Their compounds can appear in different biomes from world to world, so there is no dependable universal coordinate list. Approach a compound to add it to your map, then use the map marker and the Opening Trade Routes quest chain to decide which trader is worth visiting.

Quest tiers advance across traders in version 1.0 rather than being locked to one NPC. The route moves from pine forest through burnt forest, desert, snow and finally wasteland. Traders buy and sell goods for Dukes, offer jobs, and refresh their storefronts every three in-game days. The rest of this guide shows how to locate each NPC, unlock route progression, choose jobs safely and plan purchases around the next restock.

The five traders at a glance
The current vanilla roster contains five trader NPCs. Their possible biome ranges overlap, and the actual compound you receive depends on world generation, settings and, potentially, mods. Treat the table as a spawn guide, not a promise that every world will place a trader in every listed biome.
| Trader | Possible spawn biomes | What that means for travel |
|---|---|---|
| Rekt | Pine forest or desert | Often reachable from comparatively safer early areas, but a desert placement can make heat, water and long road trips relevant. |
| Jen | Pine forest or burnt forest | May be convenient early or may require a more dangerous burnt-forest expedition. |
| Bob | Burnt forest or desert | Usually involves one of the middle-risk environments in the route sequence. |
| Hugh | Snow or wasteland | His possible locations are late-route destinations with substantially greater environmental and combat risk. |
| Joel | Snow or wasteland | Like Hugh, he can be positioned in the high-risk end of the biome progression. |
Biome placement does not prove that a trader specializes in one permanent item category. If you need weapons, armor, medicine, vehicle parts or another specific class, inspect the current storefront rather than relying on a name-based chart. Item tables and storefront details are version-sensitive.

How to find trader compounds
Use discovery instead of memorizing coordinates
Trader coordinates are world-generation dependent. A coordinate copied from another seed, platform or server can point to empty terrain or a different structure. The reliable method is to follow the in-game route and mark every compound you discover.
- Complete the opening objective that introduces your character to the White River settlement and starts the trader route.
- Follow the directional objective to the assigned trader compound. The route target is generated for your world, so use the quest marker and compass rather than a universal coordinate.
- Walk close enough to the compound to trigger discovery. Approaching a trader compound automatically adds its location to your map.
- Open the map and rename or otherwise organize the marker if your platform supports personal map notes. Record nearby roads, water sources, cities and safe storage so later trips are shorter.
- When another route objective points to a trader in a different biome, compare the destination with your existing markers before accepting a long job.
Mods, custom world-generation settings and multiplayer server configuration can alter both spawn behavior and travel conditions. If a marker or quest objective does not match the expected biome, trust the active world and verify the game version before treating it as a bug.

The Opening Trade Routes chain is the progression framework for reaching increasingly dangerous regions. Its biome order is:
- Pine forest
- Burnt forest
- Desert
- Snow
- Wasteland
The initial White River Citizen quest starts this progression. In a trader’s dialogue, choose “Got any special jobs?” to access the special-job selection described by the official wiki. These jobs are the practical way to keep advancing while earning rewards and learning the roads around each compound.
What “unlocking the next trader” really means
You do not permanently unlock a trader by buying a particular item or by discovering a hidden password. You advance the route by completing the appropriate quest progression and then following the next destination. In version 1.0, quest-tier progression is no longer trader-specific: progress earned with one trader carries over to the others. That lets you choose the NPC whose job is closest, safest or most profitable without resetting your tier when you change locations.

Why the order matters
The sequence is also a risk ladder. Pine forest trips generally form the early leg; burnt forest and desert follow; snow and wasteland are later legs with harsher travel and survival demands. A route quest can therefore be technically available while still being a poor choice for your current equipment. Check the destination biome before accepting a job, especially if the objective sends you beyond the roads you already know.
How trader quest tiers work
Quest tiers determine the quality and difficulty range of jobs offered as your shared progression rises. Because the progression is shared in version 1.0, switching from Rekt to Jen, Bob, Hugh or Joel does not discard the tier you have earned. This supports a flexible loop: take a nearby job from the trader you can reach safely, then use the reward and experience to prepare for the next biome.
A practical job-selection checklist
- Read the destination: identify the biome, distance and whether the route crosses terrain you cannot easily retreat from.
- Compare the reward with the risk: a higher-tier job is not automatically better if fuel, ammunition, healing items or repair materials will consume the payout.
- Group travel: select jobs in the same general direction when possible, then turn in several objectives during one supply run.
- Protect your return: leave carrying capacity for loot and keep enough food, water, fuel and medical supplies to survive an unexpected detour.
- Use the shared progression: if one trader’s offered job is remote, check another discovered compound before committing to the trip.
Quest limits and version differences
Do not assume one universal number of jobs per day or one fixed tier threshold. Quest limits can change with game version, difficulty and server settings. The 1.0-era rules establish shared tier progression, but the exact limit in your save should be confirmed in the current interface and server configuration.
Buying and selling with Dukes
Dukes are the in-game currency for trader transactions. Traders buy goods from you and sell goods to you, so a successful visit is both a supply stop and a cash-conversion decision.
Buy for the next bottleneck
Before opening the shop, identify the constraint that is most likely to stop your next objective: ammunition, healing, food, water, tools, protective equipment, vehicle materials or fuel. Buy only what supports the next route leg when your storage and budget are limited. A cheap item that solves an immediate shortage can be more valuable than a rare item that cannot be used before the next restock.

