For a smaller or simpler build, choose the DeepCool AK400. The Noctua NH-U12S redux is the better premium single-tower option when quiet operation, mounting confidence and long-term support matter most.
The Ryzen 5 5600X is a 65 W, six-core/12-thread AM4 processor supplied with AMD’s Wraith Stealth cooler, so an aftermarket cooler is not mandatory for stock operation. A good air cooler can nevertheless reduce noise, improve sustained-load temperatures and provide more headroom for PBO or future upgrades. What the Ryzen 5 5600X needs from a cooler
AMD lists the Ryzen 5 5600X with six cores, 12 threads, a 3.7 GHz base clock, up to 4.6 GHz boost, a 65 W default TDP, AM4 socket support and a 95°C maximum operating temperature. The boxed processor includes the Wraith Stealth cooler. AMD’s specifications therefore point to a straightforward conclusion: a cooler upgrade is optional for a stock system, not a requirement.

A quality 120 mm single-tower cooler is normally sufficient for gaming and ordinary desktop work. A dual-tower model adds thermal and acoustic headroom for sustained rendering, aggressive fan curves, PBO or a later AM4 upgrade, but its extra capacity may provide only a modest practical benefit during gaming. A 240 mm-or-larger AIO is not necessary merely because the processor is a Ryzen 5.
Temperature readings also depend on ambient temperature, case airflow, mounting pressure, thermal paste, motherboard power limits, fan curves and workload. Ryzen 5000 processors can briefly spike in temperature during boost activity. A short spike is not the same as sustained thermal throttling.
1. Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE: best overall
The Peerless Assassin 120 SE is the strongest all-round recommendation when your case has enough room. Its large dual-tower design and two-fan configuration offer substantially more cooling capacity than the Wraith Stealth and more headroom than most inexpensive single-tower coolers.
Tom’s Hardware’s independent testing found the cooler exceptionally capable and included results at 95 W, a useful comparison point for a processor such as the 5600X. That does not mean the review measured this exact CPU in every possible configuration, nor does it guarantee a particular temperature in your case.
PC Gamer lists AM4 and AM5 support and a 155 mm height in its review. The height is manageable for many ATX and mATX cases, but you must check the case specification. The front fan can also overhang tall memory modules, depending on the motherboard and RAM height.
Buy it if
- You want the best cooling headroom per dollar.
- You use PBO or sustained all-core workloads.
- Your case supports a roughly 155 mm tower and your RAM layout is compatible.
- You may reuse the cooler with another AM4 processor.
Skip it if
- Your case has limited CPU-cooler height.
- You use unusually tall memory and do not want to adjust fan height.
- You want the simplest possible installation or have no need for extra capacity.
2. DeepCool AK400: best compact mainstream choice
The AK400 is the practical choice for most people replacing the Wraith Stealth. Its single-tower, 120 mm format is easier to fit around memory and nearby motherboard components than a large dual tower, while still providing considerably more cooling capacity than the stock cooler.

