A small, lightly modded 7 Days to Die dedicated server should have at least 6 GB of RAM free for the server process and about 15 GB of SSD space. For modded play or four or more simultaneous players, plan for 10–16 GB of RAM and 25 GB or more of SSD capacity. Those server figures are community planning estimates, not guarantees from the game developer. The official specifications describe the Windows client, while the Help Center warns that a dedicated server uses more memory and puts heavier load on the CPU.
What the published requirements actually mean
There are three different numbers people often call “the server requirements”: the hardware needed to run the game client, the resources reserved for a dedicated server, and the total resources needed when one computer runs both. They are not interchangeable.

The current 7 Days to Die Help Center hardware article, updated April 21, 2026, lists Windows client requirements of 8 GB RAM minimum, 12 GB RAM recommended, a 2.8 GHz quad-core processor minimum, a 3.2 GHz quad-core processor or faster recommended, and 20 GB of available storage. The article explicitly cautions that “Running a dedicated server requires more ram and heavier use on your CPU.” Those client figures therefore should not be treated as a dedicated-server sizing guarantee.
Steam’s system-requirements listing also gives the Windows client 8 GB minimum and 12 GB recommended RAM. It lists 15 GB of storage instead of the Help Center’s 20 GB and warns that running a dedicated server and client on the same computer will double RAM requirements. Use the newer Help Center page for the current general client-storage figure; neither client-storage number establishes how much disk space your world, logs, backups, or mods will consume.

RAM and storage targets for a dedicated server
The most practical server-sizing figures come from a 7D2D Wiki setup guide updated June 16, 2026. Its table labels 6 GB of free RAM and a 15 GB SSD as a minimum configuration. For modded play or four-plus players, it describes 10–16 GB of RAM and at least 25 GB of SSD space as more comfortable. Treat these as planning estimates: world settings, mod size, map activity, save frequency, and concurrent players can move the actual requirement up or down.
| Scenario | Free RAM for the server | SSD space | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small, lightly modded or vanilla server | 6 GB | 15 GB | Community minimum estimate from the 7D2D Wiki guide; leave additional headroom for the operating system and backups. |
| Modded play or four or more players | 10–16 GB | 25 GB or more | Community comfort range, not an official guarantee; heavier mods and larger worlds may need more. |
| Windows game client | 8 GB minimum; 12 GB recommended | 20 GB in the current Help Center | Official client figures, not dedicated-server specifications. |
“Free RAM” means memory available after Windows or Linux and background services have taken their share. A machine with 8 GB installed does not provide 8 GB to the server. Check the operating system’s actual available memory while the machine is idle, then reserve the target amount for the server rather than sizing from the installed-memory label alone.
SSD capacity is a capacity and responsiveness question, not just a boot requirement. The server needs room for the game files, generated world data, player data, logs, updates, mod files, and at least one recoverable backup. An SSD is the recommendation in the community guide. NVMe is an optional faster SSD format, not an established requirement, and it will not compensate for insufficient RAM or weak CPU performance.

Concurrent players
Every additional player can increase active entity processing, world activity, network traffic, and save pressure. A server that is stable for two friends may become CPU-bound when several players explore separate regions at once. Use the community comfort range as a starting point for four or more players, then watch memory use and tick or update responsiveness during the busiest period rather than judging by the number of connected players alone.

Mods and overhaul packs
Mods vary widely. A small quality-of-life mod may have little effect, while an overhaul can add assets, scripts, entities, recipes, and larger save data. Ask whether the mod changes the world-generation process, adds persistent entities, or requires every client to load a matching pack. Those characteristics are more useful for planning than the word “modded” by itself.
World and settings
World size, view distance, entity limits, blood-moon settings, loot or respawn rates, and other server options affect resource use. Keep extra disk capacity for world growth and backups, and leave RAM headroom if you intend to raise entity or activity limits later. The published figures do not provide a universal player-to-RAM formula or a controlled performance benchmark.
CPU requirements: prioritize fast cores
The official client guidance lists a 2.8 GHz quad-core processor as the Windows minimum and a 3.2 GHz quad-core or faster processor as recommended. A dedicated server is a different workload: the Help Center warns of heavier CPU use, and the 7D2D Wiki guide describes the server as CPU-bound and favors fast cores. No official server CPU model or controlled benchmark is established in the cited material.

If a managed host advertises only a large vCPU number, ask whether those are dedicated resources or oversubscribed virtual cores. A smaller allocation on a less-contended host can perform better than a larger nominal allocation shared with many tenants. Providers that do not explain CPU allocation, throttling, or burst behavior make it harder to diagnose lag.
Running the server and game on one PC
Hosting on the same computer you use to play is possible, but it combines two demanding workloads. Steam’s warning is direct: running a dedicated server and client on the same computer will double RAM requirements. The client also competes for CPU time, storage I/O, and operating-system cache.
A separate spare computer avoids that contention and lets the host remain online when the main gaming PC is shut down. It also makes troubleshooting easier because a frame-rate problem on the gaming machine is not automatically a server simulation problem. If you must share one PC, close browsers and launchers, disable unnecessary background tasks, keep the world on an SSD, and watch available memory while both the client and server are active.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choose a separate machine when the host plays regularly, wants 24-hour availability, or plans to use a large overhaul mod.
- Choose the same PC only when the expected group is small and you can tolerate the server stopping whenever the gaming machine is offline.
- Do not size shared hardware from the client’s 8 GB minimum; the server and client need memory at the same time.
Operating-system support and version caveats
The Help Center’s April 2026 guidance identifies SteamOS 3.0, which is Arch-based, as the recognized Linux baseline and says Ubuntu-based distributions are not the recommended baseline going forward. Older Steam listing text still names Ubuntu versions. Because those statements differ, use the current Help Center guidance for the game version you are deploying and verify compatibility after major updates rather than assuming that an older distribution listing is still the preferred target.

