The strongest verified rhythm-shooter picks range from strict beat-timed FPS combat to VR gunplay and an abstract music-reactive rail shooter.

Looking for games like Metal: Hellsinger or BPM: Bullets Per Minute, where you shoot on the beat? Those are the clearest fits, but rhythm shooters also include VR action built around music and abstract rail shooters where your actions shape the soundtrack. This is a ranked shortlist of four games with verified details—not seven: the available evidence does not support naming three more as current, well-matched picks.

How this ranking works

The ranking favors how directly rhythm governs shooting, then considers action style, platform requirements, and the soundtrack’s role. The first two games make beat timing central to shooting; the next two widen the genre into VR and music-reactive rail-shooter territory. That broader definition is why Rez Infinite appears here even though it does not use the same beat-aim-shoot loop as BPM.

1. BPM: Bullets Per Minute

BPM: Bullets Per Minute is the most literal choice for players who want an FPS built around acting on the beat. Developer Awe Interactive describes it as a rhythm-action FPS roguelike in which shooting, jumping, and dodging sync to an epic rock soundtrack. Its beat-governed actions make timing part of the core combat loop rather than an optional flourish. Steam lists Awe Interactive as developer and publisher and gives its release date as September 15, 2020; the official game site presents the same rhythm-action premise.

2. Metal: Hellsinger

Metal: Hellsinger is the pick for players drawn to a heavy-metal campaign shooter. Shooting on the beat improves attacks, while successful timing intensifies the music and destruction, according to PlayStation’s guide to the game. Its soundtrack features vocalists including Serj Tankian of System of a Down, Matt Heafy of Trivium, and Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy. That metal identity distinguishes it from BPM’s rock-backed roguelike framing; which one suits you better depends on the musical and action style you want.

3. Pistol Whip

Pistol Whip turns rhythm shooting into VR action: players shoot, duck, and dodge through film-inspired scenes. It belongs on a rhythm-shooter list, but it is not a conventional flatscreen FPS. Cloudhead Games lists PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest, Steam VR, and Pico among its platforms. The developer’s FAQ confirms that the game is fully playable on Quest 3 through backwards compatibility with Quest 2 titles. Choose it if you want physical movement and VR gunplay rather than a standard monitor-and-controller shooter.

4. Rez Infinite

Rez Infinite is the experimental entry: a music-reactive rail shooter rather than a strict game of aiming and firing on every beat. PlayStation describes it as a synesthesia shooter in which actions create music as you destroy viruses in a digital world. Its Area X is designed for VR, extending the game’s audiovisual presentation. PlayStation’s game page helps explain the genre boundary: Rez Infinite fits a broad rhythm-shooter definition because play and music are intertwined, but it is not mechanically equivalent to BPM.

Why the list has four entries, not seven

The title asks for seven, but a ranking should not fill its final places with names that have not been validated. Beat Hazard, Audica, and Roboquest or Roboquest VR surfaced as adjacent possibilities, but the available authoritative details do not establish their current platforms, relevant mechanics, or fit well enough to recommend them here. Naming them as ranked picks would overstate what is known.
