Yes. A new PS5 retail package includes an HDMI cable that Sony recommends for the console’s high-bandwidth features, including 4K at 120Hz. In most setups, you do not need to buy another cable.
The important qualification is that “HDMI 2.1 cable” is informal shopping language. The official cable designation for this capability is Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable. The cable is only one part of the setup: your TV or monitor, its HDMI input, settings, firmware, and any receiver or switch in the signal path must also support the feature you want.

What cable comes with the PS5?
The standard disc-based PS5 and Digital Edition retail packages normally include an HDMI cable. Sony’s support guidance specifically tells PS5 owners troubleshooting high-resolution output to check whether they are using “the cable included with the PS5 console” or another Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120Hz.
That applies to normal new retail packages, although package contents can vary by market, edition, bundle, and revision. Used, refurbished, open-box, or incomplete consoles may be missing the original cable, so check the listing or box contents if you bought second-hand.

Sony’s official guidance is the strongest practical answer: keep the supplied cable and use it as your first-choice connection between the PS5 and display. Sony’s PS5 4K resolution guide recommends the included cable for 4K/120Hz troubleshooting, while Sony’s PS5 FAQ recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that supports HDMI 2.1-related features.
Is the included cable suitable for 4K at 120Hz?
Yes, it is designed to be the correct cable for the PS5’s 4K/120Hz output. Sony identifies the PS5 as supporting the HDMI 2.1 specification and 4K/120Hz video output, and specifically recommends either the cable included with the console or an appropriately rated Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
That does not mean the cable can add HDMI 2.1 features to an older TV. The console, cable, display input, display panel, and any equipment between them form one signal chain. If the television only supports 4K/60Hz, the included cable cannot make it display 4K/120Hz.

“HDMI 2.1 cable” is not the precise cable name
HDMI 2.1 is primarily a specification covering device and connection capabilities. The official cable designation associated with the highest-bandwidth HDMI 2.1-era features is Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable.
According to HDMI.org, certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cables are rated for up to 48Gbps and formats including 4K/120Hz and 8K/60Hz. A product title that says “HDMI 2.1,” “8K,” “gaming,” or “48Gbps” is not, by itself, proof of certification. When buying a replacement, look for the official Ultra High Speed HDMI certification label and, where available, verify it through HDMI’s certification system.
The cable supplied with a PS5 may not have prominent “HDMI 2.1” wording printed on its jacket. That absence does not prove it is unsuitable. Sony’s recommendation to use the included cable is more useful evidence of practical compatibility than the marketing text—or lack of marketing text—on the cable itself. However, the available guidance does not establish that every included PS5 cable in every package revision is separately HDMI Forum-certified, so that claim should not be assumed.

- HDR and other supported PS5 display features
- A short connection where the cable reaches without strain
There is no automatic picture-quality improvement from replacing a functioning, suitably rated cable with a more expensive cable of the same capability. A pricier cable is useful only when it solves a real problem such as length, damage, installation requirements, or an unreliable signal.
When buying a replacement makes sense
- The original cable is missing: Buy a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable.
- The cable is damaged: Replace it if the connectors, jacket, or strain relief are damaged, or if the signal cuts out.
- You need a longer run: Choose the shortest length that reaches comfortably and avoids tension.
- You are routing cable inside a wall: Select a product explicitly rated for in-wall installation where local requirements call for it.
- You are isolating a fault: A known-good certified cable is a sensible test after checking the TV input and settings.
Examples of replacement types include the Monoprice 8K Certified Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable as a value-oriented option, the Monoprice in-wall-rated model for fixed installations, and Belkin’s 8K Ultra High Speed HDMI braided cable for buyers who value braided construction and a stated warranty. Prices and availability can change. Capability and certification matter more than the brand or price.

