How to Fix a Windows 11 Black Screen Issue

A Windows 11 black screen can come from display settings, Explorer, a graphics driver, an incomplete update, or a boot-device failure. Follow these symptom-based steps from safe connection checks through Safe Mode, Recovery, and 8GB USB installation media.

A Windows 11 black screen is not one single fault. A blank display before sign-in, a screen that goes dark after login, a failure that began after an update, a blank screen with a movable cursor, and a blinking cursor each point to a different stage of startup. Begin with power and cable checks, reset the graphics driver with Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B, cycle display output with Windows + P, and use Windows Recovery and Safe Mode when those checks do not restore the picture.

Identify when the screen goes black

Note the exact point at which video disappears. This determines whether you should concentrate on the monitor connection, the Windows shell, a display driver, or the boot device.

What you see Likely stage Clues Best first path
Black before the manufacturer or Windows logo Power, monitor input, firmware, or hardware No Windows animation or sign-in screen appears Check power, cable, input source, another display, and whether the computer is actually starting
Black after the Windows logo but before sign-in Later boot phase, display driver, or an incomplete update The machine appears to start, but Windows never presents the sign-in page Reset the graphics driver, then use Windows Recovery and Safe Mode
Black immediately after signing in Display-output selection, Windows Explorer, driver, or user-profile startup Keyboard shortcuts may still work; a cursor may be visible Try Windows + P, then restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager
Black screen with a movable pointer Windows process or display driver The pointer responds even though the desktop is absent Open Task Manager and relaunch explorer.exe; repair the display driver in Safe Mode if needed
Black screen with a blinking cursor UEFI/BIOS boot-device detection A single blinking mark appears, often before Windows loads Use Recovery or boot-media troubleshooting rather than repeating desktop display shortcuts
Black screen that began after a driver or Windows update Incompatible driver or incomplete update The timing matches a recent software change Roll back the display driver in Safe Mode; use System Restore when available

A black screen is therefore a symptom, not proof that the monitor itself has failed. Keep the timing and the presence or absence of a cursor in mind as you work through the steps below.

Start with checks that cannot damage Windows

Confirm power and display connections

  1. Plug a laptop into AC power and verify that its charging indicator responds. On a desktop, confirm that the computer and monitor are both connected to power.
  2. On an external monitor, select the correct input and reseat the HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA cable at both ends. A loose cable or wrong input can look exactly like a Windows failure.
  3. Disconnect an external display and nonessential peripherals from a laptop, then restart with only the built-in screen attached.
  4. If possible, try another known-good cable or monitor. If a second display works, the original panel, cable, or input is the likely point of failure; continue Windows troubleshooting only if both displays remain blank.

Reset the graphics driver

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B once. Microsoft describes this as waking the screen by resetting the graphics driver. A beep or brief flicker indicates that Windows accepted the reset. Give the system several seconds before trying another shortcut.

Cycle the selected display

Windows can send video to a disconnected monitor after a dock, cable, or update change. Press Windows + P, tap P again to move through the choices, and press Enter to select one. The choices include PC screen only, duplicate, and extend. If you are using a laptop, select PC screen only first; if you need an external monitor, repeat the sequence and choose the mode that matches your setup.

Check whether Windows is still responsive

Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If the security screen appears, Windows is running even though the desktop is not visible. Choose Task Manager. In Task Manager, select Windows Explorer and choose Restart. If Windows Explorer is not listed, select File > Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter. A cursor-visible blank screen often clears as soon as the shell starts again.

Enter Safe Mode when the display stays blank

Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If video works there, a normal-startup driver, shell component, or recently changed software is more likely than a dead panel. You have two ways to reach it.

From a working sign-in screen

  1. At the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
  2. After the computer restarts to the recovery menu, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. When the numbered list appears, press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

When you cannot reach sign-in

  1. Hold the physical power button until the computer shuts down.
  2. Turn it on and, when Windows begins to load, hold the power button again to interrupt startup.
  3. Repeat the shutdown-and-start cycle two or three times. Windows should enter the Automatic Repair or Windows Recovery environment instead of continuing to the blank screen.
  4. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

If the recovery menu itself is not visible on the built-in display, connect a different monitor and repeat the cable and input checks. Recovery uses the same display hardware, so a panel or cable fault can hide the menu even when Windows is healthy.

Repair the display driver and Windows shell in Safe Mode

Update a stale graphics driver

  1. In Safe Mode, right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click the graphics adapter and choose Update driver. Follow the prompts to install an available driver.
  4. Restart normally and check whether the desktop appears.

Safe Mode may show a basic display driver rather than the normal vendor driver. That is expected. The purpose is to remove the failing normal-startup path, not to judge gaming performance while Safe Mode is active.

Roll back a driver that caused the blank screen

If the problem began immediately after a graphics-driver update, return to the previous driver instead of installing another one first. In Device Manager, open Display adapters, right-click the adapter, choose Properties, open the Driver tab, and select Roll Back Driver when that button is available. Restart Windows normally. The rollback option can be unavailable if Windows has no previous package to restore.