AMD’s cooler-solutions database lists the AK400 for the Ryzen 5 5600X class at up to 120 W. Treat that as a compatibility and recommendation signal, not as a standardized temperature result: cooler wattage ratings are not directly comparable between manufacturers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe AK400 makes the most sense in a standard ATX or mATX gaming PC running stock settings. It is more compact and less awkward than the Peerless Assassin, but it cannot offer the same sustained-load headroom. DeepCool’s availability and warranty handling can also vary by country and seller, so confirm the listing and regional support before purchasing.
3. Noctua NH-U12S redux: best premium single tower
The NH-U12S redux is the conservative premium choice. It is not usually the cheapest route to lower temperatures, but it combines AM4 support, a straightforward mounting system, good memory compatibility and a long warranty with a quiet-focused design.
Noctua specifies a 158 mm height, one 120 × 25 mm PWM fan, a maximum fan speed of 1,700 RPM, a stated maximum noise level of 25.1 dB(A), a six-year warranty and a 129 NSPR rating. These are manufacturer specifications, not a promise of a particular noise level in your completed PC. See Noctua’s specification page and its NSPR explanation.
The 158 mm height still rules it out for some compact cases. It can also be outperformed by cheaper dual-tower designs, so its value depends on how much you prioritize support, mounting quality, predictable compatibility and long-term fan availability.
4. be quiet! Pure Rock 2: best quiet-budget alternative
The Pure Rock 2 is a sensible single-tower option for a stock or lightly tuned 5600X, especially in a quiet office or gaming build. Its appeal is a simple design and quiet-oriented positioning rather than class-leading thermal performance.
Rank #3
- 【Better Heat Dissipation】The CPU cooler comes with a dual-tower heatsink and two 120mm PWM fans to ensure excellent heat dissipation from the CPU.
- 【Aesthetic Appeal】A blackout cooler can blend seamlessly into the design of many computer cases, especially those with black or dark-colored interiors.
- 【157mm Height】The dual-tower CPU air cooler can fit most tower cases due to a 157mm height in total.
- 【RAM Compatibility】The CPU air cooler gives 40mm clearance for standard RAM and a maximum of 63mm height with the cut-out fin.
- 【6 Heat Pipes】Six Ф6mm copper heat pipes can efficiently absorb heat from the CPU and transfer it to the heatsink.
Choose it when a conservative single tower fits your case and the current price is competitive. If a Peerless Assassin-class cooler costs about the same, the larger cooler generally offers more headroom. Do not confuse the standard Pure Rock 2 with RGB or newer variants: included fans, dimensions and pricing can differ.
5. Thermalright Assassin X 120 Refined SE: best low-cost upgrade
The Assassin X 120 Refined SE is a good budget recommendation when it is substantially cheaper than the AK400 or other comparable 120 mm towers. For a stock 65 W 5600X, a basic tower cooler is normally enough to replace the Wraith Stealth and reduce the need for high fan speeds.
This is a value pick, not a maximum-performance pick. Thermalright’s product naming is crowded, so verify that the listing is specifically for the Assassin X 120 Refined SE and check the exact dimensions, fan revision, AM4 mounting hardware and seller warranty. Do not treat the Assassin X, Assassin King, Assassin Spirit and Peerless Assassin families as interchangeable.
6. Arctic Freezer 36: strong modern single-tower alternative
The Freezer 36 is worth considering where it is readily available and priced below or near the AK400 and Pure Rock 2. It offers readers a newer single-tower alternative, but it should not automatically outrank established competitors without comparable test data.
Check the exact version before ordering. Confirm AM4 hardware, cooler height with the supplied fan, memory clearance and whether the product is the standard, CO, A-RGB or another variant. Also verify U.S. stock and warranty handling at the time of purchase through Arctic’s product information and the retailer listing.
7. Low-profile cooler: best for restrictive cases
For a small-form-factor PC, the best cooler is the one that fits the case. Select a specific low-profile AM4 model only after checking the case’s maximum CPU-cooler height, memory clearance, nearby PCIe hardware and ventilation. A cooler that is excellent in a normal ATX system may be physically impossible to install in a compact chassis.

A specially designed, funnel shaped air outlet is more than just the icing on the cake: it maximizes the airflow over the fins.
- Despite being a double-tower air cooler, Pure Rock Pro 3’s compact offset design increase RAM and VRM cooler compatibility significantly. The height of the front fan can be adjusted, if needed.
- Installation is easier than ever with the Pure Rock Pro 3. Its mounting kit is self-explanatory and easy to use, making attaching the cooler a breeze. Users of an AM5 CPU by AMD can benefit from an offset mounting to center the base plate above the hot spots of their CPU.
- Powerful. Strong. Unshakable. The Pure Rock Pro 3 makes a statement not only in performance, but also in design. We made sure the cooler leaves a lasting impression in your PC. Despite its striking appearance, its lines are discreet, perfectly combining power and elegance.
Low-profile coolers are generally a compromise: they provide less heatsink area and less acoustic headroom than tower coolers. That is acceptable when case dimensions make a tower impossible, but there is little reason to choose one for an ordinary ATX or mATX build.

