Foundation is a gridless medieval city builder. Instead of placing every structure on a rigid rectangular grid, you guide a settlement that grows around roads, resources, services, terrain, and the needs of its villagers.

“Gridless” does not mean consequence-free. Housing still needs suitable space, workers must travel between jobs and storage, services need to reach residents, and production chains depend on resources, processing, transport, and demand. The freedom to create an attractive organic town also means that careless early layouts can become inefficient later.

- Roads, desirability, zoning, and settlement planning
- Trade with neighboring settlements and taxation
- Territory expansion and modular monuments

Foundation is primarily a settlement and management game, not a combat-first real-time strategy game. Military or royal objectives exist, but the central challenge is making a growing medieval community function.
Is Foundation free to download?
No. Foundation is commercially sold. A website promising a free full version, cracked installer, repack, torrent, or unofficial mirror is not an appropriate download source and may expose your PC or accounts to malware.

How to download Foundation on Windows
Install Foundation through Steam
- Open the official Foundation Steam page.
- Sign in to your Steam account and purchase the base game or an available bundle.
- Open the Steam desktop client and select Library.
- Select Foundation in your library.
- Click Install.
- Choose an installation drive and confirm the download.
- Wait for Steam to install any updates, then select Play.
The Steam listing identifies Foundation as a single-player game and lists Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing. Feature eligibility can depend on Steam’s current policies and account settings.
Install Foundation through GOG
- Open the official Foundation page on GOG.
- Purchase the Standard Edition or Supporter Edition.
- Install the game with GOG Galaxy, or open your GOG account library and download the offline installer.
- Run the installer and choose a destination folder.
- Launch Foundation directly from Windows or through Galaxy.
GOG states that Galaxy is optional and that the game is DRM-free. The offline installer is therefore the better fit if you want to keep an installable copy outside a client-dependent workflow. Galaxy-specific features such as cloud synchronization and achievement support are separate from the offline installer experience.

Choose GOG if you want

- An offline installer
- The option to play without GOG Galaxy after downloading and installing
Do not assume that a save will automatically transfer between Steam and GOG. The official FAQ documents separate local save repositories for the two platforms, but that does not establish seamless cross-store portability. Back up your saves before changing storefronts.
Foundation system requirements
The following are the published Windows requirements. They are not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, especially in a large settlement with many villagers, buildings, decorations, or mods.

Before installing, check more than the headline GPU model:
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit.
- Check available RAM, not only the amount installed.
- Confirm your graphics card’s VRAM.
- Update graphics drivers.
- Make sure there is enough free storage for the game, updates, saves, mods, and temporary files.
- Be cautious with integrated graphics. They should not be assumed to meet the published GTX 960 or R9 290 minimum.
GOG lists the game at approximately 3.4 GB, but leave additional free space for updates and user data. Laptop graphics chips can perform differently from desktop cards with similar names.
Foundation’s main features
Gridless settlement design
Roads, homes, workplaces, and services can develop in organic patterns rather than following a fixed square grid. This makes it possible to create villages that look more natural and adapt to terrain.

The trade-off is planning. A scattered town may look appealing but create long walking routes, isolated services, and inefficient deliveries. Good layouts balance appearance with travel time and access.
Modular buildings and monuments
Major buildings can be assembled from individual parts. You can adjust layouts and create customized monuments instead of choosing only from a small set of identical prefabricated structures.
Leave open space for important buildings. Filling every attractive area with early housing can force expensive or awkward reconstruction when the settlement gains access to larger monuments and specialized services.
Painting and zoning tools
Painting tools help guide residential development, roads, forest extraction, patrol areas, and other settlement choices. They are guidance systems rather than perfectly deterministic blueprints: villagers, resources, desirability, and available services still influence how the town develops.

Villagers and interconnected needs
You assign jobs, provide housing, satisfy needs, and build services as the population grows. A problem in one system can spread to others. For example, a shortage of workers can reduce production, which can limit construction or trade, which can delay services and population growth.

Production chains and logistics
Resources pass through extraction, processing, storage, transport, and consumption. Production is not simply an instant point-to-point transaction. Workers need time to travel, goods need places to be stored, and demand must justify expansion.
Estates of the Realm
Progression is organized around three broad estates:
- Labor: the workforce and productive side of the settlement
- Clergy: religious development and related services
- Kingdom: royal, territorial, and prestige-oriented progression
You can specialize in one estate or combine them as your settlement develops.

