The most useful choice is the one your players can execute while preserving the balance you want in possession and defense. This ranking compares seven familiar shapes by midfield coverage, width, attacking spacing, defensive exposure, and role demands—not by an unsupported win-rate claim.
How to read this FM24 formation ranking
Think of a formation as the starting arrangement, not a complete tactic. Sports Interactive’s FM24 guidance treats roles and player instructions as important complements to the shape, and its defensive guidance emphasizes building a solid defensive structure around positions, formations, and player attributes. See the official guidance on wide-player roles and official defensive guidance.
The order below is a practical recommendation for different squad profiles, not a claim that one setup wins more matches. FM24 community uploads and third-party advice feature shapes such as 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3, 4-2-4, and 3-4-2-1, but those examples do not establish comparative match outcomes. The Steam Workshop listing is a changing collection of user tactics, not a controlled performance study.
1. 4-2-3-1: the most adaptable starting point
The 4-2-3-1 puts a striker ahead of three attacking midfielders, with two central midfielders or defensive midfielders behind them. It is a strong first option when your squad has a natural central attacking midfielder and enough wide players to threaten both flanks.

- Midfield: Two deeper midfielders can protect the central lanes and support buildup, but their roles need to complement each other rather than leave both too passive or too adventurous.
- Width: The wide attackers can hold the touchline or move inside. Sports Interactive’s FM24 guidance discusses choosing between Winger, Inverted Winger, and Inside Forward roles according to the player and intended movement.
- Attack: The central attacking midfielder connects midfield to the lone striker, giving the team a clear route through the middle.
- Risk: If the wide players and attacking midfielder do little defensive work, the two deeper midfielders can be outnumbered or pulled apart in transition.
- Best fit: A squad with a capable number 10, useful wide attackers, and two midfielders able to share defensive and creative duties.
Third-party FM24 coverage has recommended 4-2-3-1 variants, and the Steam Workshop contains community examples. Those are useful evidence that the shape is widely discussed, not proof of a universal advantage.
2. 4-3-3: control the center and use the full width
A 4-3-3 typically pairs a single central striker with two wide forwards and a three-player midfield. It suits squads with several good central midfielders and attackers comfortable starting from wide positions.

In addition, a number of new ‘real world’ transfer clauses have been added, such as the facility to loan a player back to the club he’s just been bought from and the option to offer a combination of cash and loan players, as well as new contract clauses such as a sub bench appearance fee. On top of this, the old ‘turn-based’ system of transfer negotiations can now be done two ways, the tried and tested system and a new ‘live’ system, similar to that used in FM’s contract negotiations.

- Midfield: Three central players can offer more passing options and help contest the middle. Decide which player anchors the group and which are free to advance.
- Width: The front three can stretch the defense, while full-backs may provide additional width if your wide forwards cut inside.
- Attack: The wide forwards can support the striker from either side, but they need suitable movement and attributes for the role you assign.
- Risk: An aggressive midfield and high-advancing full-backs can leave space behind them. The single striker may also become isolated if midfield support arrives late.
- Best fit: A squad with a reliable holding midfielder, mobile central players, and at least two effective wide forwards.
A community discussion titled “Advice on formations please!” reports one player’s success with 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, and sometimes 4-2-4. That is an individual experience, not representative evidence of results.
3. 4-2-4: maximize forward pressure
The 4-2-4 commits four players to the forward line, usually with two wide attackers and two strikers. It is a direct, attack-heavy option for a squad that can create pressure and chances without relying on a large midfield.

