Yes, you can host a DayZ server without paying a hosting company—but only self-hosting on hardware you already own is potentially free indefinitely. Commercial providers such as PingPerfect and Survival Servers offer short trials, while Nitrado, 4NetPlayers, and Host Havoc are paid rentals rather than free hosts.

This guide separates those categories, explains the hardware and networking burden of self-hosting, and shows which option fits private groups, modders, public communities, and console players.

Quick verdict

Option Free? Platform Mods Best for Main catch
Windows self-hosting Potentially free PC Yes, with manual setup Beginners and private groups You provide the hardware, internet, security, and maintenance
Linux self-hosting Potentially free PC Yes, with more technical work Experienced administrators Command-line setup and troubleshooting
PingPerfect 48-hour trial PC Advertised Workshop support Testing managed hosting Trial is limited and intended to convert to paid hosting
Survival Servers Three-day trial PC Advertised mod support Testing a longer trial Check payment and renewal terms
Nitrado No PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 PC-focused Managed hosting and console support Recurring fee and platform-specific limitations
4NetPlayers No PC Check the selected configuration Low-cost small servers Prices and features can change

Host Havoc is another paid alternative and is worth considering if file management, Workshop installation, logs, backups, and restore tools matter more than the lowest advertised price.

What “free DayZ hosting” really means

Hosting offers commonly use “free” to describe several different arrangements:

  • Free self-hosting: you run the official DayZ server files on a computer and internet connection you already have. There is no hosting bill, but electricity, bandwidth, hardware wear, backups, and your time still have value.
  • Free trial: a commercial host lets you use a server temporarily. PingPerfect advertises 48 hours, while Survival Servers advertises three days. These are not permanent free servers.
  • Free cloud tier: a cloud provider supplies limited resources at no charge. Eligibility, resource caps, setup complexity, suspension policies, and changing terms can make this unsuitable for a persistent public server.
  • Free community server: another administrator pays for the server. You may avoid the bill, but you do not control its uptime, settings, moderation, persistence, or future.
  • Cheap paid hosting: a low monthly rental replaces much of the administration work. It is not free, even when an introductory discount is available.

For most readers, the honest choice is between free self-hosting, a short managed trial, and a low-cost rental.

Is DayZ server hosting officially supported?

Yes. Bohemia Interactive provides official DayZ server files and documents server requirements and configuration. PC players can use Steam Workshop content, and the game has a substantial ecosystem of community servers and mods. See the official DayZ FAQ, the DayZ Steam Workshop, and Bohemia’s server configuration documentation.

That support is primarily relevant to PC. Xbox and PlayStation hosting is a different proposition: console servers can be hosted, but they should not be presented as equivalent to a modded PC server with Steam Workshop support.

1. Self-host on Windows

Best for: beginners, testing, and private groups.

Running the official server files on an existing Windows PC is the most accessible genuinely free option. It works particularly well when a spare computer can remain online instead of competing with the machine being used to play DayZ.

Advantages

  • Familiar file management and graphical tools.
  • Straightforward Steam-based installation for many PC users.
  • Full control over configuration, mods, logs, and persistence.
  • No recurring hosting-company charge if the hardware and connection already exist.

Disadvantages

  • The computer must remain powered on and connected.
  • The server competes with the game client for CPU and memory if both run together.
  • You must handle firewall rules, router forwarding, updates, backups, crashes, and restarts.
  • A home connection may have inadequate upload capacity, changing IP addresses, or carrier-grade NAT.

Windows is usually the least intimidating starting point, but “easy” does not mean maintenance-free. Disable sleep and hibernation, configure automatic recovery after a reboot, and use a static local IP for the server machine.

2. Self-host on Linux

Best for: modders and administrators comfortable with terminals, remote access, and automation.

Linux is also listed in Bohemia Interactive’s DayZ server requirements. It can be a strong fit for an always-on machine because it avoids a separate Windows licensing cost and works well with scripted updates, scheduled restarts, monitoring, and backups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is technical complexity. You may need to manage permissions, services, logs, firewall rules, mod files, and updates from the command line. The requirements page does not mean that every distribution, cloud image, or third-party installation method is equally supported, so check compatibility with the exact server build and deployment method you choose.

Linux is the better free option when you already know Linux administration. For a first server, Windows generally involves less unfamiliar troubleshooting.

3. PingPerfect’s 48-hour trial

Best for: testing a managed control panel, mod workflow, backups, and server location before committing to a rental.