Sell with a reserve
Convert surplus loot into Dukes after setting aside repair materials, ammunition, medical supplies and components needed for your current base project. Avoid selling an item merely because it has a high displayed value if replacing it would require a dangerous trip to another biome. Keep a written or map-based note of which categories you are short on so a later storefront visit is faster.
Do not rely on a permanent inventory list
The durable mechanic is the trader interface, not a permanent, universal item table. What appears in a storefront can depend on version and configuration. Check the actual stock at the compound, compare it with your immediate need and make your purchase decision from the current prices and quantities shown in-game.
Restocking: the three-day cycle
Traders restock every three in-game days. The interface includes a restock indicator; use it instead of memorizing the day on which a particular item should return. A cycle is measured in game time, not real-world time, and server settings can affect how quickly a player experiences that cycle.
Plan a restock run
- At the compound, inspect the indicator and note when the next refresh is due.
- Sell surplus loot now if you need Dukes for the next purchase window.
- Use the intervening days for quests, mining, farming, crafting or base work rather than making repeated empty trips.
- Return after the indicator confirms the cycle has completed, then inspect the storefront again.
- If stock does not change as expected, check the displayed timer, your server’s time settings and whether a mod changes trader behavior.
Because the five traders can be far apart, combine restock visits with quest turn-ins or a planned supply route. A trip solely for one uncertain item is usually less efficient than a trip that also completes a nearby job and sells a full inventory.

| Decision axis | Question to ask | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Biome and travel risk | Can your current gear, supplies and vehicle handle the destination? | Choose the safest compound that solves the immediate problem. |
| Route position | Where does this trader sit in the pine-to-wasteland progression? | Match the trip to the stage of the Opening Trade Routes chain. |
| Job tier and reward | Will this job advance shared progression without exhausting your supplies? | Prefer objectives that fit your current capability and return path. |
| Immediate inventory need | Does the current storefront contain what you actually need? | Inspect stock in person; do not infer it from the NPC’s name. |
| Restock timing | Is the three-day refresh due before your next expedition? | Time purchases and quest turn-ins around the indicator. |
| Configuration | Are you playing vanilla, modded or on a server with altered settings? | Verify rules before applying a guide written for another setup. |
A low-waste trader routine
Early route
Use the first discovered compound as a navigation anchor. Complete the White River Citizen introduction, inspect the available special jobs and choose a destination that keeps you in or near the pine forest while you build supplies. Record the compound on your map immediately; the marker remains useful even when the next quest sends you elsewhere.
Middle route
When the chain reaches burnt forest and desert, carry enough water, food, ammunition and repair capacity for the return trip. Combine a quest with a sale of accumulated loot, then spend Dukes only on items that remove a current bottleneck. If two traders are available, the nearer job can advance the same shared tier as a farther job.
Late route
Snow and wasteland destinations should be treated as planned expeditions. Confirm the route, weather and vehicle readiness, reserve emergency healing and leave storage space for rewards. A high-tier objective is useful only if you can complete it and return without sacrificing the supplies required for the next mission.

Troubleshooting common trader problems
“I cannot find the trader from a guide”
Check whether the guide used a different seed, map-generation setting, platform or game version. Follow the active route objective and search the biome range assigned to that NPC rather than relying on copied coordinates.
“My quest tier did not reset when I changed traders”
That is expected for version 1.0’s shared progression. Tier advancement carries between traders, allowing you to select jobs by distance and risk.

“The trader has nothing I need”
Read the restock indicator, sell only expendable surplus and return after the refresh cycle. Storefront contents are version-sensitive, so use the current in-game stock instead of an old item list.
“The quest limit differs from a video or server guide”
Quest limits can vary by version and settings. Check the rules active in your save or server before treating a different daily count as an error.
Version, platform and mod caveats
This explanation targets the 1.0-era vanilla game and a trader-progression resource described as compatible through version 2.0. Exact spawn behavior, quest limits and storefront details are volatile. Console, PC, dedicated-server and modded saves can present different labels or rules. Confirm the platform and version before applying a numerical claim, and treat any physical console edition’s availability, region and retailer listing as separate purchasing questions.
The core habits remain stable: discover compounds in your own world, follow the biome-ordered route, use shared quest progression to choose the safest practical job, pay in Dukes, and let the restock indicator—not a memorized list—determine when to shop again.