- SAFE AND DURABLE: Made from high-quality plastic, this NFL board game is built to last. It includes small parts, so it's recommended for ages twelve and up.
- Midfield: Only two central midfielders cover the space behind the forwards, so their positioning and work rate matter greatly.
- Width: The wide forwards can attack from the flanks, but the team may need full-backs to support them if they move inside.
- Attack: Two strikers give you more presence in the box and can create different movement patterns, provided their roles do not compete for the same space.
- Risk: The midfield can be outnumbered, especially when possession is lost or opponents build through the center. It can also become difficult to connect defense to attack cleanly.
- Best fit: A team with two compatible strikers, dangerous wide attackers, and midfielders capable of covering ground and making sensible decisions under pressure.
Use it when the attacking trade-off is intentional, rather than assuming that adding forwards automatically produces better attacking play.
4. 3-4-2-1: create central combinations from a back three
The 3-4-2-1 uses three central defenders, two wide midfielders or wing-backs, two attacking midfielders, and one striker. It can suit a squad with strong center-backs and flank players able to contribute across the pitch.
- Midfield: The two central midfielders share the middle with the two players behind the striker, creating options for short combinations and pressing.
- Width: Wing-backs are usually the main source of width. They need enough stamina and defensive ability to cover long distances.
- Attack: Two attacking midfielders can work close to the striker, but their roles should create complementary runs rather than crowding the same channel.
- Risk: If wing-backs are caught high, the outside center-backs may have to defend wide areas. A thin central midfield can also be exposed against a team with three central players.
- Best fit: A squad with three capable center-backs, dependable wing-backs, and creative players suited to operating between the lines.
FM24 community tactic listings include 3-4-2-1 examples. Treat uploads as tactical inspiration; they do not establish that the shape outperforms alternatives.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. 4-4-2: keep the roles clear and the strikers connected
The 4-4-2 lines up two strikers ahead of a four-player midfield, commonly with two central midfielders and two wide players. Its appeal is a clear two-forward partnership and a compact-looking starting structure.

- Includes 7+ and 14+ modes with harder questions: Choose your challenge level, with easier questions for kids and tougher ones for die-hard fans and trivia pros.
- Midfield: Two central midfielders can be outnumbered by three-player midfields, so their roles and the wide midfielders’ contribution to the middle become important.
- Width: Wide midfielders can provide natural width, though their defensive responsibilities may limit how freely they attack.
- Attack: Two strikers can combine, occupy center-backs, and offer more than one target in the box.
- Risk: The shape can become disconnected if the gap between midfield and strikers grows or if the central pair cannot retain possession.
- Best fit: A squad with two complementary forwards, reliable wide midfielders, and central players who can cover the ground between the lines.
6. 4-1-4-1: protect the center without abandoning midfield support
The 4-1-4-1 sets one player in front of the defense, four across midfield, and one striker. It is a useful option when you want a clear central screen and a bank of midfield support behind a lone forward.
- Midfield: The holding player can shield the center-backs while the four ahead provide passing options. The advanced midfield roles need to help the striker rather than leave them alone.
- Width: Wide midfielders can defend the flanks and support attacks; full-backs can add width where appropriate.
- Attack: The lone striker needs support from midfield runners or the team may struggle to sustain attacking pressure.
- Risk: A cautious setup can leave too much distance between the striker and the rest of the team. An overextended holding midfielder may also be left isolated.
- Best fit: A squad with a dependable defensive midfielder, hard-working wide players, and a striker comfortable leading the line alone.
7. 5-2-3: defend with numbers, attack through the flanks
The 5-2-3 uses three center-backs, two wing-backs, two central midfielders, and a front three. It offers a deeper defensive base while keeping three players available for counterattacks.
- Midfield: Two central midfielders have to cover a large area and may be outnumbered in the middle.
- Width: Wing-backs carry much of the width, so their stamina, positioning, and defensive reliability are central to the system.
- Attack: The front three can provide an outlet for transitions, but they need enough support to keep possession and avoid becoming isolated.
- Risk: If wing-backs are pinned back, the attack can lose width; if they advance together, the team can be vulnerable behind them.
- Best fit: A squad with three trustworthy center-backs, strong wing-backs, and forwards able to attack space quickly.
Choose the shape your players can actually perform
Before committing to a formation, check the roles and attributes needed for its most demanding positions. Official FM24 guidance stresses that player roles and instructions complement the formation, and its defensive guidance highlights the importance of defensive shape, positions, and attributes.
- Start with the available players. Identify your strongest central midfielders, natural wide players, strikers, and center-backs. Prefer a structure that uses those strengths over one that requires several out-of-position starters.
- Decide where the team should get its width. Choose whether it comes mainly from wingers, wide forwards, wide midfielders, or wing-backs. Then check that the players tasked with providing it can handle their attacking and defensive work.
- Set the defensive structure deliberately. Decide how many players should stay behind the ball, who protects the space in front of the center-backs, and what happens when a full-back or wing-back advances.
- Assign roles to solve spacing problems. Make sure midfielders, wide players, and forwards offer distinct movement and passing options instead of occupying the same lanes.
- Reassess after matches. If the center is repeatedly exposed, the striker is isolated, or the wide players are not contributing as intended, adjust roles or structure to address that specific problem.
The seven shapes above are starting points, not fixed instructions. The best choice for your save depends on the squad, the roles you assign, and how you want the team to defend and attack.