PingPerfect advertises a 48-hour free trial for DayZ, along with support for up to 100 players, Steam Workshop mods, DDoS mitigation, nightly backups, 21 locations, free web hosting, and 24/7 support. These are provider-advertised features, not independent performance measurements. The provider also states that the free trial is limited to one per account and that continuing with the server requires contacting support before the trial ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During research, the page displayed a 10-slot plan at $15.99 per month, a 30-slot plan at $27.95, and a 40-slot high-performance plan at $62.51. Prices, availability, taxes, billing terms, and features can change, so verify the current signup page before paying.

Choose this option if you want to test a managed server quickly. Do not choose it expecting an indefinitely free community server.

See PingPerfect’s current DayZ trial and plans.

4. Survival Servers’ three-day trial

Best for: readers who need several days to test a private server, a small mod list, or a community concept.

Survival Servers advertises a three-day DayZ trial and lists locations including Los Angeles, Seattle, Dallas, New York, and Miami, with additional European and Asian locations available for paid configurations. Its page also displays larger paid configurations, including a 127-slot option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The page showed a promotional first-month price of $14.06 for 10 slots, reduced from $18.75, and $63.75 for 127 slots, reduced from $85. These were promotional figures visible during research, not guaranteed current prices.

See Survival Servers’ current DayZ trial and plans.

5. Nitrado

Best for: beginners, console owners, and readers who prefer a mainstream managed panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nitrado offers DayZ hosting for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. During research, its US page displayed 8 slots for $12.99 per 30 days, 10 slots for $16.19 per 30 days, and 20 slots for $24.99 per 30 days. The page also listed custom configurations from 8 to 125 slots, along with password controls, support, backups, DDoS protection, and mod or plugin management claims.

Nitrado is not free. Its value is convenience and platform coverage, not zero cost. PC users should also distinguish ordinary configuration and mod management from the level of filesystem and process control available through a self-hosted server. Console hosting should not be described as having the same Steam Workshop modding capability as PC.

Prices depend on geography, currency, taxes, platform, duration, and configuration.

See Nitrado’s current DayZ plans.

6. 4NetPlayers: a low-cost paid fallback

Best for: small groups that want a low recurring price rather than a free trial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4NetPlayers is a paid host, not a free option. Its page displayed a 10-slot plan at $6.83 per month including tax and a 16-slot plan at $18.46 per month including tax, with a first-month discount shown for the 16-slot configuration. It also lists locations across North America, Europe, and other regions.

This can make sense when your group has outgrown home hosting or does not want to maintain a server machine. Confirm Workshop support, file access, mod handling, backup coverage, and the exact renewal price before ordering.

See 4NetPlayers’ current DayZ plans.

Alternative: Host Havoc

Host Havoc is another paid fallback, displayed from $18.50 per month during research. It advertises Workshop installation, a web console, file management, log viewing, off-site backups, restore tools, and hardware such as Xeon and Ryzen CPUs, DDR4/DDR5 memory, NVMe storage, and uplinks up to 10 Gbps.

Those are advertised specifications and features, not independently verified uptime or latency results. Host Havoc is most relevant when administration tools and recovery features matter more than finding the lowest slot price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See Host Havoc’s current DayZ hosting details.

Hardware requirements for self-hosting

Bohemia Interactive’s published baseline lists:

  • Windows Server 2012–2016 or Windows 10 and later.
  • Linux.
  • Intel dual-core 2.4 GHz or AMD dual-core Athlon 2.5 GHz as example minimum processors.
  • 6 GB RAM.
  • 2.5 GB storage.

See the official DayZ server requirements for the current documentation.

These are baseline requirements, not a promise that a 6 GB machine will comfortably run a large public modded server. Higher player counts, custom maps, aggressive AI, persistence-heavy economies, logging, monitoring, and multiple mods all require headroom. An SSD is strongly preferable for installation, logs, persistence, and general server operation.

A normal gaming PC can host DayZ, but running the server and client on the same machine means both processes share CPU, memory, storage, and network resources. A spare wired machine is a better arrangement for a persistent group or public server.

Basic self-hosting setup

  1. Use official files. Obtain the dedicated server through the supported Steam distribution method. Avoid executables from unofficial mirrors.
  2. Create a separate server directory. Keep server files, profiles, logs, missions, and backups organized separately from the normal client installation where practical.
  3. Edit serverDZ.cfg. Set the server name, password, player limit, mission, time settings, and administrative options. Preserve an untouched backup before making changes.
  4. Select ports. The official configuration documentation uses 2302 as the example server port and 2305 as the Steam query port.
  5. Build the launch command. Common parameters include -config=serverDZ.cfg, -port=2302, -profiles=<profile path>, -mission=<mission path>, -mod=<client-visible mods>, and -serverMod=<server-side mods>.
  6. Allow the server through the firewall. Permit the executable and configured ports. Do not disable the firewall entirely.
  7. Forward ports on the router. Forward the chosen server and query ports to the server machine’s static local IP. Exact requirements vary by router, firewall, port selection, IPv4 or IPv6, and provider.
  8. Start the server and inspect logs. The profile directory is used for logs, dumps, BattlEye, BEC, and RCON-related files. The official configuration documentation explains the relevant paths and parameters.
  9. Add mods gradually. Add one mod or dependency at a time, record load order, and keep a known-good launch command.
  10. Back up persistence before updates. Copy persistence data before updating the server or a major mod. Test restoration separately where possible.