Disable or uninstall a malfunctioning device

When updating does not help, Microsoft’s broader stop-error guidance allows disabling or uninstalling the affected device from Device Manager. Use this as a diagnostic step: disable the display adapter, restart, and see whether Windows reaches the desktop with a basic driver. If the screen returns, reinstall a compatible driver from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer’s normal support channel, then re-enable the device if necessary. Do not remove several devices at once; changing one item at a time makes the result understandable.

Relaunch Explorer for a cursor-only blank screen

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, choose More details.
  2. Find Windows Explorer, select it, and choose Restart.
  3. If it is missing, select File > Run new task, type explorer.exe, and press Enter.

If Explorer starts but immediately stops again, the issue is likely more than a hidden taskbar. Continue with the driver rollback or update, and use System Restore from Windows Recovery if the blank screen began after a recent system change.

Handle a black screen that follows an update

A blank display after Windows Update or a graphics-driver update commonly involves an incompatible driver or an update that did not complete cleanly. First perform the graphics-reset and display-mode steps above. If those do not help, enter Safe Mode and roll back the display driver. From the same Windows Recovery environment, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options and use System Restore if a restore point from before the change exists. System Restore affects system files and settings, so read the selected restore point carefully before confirming.

If Safe Mode works but normal mode remains blank, avoid repeatedly forcing power-offs once you have reached Recovery. Make one change, restart, and observe the result. Repeated interruptions can make an incomplete update harder to diagnose.

Interpret a blinking cursor differently

A black screen with a blinking cursor is not the same as a blank desktop. Microsoft’s startup guidance says this pattern can mean that the UEFI or BIOS cannot find a boot device. In that situation, Windows may not have started at all, so Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B, Windows + P, and Explorer restarts are unlikely to solve it.

Use Windows Recovery to reach startup repair tools and System Restore. If the computer can open its firmware or boot menu, verify that the internal Windows drive is detected and that the normal Windows boot entry remains selected. Firmware menus differ by manufacturer, so use the computer maker’s documented key and labels rather than guessing. If the drive is not detected, stop before reinstalling Windows and investigate the storage connection or hardware.

By contrast, a black screen that appears after the Windows splash screen indicates a later boot or kernel phase. That pattern makes Safe Mode, a driver rollback, System Restore, or installation media more relevant than firmware boot-order changes.

Use Windows Recovery tools before reinstalling

Windows Recovery is the central escalation point when keyboard shortcuts and Safe Mode are not enough. From Troubleshoot > Advanced options, select the recovery tool that matches the failure:

  • Startup Settings: restart into Safe Mode so you can repair a display driver or launch the shell with minimal components.
  • System Restore: return system files and settings to an earlier restore point when one exists and the failure follows a recent change.
  • Startup repair options: use the automated startup tools when Windows cannot complete booting.

Keep personal files backed up whenever the computer is usable. Recovery options can repair startup, but they cannot guarantee recovery from a failing drive or damaged hardware. If both the built-in panel and a known-good external display remain blank before Windows loads, arrange manufacturer or professional hardware diagnosis rather than repeatedly changing software settings.

Create Windows 11 installation media only as an advanced step

Installation media is useful when the affected computer cannot reach Recovery or when you need to repair or reinstall Windows from a separate boot source. Microsoft’s Windows 11 download instructions require a blank USB flash drive with at least 8GB of space. Creating the media deletes all content on that USB drive.

  1. On another working computer, obtain Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation-media creator and connect a blank USB drive of at least 8GB.
  2. Back up anything on the USB first, then create the bootable media. The creation process erases the drive.
  3. Attach the USB to the affected PC and open its boot menu or change its boot order so the USB starts first. The key and menu wording depend on the manufacturer.
  4. Choose repair options before choosing a reinstall. If you reinstall, back up personal files first and understand that applications and settings may be removed.
  5. Confirm that the target computer has a compatible 64-bit CPU and meets Windows 11 requirements before proceeding with a new installation.

Use installation media for a boot or recovery problem, not as the first response to a display-mode mistake. A reinstall cannot repair a disconnected monitor cable, a failed panel, or a graphics adapter that is physically malfunctioning.

Choose the remedy that matches the symptom

Situation Try first Escalate to
Monitor says no signal, and no Windows logo appears Power, input, cable, another monitor Manufacturer hardware diagnosis
Windows is running and a cursor or security screen appears Windows + P; Task Manager; restart Explorer Safe Mode and display-driver repair
Black screen began immediately after a graphics-driver update Safe Mode and Roll Back Driver System Restore or driver removal/reinstallation
Black screen after the Windows logo Graphics-driver reset, then Recovery and Safe Mode System Restore or installation media
Blinking cursor only Recovery and boot-device checks Installation media or storage/firmware diagnosis

Final checks after the picture returns

  • Restart once normally to confirm that the fix survives a complete boot rather than only a Safe Mode session.
  • Reconnect external monitors and peripherals one at a time, checking the selected display mode after each connection.
  • Record which driver was installed or rolled back and which shortcut or Recovery option restored the display. That record prevents you from repeating an unsuccessful change.
  • If the black screen returns before the Windows logo, or if neither the built-in panel nor a known-good monitor ever displays firmware or Recovery, treat it as a hardware or boot-device problem and seek device-specific support.