Trade, taxation, and royal objectives
Foundation includes trade with neighboring settlements, taxation, territory, and objectives connected to the kingdom. These systems add economic and administrative pressure without turning the game into a conventional combat-focused RTS.
Difficulty, Aspirations, and Creative mode
Different difficulty settings and Aspirations provide more structured goals, while Creative mode lets you experiment with layouts and building tools with fewer economic constraints. Creative mode is particularly useful for learning how roads, modular buildings, and visual planning work before starting a more demanding settlement.
Beginner tips for a stronger first settlement
1. Keep the opening settlement compact
Place early housing, food production, storage, workplaces, and essential services within a practical service area. Villagers who spend most of their day walking have less time to work, deliver goods, or satisfy needs.
2. Secure food before expanding housing
Every population increase creates additional demand. Establish reliable food-producing jobs and storage before adding homes aggressively. Build growth in stages instead of treating empty residential space as an invitation to expand immediately.

Extraction and processing should be close enough to useful resources to keep logistics manageable. Do not cover the entire map with permanent zones at the start, though. Leave room for roads, services, housing, and later expansion.

4. Inspect the interface instead of guessing
A settlement can look healthy while suffering from unfilled jobs, missing housing, low desirability, inadequate storage, absent goods, or distant services. Use the relevant UI panels to identify the cause before constructing another building.
5. Paint only the areas you can support
Overly broad residential or extraction zones can encourage development in places that are difficult to reach. Start with controlled zones and widen them after food, storage, employment, and services are stable.
6. Expand production chains gradually
New buildings can create secondary demands for workers, tools, processed goods, storage, and services. A useful progression is:
- Basic food and shelter
- Stable employment and storage
- Reliable production chains
- Services and desirability
- Territory and monuments
- Specialized or prestige construction
7. Reserve space for roads and monuments
Organic layouts are difficult to reorganize once every gap has been filled. Keep corridors and open areas available for future roads, large buildings, and modular monuments.
8. Use Creative mode to learn
If the economy feels overwhelming, use Creative mode to practise the building tools and test layouts without the same pressure as a normal settlement.

Mods
Foundation has integrated mod support. The official FAQ says mods can be downloaded through the in-game browser and are hosted through mod.io. Before installing a large collection:
- Keep an unmodded save available.
- Add mods gradually so conflicts are easier to identify.
- Read compatibility notes.
- Back up saves before major changes.
- Expect major game updates to affect some mods or older saves.
The official modding documentation notes that modding capabilities and documentation can evolve. The Ctrl + Shift + R shortcut is documented as a mod-development or testing control, not as a general refresh command that every player needs.

Troubleshooting Foundation on Windows
The game will not launch
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and meets the published requirements.
- Update your graphics driver.
- Allow the store client to finish pending updates.
- Use the client’s standard file-verification or repair option.
- Temporarily remove recently installed mods.
- Restart the PC and try launching without other demanding applications.
File verification and driver updates are standard platform troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that every launch problem has the same cause.
Performance declines in a large city
Meeting the minimum specification does not guarantee the same performance in a large settlement as in a new game. Population simulation, dense construction, decoration, high-resolution assets, and mods can increase the workload. Lower graphics settings, close background applications, update drivers, and test with mods disabled before deciding that the installation is defective.
Saves are missing
Check whether you launched the same storefront version and whether cloud synchronization is enabled. Then inspect the local and cloud-related paths above. Do not overwrite or delete folders until you have copied them to a separate backup location.
A mod causes errors or missing content
Disable recently added mods, return to a clean test save, and re-enable content one item at a time. Keep foundation.log available when diagnosing problems. A major game update may require a mod update, and a save created with a mod may not behave correctly after that mod is removed.
How to report a crash or bug
The official Foundation FAQ asks for:
- A detailed description
- Reproduction steps where possible
- The
foundation.logfile - A DXDIAG report

Standard Edition vs. Supporter Edition
The Standard Edition is the straightforward choice if you want the base game. The Supporter Edition includes Foundation, the soundtrack, and the Guivre Garden DLC, according to the Steam listing and GOG’s Supporter Edition page.
Choose the Supporter Edition only if those extras are worth the additional cost to you. It is not required to play the core city-building game. Check the live store page for the current price difference rather than relying on an old sale listing.
Is Foundation worth downloading?
Foundation is a strong fit if you want a relaxed but interconnected medieval settlement game, enjoy designing organic towns, and like balancing villagers, resources, logistics, services, and progression. Its gridless construction and modular buildings give it a more flexible visual style than a rigid tile-based builder.
It is less suitable if your priority is combat-first RTS action, precise fixed-grid urban planning, or a completely hands-off simulation. Large settlements can also demand more from a PC than the minimum specification suggests, so treat the published requirements as a starting point rather than a performance promise.
For orientation, Manor Lords is a medieval alternative with a stronger tactical and military emphasis; Banished focuses on survival-oriented settlement management; Cities: Skylines focuses on modern infrastructure; and the Anno series emphasizes elaborate production, trade, and economic chains. These are different design goals, not universal quality rankings.