How DayZ mods affect the choice

PC Workshop modding is powerful, but it increases administration risk:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Client-visible mods are generally required by players as well as the server and are loaded through -mod.
  • Server-side mods run on the server and are loaded separately through -serverMod; clients do not necessarily install them.
  • Map mods often bring dependencies and increase storage, update, and backup complexity.
  • Economy and gameplay mods can affect persistence and may break after updates or conflicts.

A server can start successfully but still kick players because their mod versions differ. Incorrect load order, missing keys, renamed dependencies, and incompatible updates can also make the server invisible or prevent connections.

Network and administration requirements

Home hosting is only practical when the connection can accept players reliably. Check for:

  • Enough upload bandwidth for the intended player count.
  • Stable latency to the majority of players.
  • A reachable public IPv4 address or a workable alternative to carrier-grade NAT.
  • Router support for port forwarding rather than double NAT.
  • A stable local IP for the server.
  • Firewall rules that permit the server without exposing unrelated services.
  • Automatic restart and recovery after power or internet outages.
  • A plan for changing public IP addresses.

A public server also needs rules, moderation, admin coverage, ban procedures, wipe announcements, exploit reporting, and a recovery policy. A hosting panel cannot replace those responsibilities.

How to choose

  • Choose Windows self-hosting for a few friends, testing, and the least technical free setup.
  • Choose Linux self-hosting if you already administer Linux and want scripted restarts, updates, and backups.
  • Choose PingPerfect if a 48-hour managed trial is enough to validate mods and panel features.
  • Choose Survival Servers if you want a three-day trial, while carefully checking conversion and cancellation terms.
  • Choose Nitrado if console support or a familiar managed service matters more than the lowest PC price.
  • Choose 4NetPlayers if the lowest displayed recurring price among these reviewed paid options is the priority.
  • Choose Host Havoc if file tools, logs, Workshop installation, off-site backups, and restores are more important than minimum price.

Compare plans using the same slot count and record the currency, tax status, billing period, promotional status, renewal price, location, backup policy, mod support, and available administrative access. A 10-slot plan and a 127-slot plan are not meaningful price comparisons.

Troubleshooting the common failures

The server is not visible

Confirm that the server process is running, the configured ports match the firewall and router rules, the query port is reachable, and the machine is not behind carrier-grade NAT or double NAT. Check the profile logs before changing multiple settings.

Players are kicked while joining

Compare client and server mod versions, install missing dependencies, verify keys, and review load order. Add or update mods one at a time rather than changing the whole collection at once.

The server crashes after an update

Return to the last known-good mod and server combination, inspect logs, and restore the pre-update persistence backup if necessary. Do not overwrite the only working copy.

Persistence is corrupted

Stop the server, preserve the affected files for diagnosis, and restore the newest known-good backup. If the world is important, keep routine off-site or provider-managed backups rather than relying on restart functionality alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The router cannot forward ports

Check whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, whether another router is creating double NAT, and whether the local server address is fixed. If the ISP cannot provide a reachable connection, a managed host is usually more practical than repeatedly changing firewall settings.

A trial is about to expire

Read the provider’s conversion and cancellation terms immediately. Download configuration and persistence data if the provider permits it, and confirm whether the data can be retained when converting to a paid plan or moving elsewhere.

Final recommendation

For genuinely free, long-term testing, self-host the official DayZ server on spare Windows or Linux hardware. For low-risk managed testing, use PingPerfect’s 48-hour trial or Survival Servers’ three-day trial, treating both as temporary offers. For permanent convenience, pay for a managed rental and compare the real slot, location, tax, renewal, backup, and mod-management details—not just the headline price.

PC is the right choice for Steam Workshop modding. Console players should evaluate console-specific hosting separately, with Nitrado offering a mainstream option for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. If you plan to monetize a community server, consult Bohemia Interactive’s current DayZ support and monetization rules rather than assuming that every donation, queue, cosmetic, or perk arrangement is allowed.