Why 4K/120Hz may still fail
A cable can be capable while the overall setup is not. Check these requirements:
- The TV or monitor must support 4K/120Hz.
- The PS5 must be connected to the display’s specific HDMI 2.1-capable input; not every HDMI port on a TV necessarily has the same bandwidth.
- The display may require an “Enhanced,” “Deep Color,” or equivalent HDMI mode.
- The TV or monitor should have current firmware.
- An AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, splitter, or capture device can limit the signal.
- The game must support a 120Hz mode if you expect that particular title to run at 120 frames per second.
Sony recommends connecting the PS5 directly to the TV when troubleshooting, rather than routing it through intermediary equipment. It also advises checking the correct HDMI 2.1 input, display firmware, and console video-output settings.
PS5 settings to check
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Screen and Video.
- Select Video Output.
- Set Resolution to Auto or 2160p.
- Set Video Transfer Rate to Auto.
Also check the TV’s gaming mode, enhanced HDMI setting, HDR option, and VRR option where applicable. Menu names vary by manufacturer.
Best Value
- Real 8K HDMI certified cable: The HDMI cables pass HDMI 2.1 Certified. The HDMI Cable delivers 10K 8K@60Hz and 4K@240Hz higher resolution, 4 times higher than 4K@60Hz. The advanced technology makes a remarkable improvement in image clarity and sharpness
- 48Gbps ultra high speed: The HDMI 2.1 Cable with 48Gbps bandwidth delivers uncompressed 8K(7680 x 4320) video and high-speed transmission without signal loss. Make it faster 2.6X than HDMI 2.0(18Gbps). The 4K@240Hz HDMI cord also supports variable refresh rates and QFT to decrease “display latency”. Auto low latency mode and quick media switching for movies and video use the HDMI VRR mechanism to eliminate the blackout period when an HDMI Source device switches its video mode
- Dynamic HDR & eARC: This HDMI Cable features Dynamic HDR to let you capture more details with 12-bit color accuracy and get breathtakingly realistic pictures. The function of eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) directly delivers full-resolution audio, like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X from TV to soundbar/AV receiver. Also Support HDCP 2.3/2.2, Ethernet, 3D
- Enhanced durability: Built with a robust aluminum alloy case, nickel-plated connectors, and a durable nylon braided jacket, HDMI cables can withstand more frequent bending tests and decrease rupture without reducing cable flexibility, ensuring enhanced signal transmission performance and a longer lifespan
- Wide compatibility: Compatible with Apple TV/PS5/PS4 Pro/Roku Stick, Xbox Series X/S/Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, Wii U, Mac mini M4/M4 Pro, Laptop, PC, Blu-ray player, AV Receiver, TV stick, TV Box, DVD player, LG 8K UHD TV, Samsung G8/G9 QLED TV, Soundbar, Projector, Monitor and more
Practical troubleshooting sequence
- Turn off the PS5 and display, then reconnect both ends of the HDMI cable firmly.
- Test with the original PS5 cable if it is available and undamaged.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor, bypassing receivers, soundbars, switches, splitters, and capture devices.
- Move the cable to the display’s HDMI 2.1-capable input.
- Enable the TV’s enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI mode.
- Update the TV or monitor firmware.
- Use the PS5 path Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, then set Resolution and Video Transfer Rate to Auto.
- Test another compatible HDMI input or display if possible.
- If the direct connection works, reconnect intermediary equipment one device at a time to identify the limitation.
If you get a black screen or no signal
Possible causes include an unsuitable or damaged cable, the wrong HDMI input, disabled enhanced mode, outdated display firmware, incompatible intermediary equipment, or unsupported display hardware. Do not assume the cable is at fault until you have tested the direct connection and the correct TV port.
If 4K works but 120Hz does not
4K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz have different bandwidth requirements. A setup can successfully display 4K at 60Hz but fail at 4K/120Hz. Check the display’s specifications and input, its settings and firmware, the game’s 120Hz support, and every device in the signal path.
If VRR or HDR is unavailable
Confirm that the display supports the feature and that it is enabled in the TV’s gaming or HDMI settings. Receivers, switches, soundbars, and other equipment may not pass every feature through. The included cable may be capable even when another part of the chain is not.
What if you already own an older HDMI cable?
An older cable may work perfectly for 1080p or 4K/60Hz, but that does not guarantee 4K/120Hz performance. Test it under the exact output settings you want. If it fails, use the included PS5 cable or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI replacement.
A Premium High Speed HDMI cable is tested for up to 18Gbps and is intended for applications such as 4K/60Hz, HDR, and expanded color spaces, according to HDMI.org. That can be appropriate for many 4K/60Hz systems, but Ultra High Speed is the safer replacement category when 4K/120Hz, VRR, or other high-bandwidth features are the goal.
Bottom line
Keep and use the HDMI cable that came with your PS5. Sony recommends it for the console’s 4K/120Hz output, so most owners do not need to purchase a replacement. Buy another only if the original is missing, damaged, too short, unsuitable for an in-wall installation, or if a documented certified replacement is needed after troubleshooting the rest of the setup.
