Tap your inventory binding to open the full inventory; hold that same binding to open the backpack quick-select view. The backpack is acquired shortly after the helicopter crash and lets you reach a small set of carried items without reopening the complete inventory. In the inventory screen, assign frequently used, eligible equipment to the backpack, then hold the inventory control during play to choose it. Keyboard players can also assign number-key hotkeys, while controller players should use the button labels shown in their current Controls screen because prompts and mappings vary.
How the two inventory actions differ
Sons of the Forest has a full inventory for broad storage, crafting, and gear management, plus a quick-select system for the items you reach for under pressure. Both actions use the same inventory binding, but the duration matters:

| Tap the inventory binding | Opens the complete inventory interface. | Crafting, examining supplies, changing gear, and configuring the backpack. |
| Hold the inventory binding | Displays the backpack quick-select view. | Choosing a weapon, light, healing item, or other frequently used carried item while exploring. |
The exact key or button is not universal: controls can be changed, and the active prompt depends on your platform and remapping. Treat the tap-versus-hold behavior as the important concept, then verify the label beside the inventory action in Options → Controls.
What the backpack does
You receive the backpack near the beginning of the game, after the helicopter crash. It does not create a second storage container or remove items from your normal inventory. Instead, it exposes selected carried equipment through the Quick Select system. An assigned item remains in the full inventory; the backpack is simply a faster route to that item.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The system is deliberately smaller than the complete inventory. Its value is speed, not maximum capacity. During a fight or a dark passage, you can hold the inventory control, choose an item, and return to the game without navigating every object you carry. Items that are rare, highly situational, or needed mainly for crafting can stay in the full inventory.
Not every object should be assumed to be assignable. Hover an item and follow the on-screen prompt. If the interface does not offer a backpack or hotkey action for that object, leave it in the regular inventory and use it through the normal interface.

Set up quick select step by step
- Open the full inventory. Tap your configured inventory key or button. Do not hold it; holding opens the quick-select view instead.
- Find the backpack or quick-select control. The inventory interface shows the control used to configure the backpack. Its visual location and prompt can change with input method or remapping.
- Choose an item you use often. Hover a weapon, tool, consumable, or other carried item that the interface marks as eligible, then use the displayed assign command.
- Build a small working set. Add a frequently used weapon, a light source, a healing item, and a stamina or food consumable. These are recommendations for reducing menu trips, not a mandatory game loadout.
- Close the inventory. Return to the world so you can test the selection without entering a dangerous area.
- Open the backpack. Hold the inventory binding. The quick-select view should appear with the items you assigned.
- Select the item. Use the interaction shown on screen to highlight and equip or use the desired item. Keyboard and mouse players may instead press a number hotkey after assigning one.
- Test before traveling. Confirm that each chosen item appears and that the associated key or button feels comfortable. If something is missing, reopen the full inventory and check the assignment prompt.
Assignments are retained as part of your quick-select setup, while the item itself continues to occupy its normal place in your inventory. Reorganize after major gear changes because a replacement weapon, newly found light, or different medical supply may better fit a slot.

Keyboard and mouse hotkeys
The controls reference includes item slots 1 through 4 as number-key quick-slot actions, but the exact defaults are configurable. Endnight’s Steam hotfix also documents a keyboard/mouse hotkey system: in the inventory, hover an item and press a numerical key from 0 through 9 to assign that hotkey. This lets you use more explicit number assignments than relying only on the visual backpack wheel or list.
Assign a number key
- Tap the inventory binding to open the full inventory.
- Move the cursor over the eligible item.
- Press the number you want to use, from 0 through 9, following the on-screen behavior in your current version.
- Close the inventory and press that number during play to test the assignment.
- If the number does nothing, open Options → Controls and inspect the Item Slot or hotkey binding. Remap it if another action is using the same key.
Use number keys for actions you can perform without looking away for long: changing to a primary weapon, pulling out a light, or selecting an emergency heal. Keep the mapping consistent. For example, you might reserve the leftmost or easiest-to-reach numbers for combat and illumination, while placing food or stamina items on keys you can press safely during exploration.
Because controls are editable, a guide that calls a particular key the “default” can be wrong for your installation. The Controls screen is the authority for your current bindings, and a changed keyboard layout can alter which physical key is most convenient even when the in-game label remains numeric.

Using quick select on a controller
Controller prompts and bindings vary by platform, firmware, and personal remapping. The reliable rule is unchanged: tap the inventory button for the full inventory and hold that same button for the backpack quick-select view. Once the view opens, use the directional or selection controls shown on screen to highlight an assigned item, then use the confirm or equip prompt displayed for your controller.
Controller setup checklist
- Open Options → Controls and identify the button labeled for inventory.
- Check whether the screen distinguishes a tap from a hold. If a hold duration is shown, use that timing rather than rapidly pressing twice.
- Assign items from the full inventory, where the game displays the valid backpack action.
- Hold the inventory button in a safe location and confirm that the backpack view appears.
- Practice selecting an item before entering a cave or combat encounter.
- If the wrong menu opens, review remapping for conflicts and restore or choose a clearer button.
Some players prefer the controller’s quick-select interaction because it avoids reaching for number keys; others prefer direct keyboard hotkeys for faster, repeatable changes. Neither input method changes what the backpack is doing: both expose selected items that remain in the main inventory.
A practical beginner loadout
There is no developer-mandated four-item arrangement. A useful starting point is based on how often an item is needed and how costly it is to pause for the full inventory.

