can improve FPS by 3%–15% depending on the game; that is a game-dependent vendor claim, not an Apex-specific benchmark or a promise for your PC.

  2. Open Settings > Apps > Startup and disable unnecessary programs that launch with Windows. Reboot and test again.
  3. Use Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files to remove unneeded temporary data when disk space is tight. This can recover storage, but clearing files is not a guaranteed FPS increase.
  4. After each Windows or driver change, repeat the same in-game test so you can tell whether the change affected stutter, frame pacing or average FPS.

How to diagnose stutter and frame drops

Use the symptom to choose the next change instead of lowering every option indefinitely.

  • Low FPS that improves immediately when shadows and effects are reduced: the GPU is likely the limiting component. Keep the lower-cost settings and raise image quality one option at a time.
  • Hitching after raising the texture budget: reduce the budget to relieve VRAM pressure.
  • Stable average FPS but uneven motion: compare display modes and V-Sync options for better frame pacing.
  • Sudden drops while other applications are busy: use Task Manager to identify background CPU, memory or disk load, then close or disable only software you trust.
  • No meaningful improvement after the lowest settings: compare your CPU, RAM and GPU with EA’s minimum and recommended classes before spending money on tweaks.

Do not expect one setting, driver or utility to repair every crash or frame-time problem. Apex patches, driver versions, thermals and background programs can change the result, so retest after major updates and keep the configuration that feels smooth in real matches.
