To improve Fortnite’s frame rate on a Windows PC, start with low graphics settings or Performance Mode, then check drivers, background apps, GPU selection, power, and heat. Change one thing at a time and compare in the same kind of gameplay: Epic says results depend on your hardware and may be slight or nonexistent, so no setting guarantees a particular FPS increase.
1. Check whether your PC meets Fortnite’s requirements
Compare your system with Epic’s current PC requirements. Its recommended configuration lists Windows 10/11 64-bit, a GTX 960 or AMD R9 280 equivalent with 2 GB VRAM, a Core i5-7300U or Ryzen 3 3300U equivalent, 16 GB RAM, and an NVMe SSD. Epic also lists a higher Epic-quality preset: RTX 3070 or Radeon RX 6700 XT, 8 GB VRAM, Core i7-8700 or Ryzen 7 3700X equivalent, 16 GB RAM, and an NVMe SSD.
The minimum list includes Intel HD 4000 or Radeon Vega 8 graphics, a Core i3-3225, and 8 GB RAM. Minimum requirements do not mean the system can run the game at its highest settings, and none of these specification tiers promises a particular frame rate.
2. Lower graphics settings first
In Fortnite’s video settings, set Quality Presets to Low and 3D Resolution to 100% as a starting point, as Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guidance recommends. If gameplay becomes more stable, raise settings gradually, one at a time, until you find a workable balance between visual quality and performance.

- Ultra-Quiet Fans: Three ultra-quiet fans create a noise-free environment for you
- Extra Usb Ports: Extra USB port and power switch design allows for connecting more USB devices. Warm Tips: The packaged cable is USB to USB connection. Type C connection devices need to prepare an Type C to USB adapter
Lower settings reduce visual detail; they are not a guaranteed fix if the cause is elsewhere, such as background load or heat.
3. Try Performance Mode
Epic describes Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity as a mode that reduces visual quality to improve frame rate and reduce memory use and CPU/GPU load. To try it, open Fortnite’s Settings, go to the Video or Display options, choose Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity for rendering mode, apply the change, and restart the game if prompted. The precise layout or wording can change with updates; Epic’s low-FPS instructions provide the current support path.

Epic’s Fortnite Team reported two historical examples in 2021: one laptop went from 24 FPS to 61 FPS and another from 18 FPS to 45 FPS. Those were results from particular laptops in the same standard Squads match at 720p, comparing low scalability settings with Performance Mode. They are not current benchmarks or typical results for other PCs.
4. Update your graphics driver
Outdated graphics drivers are among the causes Epic identifies for visual problems. Install the latest driver offered by your GPU maker—NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel—then restart Windows and check Fortnite again. Treat this as a troubleshooting step, not a promised FPS boost. See Epic’s low-FPS guidance and graphics troubleshooting page.

5. Close background apps and check which GPU Fortnite uses
Close applications you do not need while playing, particularly those using substantial CPU, GPU, or memory. Epic notes that background programs can reduce Fortnite performance. On a laptop with integrated and dedicated graphics, also make sure Fortnite is assigned to the high-performance GPU rather than the integrated one. Epic provides NVIDIA and AMD instructions in its low-FPS support article.
6. Check Windows power mode and heat
A Windows power-saving setting can slow games and graphics. Switching to a higher-performance power mode may help, but it uses more power and shortens battery life; on a laptop, test while plugged in if practical. Epic covers power settings in its performance troubleshooting guidance.

If frame rate drops after extended play, check whether vents are blocked, remove dust carefully, and use the PC in a well-ventilated space. These steps address possible heat-related trouble; they will not resolve every low-FPS cause.

Depending on hardware and available settings, Fortnite PC may offer TSR, NVIDIA DLSS, Intel XeSS, FXAA, SMAA, or TAA. Super-resolution options render fewer pixels and reconstruct the image, which can reduce rendering load at the cost of image quality. They are not interchangeable: availability depends on your device and the in-game options.

Epic’s DLSS setup instructions describe a DirectX 12 flow and require current Windows, Fortnite, and GeForce drivers. For other hardware, use the corresponding option only if it appears in your graphics settings. Epic’s cited support page says AMD FSR is not currently an in-game option; availability can change, so check the live settings rather than assuming it is present.
How to tell what is limiting your FPS
- Settings: If lowering visual quality or switching to Performance Mode helps, keep the settings that provide an acceptable balance.
- Background load: If closing other applications changes performance, reduce the workload competing with Fortnite.
- Laptop GPU selection: If the system has both integrated and dedicated graphics, verify the game is using the high-performance GPU.
- Power or heat: If performance changes with power mode or declines after longer sessions, check those conditions before assuming the PC needs an upgrade.
- Hardware ceiling: If these changes do not help and the PC falls below Epic’s listed specifications, the system may be the constraint; the requirements themselves cannot predict an exact FPS.
FPS, input latency, and monitor refresh rate are different
FPS is how many frames the PC renders each second. A monitor’s refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is how often it can refresh its image. A 144Hz display can show up to 144 refreshes per second, but it does not make the PC render more frames. Epic recommends gaming displays at 120Hz, 144Hz, or higher in its competitive-settings guide; that kind of display upgrade is useful only if your system can produce more frames than your current screen can show.
Input latency is the delay between an action and its response on screen. It is related to, but distinct from, rendered FPS and display refresh. Do not assume every latency-related setting increases frame rate.