| Quick-select role | Suggested item type | Why it earns a slot | When to change it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary response | A weapon you can use confidently | It shortens the transition from exploration to defense. | Replace it when a different weapon becomes your regular choice or the situation calls for a specialized tool. |
| Visibility | A light source | Dark areas often require immediate access without a long inventory pause. | Change it when your preferred light source changes or you are carrying a more suitable option. |
| Recovery | A healing item | It gives you a direct response to damage when opening the full inventory would be risky. | Refresh the assignment if your available medical item changes. |
| Endurance | A stamina or food consumable | It supports movement and exploration when you need it repeatedly. | Swap it for another consumable when the trip’s demands change. |
This arrangement is advice, not a rule. If you are building, you may prefer a tool; if you are preparing for a long cave trip, a second utility item may be more valuable than food. The test is simple: if you reach for an item often enough that opening the full inventory interrupts your activity, it is a candidate for quick select.
Quick select versus the full inventory
| Question | Quick select | Full inventory |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Fast access to a small group of assigned items. | Broad storage, crafting, inspection, and equipment management. |
| How you open it | Hold the inventory binding. | Tap the inventory binding. |
| What belongs there | Frequently used, eligible weapons, tools, lights, and consumables. | Rare, situational, crafting, and backup items. |
| How assignments work | Shows selected items that still remain in normal inventory. | Where you choose items and configure backpack or number-key assignments. |
| Main trade-off | Speed with limited selection. | Completeness with more navigation. |
Do not treat quick select as a replacement for inventory organization. It is an access layer. You still need the full inventory to configure assignments, manage broader supplies, and handle items that are not exposed through the backpack.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare before a cave trip or long expedition
- Choose the trip’s likely interruptions. Expect darkness, combat, injury, or extended movement, and select quick items that address those interruptions.
- Open the full inventory in a safe location. Reassign the backpack before leaving shelter or another place where you can pause without pressure.
- Verify each item is actually carried. An assignment is useful only while the corresponding item is available in your normal inventory.
- Test the access method. Hold the inventory binding and select each item once; keyboard users should also test their number keys.
- Keep backups in the full inventory. Do not fill every quick slot with rare items that you may never use during the trip.
- Reorganize after major discoveries. A newly acquired light, weapon, or consumable can change which items deserve immediate access.
Make this check a routine rather than waiting until a fight begins. The backpack is most useful when its contents match the next activity, not when it contains every item you own.

Common problems and fixes
Tap opens the inventory, but holding does nothing
- Confirm that you are holding the same inventory binding rather than a neighboring button.
- Check Options → Controls for a changed or unassigned inventory action.
- Hold long enough for the quick-select interface to appear; a rapid tap may only reopen the full inventory.
- Test in a safe area after remapping, then save the layout you can reproduce reliably.
The item is not visible in the backpack
- Open the full inventory and hover the item to see whether an assignment prompt appears.
- Assign it again if you recently changed gear or reorganized the inventory.
- Check that the item is still carried; quick select does not create a duplicate or separate stock.
- Do not assume every object is eligible. If the game offers no backpack action, keep it in the full inventory.
A number key does not select the assigned item
- Verify that the key was assigned while the cursor was hovering the intended item.
- Review the Item Slot or hotkey entries in Options → Controls.
- Look for a conflicting action or a remapped keyboard layout.
- Reassign the item to another number from 0 through 9 and test again.
The controller opens the wrong screen
- Read the active controller prompt instead of relying on a guide written for another platform.
- Check whether the inventory button was remapped.
- Use a deliberate tap for the full inventory and a sustained hold for quick select.
- If the behavior remains inconsistent, restore the inventory binding to a known layout, test it, and then make other remaps one at a time.
The backpack feels cluttered
Remove low-frequency items and keep only the equipment that solves immediate, recurring problems. Put rare or situational gear in the full inventory. A smaller, familiar quick-select set is faster than scanning a crowded one.

Default bindings are useful for learning the system, but remapping can make the difference between a reliable action and a missed one. Choose a button or key you can hold comfortably, avoid assigning inventory access to a control you frequently activate by accident, and keep similar actions grouped where possible. After changing controls, test both tap and hold behavior because a remap can affect the two paths at once.
Keyboard/mouse players can use the documented 0–9 assignment range to avoid awkward combinations. Controller players should prioritize a button that is easy to hold while moving and that does not force an uncomfortable hand position. The game’s current Controls screen should decide the final label; platform-specific prompts are not interchangeable.
A simple inventory routine to remember
- Tap the inventory binding for the complete inventory.
- Assign only eligible, frequently used items to the backpack.
- Optionally hotkey hovered items to number keys 0–9 on keyboard and mouse.
- Hold the inventory binding during play to open quick select.
- Refresh assignments after changing your gear or preparing for a different trip.
- Check Controls whenever a key, button, or prompt does not behave as expected.
Once this rhythm is familiar, the full inventory becomes your planning space and the backpack becomes your response tool: configure before you leave, hold to access what matters immediately, and return to the full inventory for everything else.