For the stock 5600X, air cooling is normally the better answer. An air cooler is cheaper, simpler, easier to maintain and has no pump or liquid loop to fail. If its fan eventually fails, replacement is straightforward.
An AIO can make sense for aesthetics, radiator placement or a planned upgrade to a substantially hotter processor. It may also suit a case with poor tower clearance but good radiator support. It should not be chosen simply because a lower peak temperature sounds better: if the CPU is already operating within its limits, the lower number may not produce a meaningful gaming benefit.
AMD’s cooling-solutions page lists both air and liquid options for the 5600X class. That list does not mean the processor requires liquid cooling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Wraith Stealth worth replacing?
Keep the Wraith Stealth if you run the 5600X at stock settings, temperatures are acceptable, fan noise does not bother you and the cooler is correctly mounted. Replace it if the fan is frequently loud, sustained workloads push temperatures close to the processor’s limit, you are using PBO, or you want a quieter system.

Compatibility checklist
- Check the case’s maximum CPU-cooler height.
- Confirm AM4 support and that the mounting kit is included.
- Measure RAM height, especially for dual-tower coolers.
- Check whether the front fan can be raised above the memory without exceeding case clearance.
- Confirm clearance around the first PCIe slot and rear motherboard hardware.
- Check whether the cooler uses the motherboard’s existing AM4 backplate or requires a different mounting arrangement.
- Prefer a 4-pin PWM fan connector if you want automatic fan-speed control.
- Verify the exact standard, RGB, SE, chromax, CO or revised model.
Installation and troubleshooting
- Warm the processor briefly before removing an old cooler; this softens the thermal compound and reduces the chance of pulling the CPU from its socket.
- Clean old paste with suitable isopropyl alcohol and allow the surfaces to dry.
- Keep the AM4 backplate if the replacement mounting system needs it.
- Apply the manufacturer-recommended amount of thermal paste.
- Tighten screws evenly in alternating turns so mounting pressure remains balanced.
- Connect the fan to the motherboard’s
CPU_FANheader. - Confirm that the fan spins, then check temperatures under a repeatable load.
- Make sure the cooler does not touch the memory, graphics card or case side panel.
If temperatures are unexpectedly high, check that the protective film was removed from the cold plate, the fan is oriented correctly and the fan is not connected to a fixed low-speed header. Recheck BIOS fan controls and mounting pressure, then reapply paste if necessary. Temporarily removing the side panel can reveal poor case airflow; a large temperature drop points to an airflow problem rather than an inherently inadequate cooler. Also check whether PBO or a motherboard “enhanced” performance setting is increasing power.
How to interpret 5600X temperatures
The official maximum operating temperature is 95°C, but there is no single universal “safe gaming temperature” that applies to every PC. A brief boost spike can be normal. Heavy rendering and stress tests can produce higher sustained temperatures than gaming. Sustained readings near the limit deserve investigation, particularly if clocks fall or performance changes.
When comparing results, record the workload, ambient temperature, case, fan curve, software, package power and whether PBO or a manual overclock was enabled. Do not treat a claim such as “under 70°C” as meaningful without those conditions.

How a genuinely tested comparison should be run
“Tested” should describe documented publisher testing, not merely a headline. A fair comparison should use the same case, motherboard, BIOS, memory, thermal paste, fan layout and operating-system setup for every cooler. It should record the 5600X stepping, chipset-driver version, ambient temperature, mounting orientation, fan settings and PBO or manual-overclocking state.
Useful workloads include stabilized idle, a repeatable gaming workload, Cinebench R23 single-core, Cinebench R23 multi-core and a clearly labeled sustained stress test such as OCCT or Prime95. Results should include average and maximum temperature, package power, effective clock, fan speed, noise, ambient temperature and test duration. Noise-normalized results are particularly useful because a maximum-speed cooler should not be compared directly with a quiet 30 dBA result.
Never rank coolers using temperatures gathered from different platforms. If a result is an outlier, remount the cooler and repeat the benchmark. Independent results from Tom’s Hardware and broader cooler comparisons from Tom’s Hardware and PC Gamer are useful context, but they are not interchangeable with a new, controlled test of every cooler on a 5600X.