On Windows, keep the operating system, game files, server files, and drivers current enough for the deployed game build. On Linux, use a supported distribution baseline, document the exact game and mod versions, and test a backup restore before inviting players. The server’s ability to start is not the same as a guarantee that every mod or cross-platform feature works on every distribution.
Cross-platform servers and the player-count limit
The official “Dedicated Servers for Cross-Platform” guidance lists a maximum ServerMaxPlayerCount value of 8 for the cross-platform configuration it describes. That is a configuration constraint for cross-platform servers, not a universal performance limit for every dedicated server. A non-cross-platform installation may have different practical limits, while a machine that technically accepts eight players can still lag if its CPU, memory, mods, or world activity are unsuitable.
Before renting or configuring a server for friends on different platforms, confirm that the host supports the required cross-play mode, the current game version, the intended player-count setting, and any mods you plan to use. Cross-platform compatibility does not remove the need for matching game and mod versions on participating clients.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
You can run a dedicated server on your gaming PC, a separate home machine, or a rented managed service. The hardware decision is only part of the trade-off; administration, availability, recovery, and network location matter just as much.

| Option | Advantages | Costs and responsibilities | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same PC as the game | No second machine or hosting bill; simplest initial setup. | Server and client compete for RAM and CPU; it goes offline when the PC is off; home upload and router configuration matter. | Small private groups that play at the same time. |
| Separate home machine | Less contention; can stay online independently; full control of files and backups. | You provide hardware, power, updates, security, network access, and recovery. | Owners with a spare computer and willingness to administer it. |
| Managed server | Datacenter connectivity, a control panel, and often automated backups and updates. | Recurring cost; resource allocations vary; you depend on the provider’s support, location, policies, and game-version support. | Groups that want reliable availability without maintaining a machine. |
When comparing managed plans, check the following items in writing:
- Whether the advertised RAM is guaranteed and how much the operating system or control panel consumes.
- CPU allocation, contention policy, throttling, and whether storage is SSD-based.
- Supported game versions, update timing, player-slot limits, cross-platform mode, and mod installation method.
- Automated backup frequency, retention, downloadable backups, and the procedure for restoring a world.
- Datacenter location and expected latency for the actual players, not just the company’s headquarters.
- Support response times, migration or upgrade options, cancellation terms, and what happens to your files when service ends.
No provider ranking or universal price comparison follows from the published requirements. A low advertised price is not useful if the plan oversubscribes CPU, restricts mods, or offers no practical recovery path.
A practical sizing and setup checklist
- Define the workload. Write down the maximum simultaneous players, whether the server is vanilla or modded, the planned world settings, and whether cross-platform play is required.
- Measure host headroom. On a self-hosted machine, check memory available after the operating system is idle. Reserve the server’s target amount before opening the game client or other services.
- Choose fast CPU capacity. Favor strong per-core performance and avoid sharing the host with heavy workloads during play.
- Use SSD storage with room to grow. Allocate space for the game, world, logs, mod files, updates, and more than one backup; do not treat the minimum table value as a complete backup plan.
- Install matching versions. Keep the dedicated server, clients, and mods on compatible versions, and record changes so you can roll back a failed update.
- Test before inviting everyone. Join with a small group, travel to separate areas, trigger a busy event, and observe memory, CPU, save times, and disconnects.
- Make recovery routine. Schedule backups, copy at least one backup away from the live disk, and perform a test restore so a damaged world is not your first recovery exercise.
- Re-size from evidence. If memory remains close to full, add RAM or reduce workload. If one or more CPU cores stay saturated while memory is available, choose faster or less-contended CPU capacity instead of buying storage.
Common failure symptoms and what they indicate
Players see rubber-banding or delayed interactions
Check CPU saturation and whether players are exploring separate regions at the same time. A fast storage upgrade will not fix a consistently saturated simulation thread. Reduce heavy settings or move to stronger, less-contended CPU capacity if the workload exceeds the host.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe server crashes during saves or mod loading
Check available RAM rather than installed RAM, then review the mod set and world size. A host that meets the community minimum can still fail when the operating system, server, and client share memory. Keep a known-good backup before changing several mods at once.
The world starts but cross-play clients cannot join
Verify that the server is configured for the intended cross-platform mode, that the game build is current, and that the configured ServerMaxPlayerCount does not exceed the documented cross-platform maximum of 8. Confirm that every client uses compatible content.
Storage fills unexpectedly
Inspect world growth, logs, mod files, update leftovers, and retained backups. Expand the SSD allocation or rotate old backups deliberately; do not delete the only copy of a world to recover a few gigabytes.
Bottom line for choosing hardware or a host
Start a small server with the community’s 6 GB free-RAM and 15 GB SSD estimate only when the group and mod load are modest and the machine has additional headroom for its operating system. For four or more players or substantial mods, plan around the 10–16 GB and 25 GB-plus comfort range, then validate it under real peak activity. Prioritize fast CPU cores, SSD storage, reliable backups, and a host location near the players. If the same PC also runs the game, account for Steam’s warning that RAM requirements double; a separate machine or managed service is often the cleaner choice.
